Muscoid fly populations in tsunami-devastated villages of southern India.

Several coastal villages of southern India were affected by the 26 December 2004 tsunami, and 10,749 people were killed. Investigation carried out in the affected villages during fourth, fifth, and sixth weeks posttsunami showed that the fly density was in the range of 12-91.8 flies per sweep net. In total, 3,259 flies belonging to eight species, namely, Musca domestica L., Musca vicina Macquart, Musca sorbens Wiedemann, Calliphora erythrocephala Robineau-Desvody, Sarcophaga ruficornis F., Chrysomyia sp. Robineau-Desvody, Chlorops sp., and Fannia sp. Robineau-Desvody, were recorded. M. domesti

The pattern of parasitic infection in human gut at the Specialist Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria.

In a survey of 6213 persons conducted between January 1973 to December 1974, at the Specialist Hospital, Benin City, the most common helminths were Necator americanus (16.8%), Ascaris lumbricoides (19l5%) and Trichuris trichiur (5-9%). Dicrocoelium hospes (0-06%) was also recorded and this may become an important liver parasite of man in Nigeria. Its snail vectors are believed to be species of Limicolaria and Achatina which are widely dispersed in Nigeria. Entamoeba coli and E. histolytica showed peaks during the "fly seasons", indicating that the housefly, as well as water, may be an importan

Orally active acaricidal peptide toxins from spider venom.

Numerous species of ticks and mites (collectively known as acarines) are serious pests of animals, humans, and crops. There are few commercially available acaricides and major classes of these chemicals continue to be lost from the marketplace due to resistance development or deregistration by regulatory agencies. There is consequently a pressing need to isolate new and safe acaricidal compounds. In this study, we show that two families of peptide neurotoxins isolated from the venom of the Australian funnel-web spider Hadronyche versuta are lethal to the lone star tick Amblyomma americanum. Binding of [3H]batrachotoxinin A-20-alpha-benzoate to a high affinity site associated with house fly head membranes.

1. [3H]Batrachotoxinin A-20-alpha-benzoate (BTX-B), a radioligand that labels the alkaloid activator recognition site of the voltage-sensitive sodium channel, was bound specifically to high affinity, saturable sites in a subcellular preparation from house fly (Musca domestica L.) heads that was shown previously to contain binding sites for other sodium channel-directed ligands. 2. Specific binding of [3H]BTX-B was observed in the presence of 140 mM sodium or potassium and was inhibited by choline ion. 3. Saturating concentrations of scorpion (Leiurus quinquestriatus) venom stimulated the speci

Properties and affinity purification of the mixed-type putative acetylcholine receptor from wild and a mutant strain of hose flies.

Binding of decamethonium to a soluble preparation from house fly head (either wild or a mutant strain) showed a single kind of binding with values for wild strain of Kd = 0.095 micrometers and Bmax = 0.22 nmol/mg protein. The mutant had a four-fold greater affinity and a seven-fold lesser amount. The binding was blocked by both nicotinic and muscarinic drugs. The decamethonium binding migrated in sucrose gradients as a single peak, with sedimentation coefficient s20,w = 12.5 S and therefore a molecular weight of 342 000. Purification by affinity chromatography was achieved with only partial lo

Efficacy of Hot Capsicum annuum Extracts Against the Biological Activity of Culex pipiens and Musca domestica Larvae with their Phytochemical Profiles.

PURPOSE: The extensive use of chemical pesticides poses risks to the environment and human health due to the toxicity and poor biodegradability. Alternative natural practices, including the use of natural molecules, are needed to achieve more sustainable production methods to meet consumer and societal expectations. Plants contain a wide range of potential phytochemicals that target a specific target, are rapidly biodegradable, are environmentally friendly, and have a variety of therapeutic effects, making them a treasure trove of biological materials. METHODS: Toxicity of hot Capsicum annuum

Assessing the toxicity of green Agaricus bisporus-based Cadmium Sulfide nanoparticles on Musca domestica as a biological model.

The common housefly, Musca domestica, known for transmitting over 100 infections, was studied using green-synthesized Cadmium Sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) from Agaricus bisporus. These CdS NPs were tested on third-instar larvae under laboratory conditions using dipping and feeding methods with concentrations (75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 µg/mL). The toxicity, measured by LC50, was found to be 138 µg/mL for dipping treatment and 123 µg/mL for feeding treatment. Analysis with an energy-dispersive X-ray microanalyzer confirmed Cd accumulation in the larval midgut, indicating penetration of

Transmission of viable Haemophilus ducreyi by Musca domestica.

Haemophilus ducreyi was historically known as the causative agent of chancroid, a sexually-transmitted disease causing painful genital ulcers endemic in many low/middle-income nations. In recent years the species has been implicated as the causative agent of nongenital cutaneous ulcers affecting children of the South Pacific Islands and West African countries. Much is still unknown about the mechanism of H. ducreyi transmission in these areas, and recent studies have identified local insect species, namely flies, as potential transmission vectors. H. ducreyi DNA has been detected on the surfac

Involvement of Follicular Patency in the Ovarian Developmental Block in Virus-infected, MdSGHV, House Flies, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

The Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) is known to have marked effects on the female Musca domestica L. (or common house fly) reproductive system, particularly regarding the size and functionality of the ovaries. Examination of the terminal ovarian follicles can help determine if and how MdSGHV mechanistically causes the block in ovarian development. In this study, terminal ovarian follicle lengths were measured and monitored for patency using Trypan blue dye staining. We examined the effect of MdSGHV infection on female house fly ovarian follicles and attempted to rescu

Experimental and field investigation of non-biting flies as potential mechanical vectors of Echinococcus granulosus eggs.

Synanthropic fly species can be potential mechanical vectors of many infectious agents. The potential of the flies to carry Echinococcus granulosus eggs is not fully documented. The purpose of the present study was to determine the possible role of non-biting flies to carry taeniid eggs. A total of 210 flies were collected from seven selected sites in areas of Kerman city, southeastern Iran from November 2016 to May 2017. Adult flies were live-caught using sweeping nets. Flies were placed individually in small glass bottles and transported to the laboratory. All the flies were killed by deep f

Ingested Salmonella enterica, Cronobacter sakazakii, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes: transmission dynamics from adult house flies to their eggs and first filial (F1) generation adults.

BACKGROUND: The mechanical transmission of pathogenic bacteria by synanthropic filth flies is widely recognized. While many studies report the fate and the temporospatial distribution of ingested foodborne bacteria by filth flies, there is little evidence about the transmission dynamics of ingested foodborne bacteria by adult house flies (Musca domestica) to their progeny. In this study, we fed parental house fly adults with food contaminated with low, medium, and high concentrations of Salmonella enterica, Cronobacter sakazakii, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes and evaluat
