Hookworm infection is a major cause of disease burden for animals and humans. Over the past years, the use of animal models in hookworm infections has been driven by the search of new anthelminthic therapies and, especially, vaccine development. These studies also contributed to the advance of knowledge on immunity to hookworms, offering new insights to understand the nature of this parasitic infection. In this article, we will summarize the essential features of the immune response in the two major animal models of hookworm infections (dog and hamster) and then consider its implication for th…

This report describes the detection of hookworm excretory/secretory (ES) antigens in soluble hamster fecal extracts by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A rabbit polyclonal IgG antibody against Ancylostoma ceylanicum ES was used to capture hookworm coproantigens that were then detected using pooled, high-titer, infected hamster serum. The ELISA was capable of detecting ES proteins over a range of 10 ng/mL to 10 mug/mL when the antigens were diluted in buffer or uninfected fecal extract, and ES could be detected in infected hamster feces at dilutions up to 1:256. Examination of the

To characterize the immune response following primary human hookworm infection, an adult volunteer was infected with 50 L3 larvae of Necator americanus, reinfected 27 months later and followed for a further 6 months. Clinical signs, blood picture, ex-vivo peripheral blood cytokine production (IFN-gamma, IL-5, IL-13, IL-10 to mitogen and hookworm antigen), acute phase proteins (APP) (C-reactive protein, CRP and alpha1-antitrypsin, alpha1-AT) and antibody levels were determined. Dermatitis, oedema, mild nausea and abdominal discomfort followed the primary infection. Eosinophil counts peaked earl

OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible routes for human infection by the dog hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum). DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANT: Relatively small numbers of infective larvae were administered orally and percutaneously to an informed healthy volunteer (J K L) under medical supervision, at intervals between May 1998 and May 1999.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Symptoms; weekly blood eosinophil counts; faecal microscopy.
RESULTS: A marked blood eosinophilia followed a single oral exposure to 100 infective larvae, while faecal examination remained negative. Eosinophil counts then declined gradu

This report describes a significant increase in the prevalence of hookworm infection in an area of Haiti where intestinal parasites are common, but hookworm has not been common. Changing environmental conditions, specifically deforestation and subsequent silting of a local river, have caused periodic flooding with deposition of a layer of sandy loam topsoil and increased soil moisture. We speculate that these conditions, conducive to transmission of the infection, have allowed hookworm to reemerge as an important human pathogen.

Three different control schemes including selective chemotherapy, a combination of selective chemotherapy and management of fecal disposal and mass treatment with mebendazole-medicated salt were implemented for the control of hookworm infection in Luwo Town and Taiping Village, Wuming County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region during 1971-1990. Through ten years of selective chemotherapy, the results showed that the hookworm infection rate dropped from 42.6% to 3.9% and the infection intensity from 425.6 eggs per gram faeces to 1.6 eggs per gram faeces. After seven years of selective chemotherap

The relationship between iron status and the intensity of infection with hookworm was investigated in a rural population on Karkar Island, Mandang Province, Papua New Guinea. There was a significant negative correlation between plasma ferritin level and hookworm burden, which was strongest in males. In contrast, there was no correlation between plasma ferritin and hookworm egg count, and no consistent correlation between haemoglobin level or haematocrit and either measure of hookworm intensity. The results suggest that the role of hookworm in the aetiology of anaemia may be difficult to assess

During 1983, a multinational military intervention took place on Grenada. After deployment, troops from several U.S. Army units noted signs and symptoms consistent with soil-transmitted helminthic infection. Of 684 soldiers screened five to seven weeks post-deployment, over 20% reported abdominal pain and/or diarrhea during or after the action. Eosinophilia of at least 10% was observed in 119 (22.5%) of 529 soldiers evaluated further; eosinophilia of 5-9% was documented in another 126 (23.8%) of the 529 soldiers. Stool examinations confirmed hookworm infection in 35 soldiers. One case of stron
