The liver can be involved directly, by infiltration, and indirectly--by remote effects--in the histiocytoses of childhood. Langerhans cell disease, the most well recognized of these, infiltrates the liver directly but has a remarkable selectivity for the bile ducts. Early involvement is by Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) infiltration leading to a sclerosing cholangitis and, eventually, biliary cirrhosis. Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase is a sensitive indicator of liver infiltration in a child with LCH. The indirect effects on the liver of LCH elsewhere in the body are mediated through an acc

A 9-month-old French bulldog was referred for signs of chronic large bowel diarrhea. The dog had an increased frequency of defecation, tenesmus and hematochezia. Flexible colonoscopy showed hyperemia, irregularities and ulcerations with multifocal hemorrhages in the mucosa from the descending colon to the proximal rectum. Multiple colonic biopsies were characterized by infiltrations of PAS positive histiocytes in the lamina propria. A diagnosis of histiocytic ulcerative colitis (HUC) was made, and the animal showed only minimal improvement, although it was treated with nutritional and medical …

The diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis requires a high index of clinical suspicion, awareness of its atypical features and availability of various tissue samples for morphological and special studies. The case reported here highlights the diagnostic difficulties encountered in a patient diagnosed as malignant histiocytosis who presented with cutaneous lesions in multiple foci, which included the face, groin and forearm. Only after repeated biopsies and special stains, a diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis was arrived at. Chemotherapy with CHOP regimen (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincris

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis (CHP) is a recently recognized entity that frequently poses a perplexing diagnostic problem. Although the classical case presents with a relapsing fever, subcutaneous nodules, pancytopenia and liver dysfunction, most patients have in addition a multitude of other manifestations which confuse the clinical picture. Notwithstanding the variable clinical course, the disease frequently terminates in fatal hemorrhage. Diagnosis is based on histological features. A lobular panniculitis with an infiltrate of cytologically benign cytophagocytic histiocytes in skin no…

Two cases of clinical diagnosis of tumour of the trachea and tumour of the stomach are described in a 42- and 52-year-old males. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural methods were used to prove the histiocytic nature of the tumour cells which were morphologically similar to poorly differentiated carcinoma and large cell lymphosarcoma.

The case is reported of a woman aged 26 with painful swelling of the left cervical lymph nodes. These symptoms were preceded by paresthesias and pain at the left side of her body, especially the left leg and the left arm. A lymph node biopsy revealed the diagnosis of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease). Physical examination and laboratory data showed no other abnormalities. The patient recovered soon without any therapy. The morphological findings are described and a review of the literature is given.

We report a typical case of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease). To our knowledge this is the first reported case in Denmark. Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis is a benign self-limiting disorder, which mainly involves the cervical lymph nodes. The disease commonly affects young women of Asian origin, but it is seen more and more often in other populations. Clinically and histologically it can be misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma. The etiology is unknown.

Histiocytic tumors of the orbit comprise an unusual group of lesions characterized by the infiltration of the orbital tissues by xanthomatous cells. Recently, there have been a number of new observations regarding the various histiocytic tumors that can affect the orbit. The condition previously referred to as histiocytosis X is believed to represent a proliferation of Langerhans cells and the term Langerhans cell histiocytosis is often used instead of histiocytosis X. Juvenile xanthogranuloma has been demonstrated to affect the orbit without involving the skin or the iris. The Erdheim-Chester

Two patients with benign cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis are presented and compared with the one benign and ten fatal cases previously reported. Benign-appearing histiocytes which engulf blood cells, nuclear debris, and platelets are the most characteristic feature of the disease. This cytophagia tends to be massive in the subcutaneous tissue and involves extracutaneous organs only in the fatal cases. The course is chronic in the benign form. Patients with the fatal form tend to have fever, hepatosplenomegaly, serosal effusions, ecchymoses, peripheral adenopathy, and mucosal ulcers. Anemia…

BACKGROUND Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive hematopoietic malignancy characterized by histiocytic cell proliferation. Its rarity and nonspecific presentation create significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in HIV-positive patients. CASE REPORT An HIV-positive man in his late 20s from a rural area and low-income background, referred from a district hospital, presented with asymptomatic nodular and crateriform lesions on the face, thorax, and back, characterized by central keratosis, crust, and erythematous-violaceous infiltrated edges. We report a 31-year-old male patient repeatedly hospitalized for mimicking infectious symptoms. Following standardized anti-infective and anti-inflammatory treatment, clinical evolution was discordant, characterized by treatment non-response and symptom exacerbation. Ultimately, the multidisciplinary team and repeated histopathological examinations diagnosed histiocytic sarcoma (HS). Unfortunately, the treatment opportunity was lost due to HS's high aggressiveness and rapid progression.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a systemic inflammatory syndrome characterized by heightened activation and proliferation of nonmalignant macrophages and excessive cytokine release. Whereas acute kidney injury is common in this syndrome, direct glomerular involvement by activated histiocytes is very rare. We present the case of a man in his 20s who presented with fevers, malaise, flank pain, anemia, thrombocytopenia, severe acute kidney injury, and proteinuria. A kidney biopsy revealed histiocytic glomerulopathy and subacute thrombotic microangiopathy, and he was diagnosed with HLH…

In this review, we discuss a logical approach to diagnosis of histiocytic and dendritic cell lesions of the mediastinum. We break down the differential diagnosis between true neoplasms of histiocytic and dendritic cells [Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), and follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS)] versus selected neoplasms of other lineages which frequently attract non-neoplastic histiocytes or resemble them morphologically (carcinoma, melanoma, sarcoma, germinoma, mesothelioma, and lymphoma). As neoplasms in the latter category are more common, they should be…

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a term used to describe malignant hyperplasia of cells exhibiting morphological and immunophenotypical characteristics similar to those of mature cells, with expression of one or more tissue cell markers, excluding acute monocytic leukemia and primitive monocytic sarcoma. We herein describe a case of histiocytic sarcoma of the neck supported by histopathological and immunohistological evidence. A 53-year-old female patient of Chinese descent presented with a rapidly enlarging right neck mass. Imaging studies revealed multiple right cervical lymphadenectases with rig

A 7-year-old female domestic rabbit suffered from labored respiration, poor appetite, mild anemia and thrombocytopenia. Radioscopic examination revealed masses in multiple locations including the intrapleural cavity and spleen. Forty-three days after the first visit to a private veterinary clinic, the rabbit died of severe respiratory distress. Microscopically, all of the masses were composed of round to polygonal neoplastic cells with distinct cell borders that were arranged in a sheet pattern. Multinucleated giant neoplastic cells were often observed. Some neoplastic cells had phagocytozed o
