[American Quarter Horses and HYPP].

Hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis is a genetic disease that affects the American Quarter Horse population and is caused by a mutation. As a result of this mutation in a gene which codes for the sodium channel in muscle cells, severe muscle weakness can appear. Reliable DNA-tests can establish whether a horse is homozygous negative, heterozygous, or homozygous positive for this mutation. Therapy and prevention are discussed.

Erythema multiforme in two horses.

Erythema multiforme is reported for the first time in 2 South African horses. Both horses displayed a sudden, fulminant outbreak of raised, non-alopecic and non-pruritic plaques over the dorsolateral aspects of the neck and trunk. In both cases the distribution of the lesions was bilaterally symmetrical. Histopathological findings included hydropic degeneration of basal epidermal cells, eosinophilic necrosis of individual or groups of keratinocytes, intra-epidermal and sub-epidermal cleft formation and mixed, dermal, perivascular infiltrates. An initiating cause could not be identified in eith…

[Alder buckthorn poisoning in horses].

Seven cases of poisoning in horses are reported. This was caused by ingestion of branches of the alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus (mill.) syn. Rhamnus frangula L.), which had been thrown on the pasture. The biological characteristics and the toxic action of the plant are discussed more fully.

[Doping control in race horses].

Doping in performance horses is defined as the "illegal application of any substance, except normal diet, that might modify the natural and present capacities of the horse at the time of the race." The prohibition of doping is mainly based on the protection of animals. Doping can be performed with various aims: "doping to win" can be regarded as the classical method by mobilization of overphysiological capacities. Such positive doping may be classified as an acute form using psychomotoric stimulants, as a chronic form using anabolic hormones, and as a paradoxical form using small doses of neur…

Retropharyngeal infections in five horses.

Five horses with retropharyngeal (RP) infections had clinical signs of dysphagia and/or dyspnea. Diagnosis was confirmed, using pharyngeal endoscopy and lateral radiography of the pharynx. One horse responded to surgical drainage of a RP abscess and was sound at light work. One horse responded to medical management after the site of infection was surgically explored. Two horses recovered after medical management; the RP abscess of 1 of these 2 horses ruptured spontaneously into the pharynx and the other horse became racing sound. The fifth horse remained dysphagic and had left laryngeal hemipl…

Purchase examinations for performance horses.

Performance horses should be thoroughly examined before sale to detect any defects that could render them unsuitable for the purchaser's intended use. With the horse in its stall, the eyes, nasolacrimal puncta, external ear canals and mouth are examined, the rectal temperature measured and the heart, lungs, trachea and sinuses auscultated. Moving the horse out of the stall, the head, parotid glands, mandibular lymph nodes, larynx, neck muscles, jugular veins and cervical vertebrae are inspected. The scapula, point of the shoulder, withers, tuber sacrale and point of the hip are palpated, after…

Suspected tremetol poisoning in horses.

Of 10 horses in a heavily overgrazed pasture, 4 died within 1 week. Clinical signs included muscle tremors, ataxia, reluctance to walk, heavy sweating, and myoglobinuria. Serum creatine kinase, aspartate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase activities were high. Histopathologic findings were nonspecific. On the basis of clinical signs, clinicopathologic findings, nonspecific histopathologic findings, the condition of the pasture, the identification of numerous white snakeroot plants from which trematone was extracted, and evidence that these plants had been heavily browsed, it was believed t…

Outbreak of botulism in horses.

An outbreak of nervous disease in Standardbred horses occurred near Bendigo, in south-eastern Australia, in October 1980. Over a two week period 11 horses in four training stables were affected with gait abnormalities, depression and recumbency. Eight of the 11 died. The results of an investigation implicated Clostridium botulinum toxin as the cause. The toxin was food-borne as a contaminant of oaten chaff.

Nasal aspergillosis in three horses.

Three horses were referred for investigation of a unilateral foul smelling scanty nasal discharge, complicated in one case by intermittent epistaxis. Thick purulent material or a mycotic plaque was identified by an endoscopic examination of the middle meatus but in two horses this had to be repeated under general anaesthesia before the abnormalities were detected. Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured from all three cases and septate hyphae were identified on smears from lesions. Histological examination of the lesion in one case revealed a fungal mycelium. Topical treatment with natamycin soluti…

Treatment of hygromata in horses.

A surgical technique of open drainage, using penrose drains and pressure bandages, was used for the treatment of hygromata in four horses. In 3 cases with hygroma of the carpus, one with a secondary infection, there was complete resolution of the condition whereas in the one case with hygroma of the elbow resolution was more protracted because of difficulties in bandaging. The cosmetic and functional results after operation were most satisfactory.

Acquired torticollis in eleven horses.

Case records of 11 horses with acquired torticollis during a 15-year period were reviewed. The cause was established in seven of eight cases and included cervical intervertebral disk protrusion, skull fracture, neurogenic atrophy, and dystrophic myodegeneration. The latter condition was considered to be the most likely cause in the three horses that recovered.

General anesthesia in pleasure horses.

Anesthetic management of the pleasure horse consists of the appropriate selection and administration of pre-anesthetic medications including anticholinergics, tranquilizers and narcotics followed by appropriate techniques of anesthetic induction. The anesthetic induction must vary somewhat for the pleasure horse practice since many of the procedures are completed on farms and ranches. As a result the inducing of anesthesia will frequently be with the same agent which will be used to maintain anesthesia. Noticeably will be the reduction and duration of anesthesia and surgical time. The inductio

Dystrophic myodegeneration in adult horses.

Five horses with histories of colic developed signs of myocardial failure and skeletal muscle disease. Necropsy revealed pale areas in the cervical, pectoral, pelvic, and cardiac musculature; histologically, the lesions were indicative of dystrophic myodegeneration. Serum vitamin E concentrations were normal in 2 of the horses but serum selenium concentrations were normal in 2 of the horses, but serum selenium concentrations were low when compared with values obtained from clinically normal horses.

The Impact of a Horse Kick: A Systematic Review of Horse-Related Maxillofacial Trauma.

Objectives: To systematically review the evidence on horse-related maxillofacial trauma, with emphasis on horse-kick injuries, anatomical patterns, associated injuries, management, outcomes, and prevention. Methods: This systematic review followed the PRISMA 2020 statement. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for original clinical studies reporting facial, craniofacial, orbital, dental, or maxillofacial injuries related to horse-associated activities. Data were extracted on study characteristics, demographics, mechanism, mounted/unmounted status, anat
