BACKGROUND: Genetic carrier screening is a useful tool for couples looking to understand the genetic risk profile of their offspring. However, this method is limited in identifying rare genetic variants.
CASE: A couple undergoing single euploid embryo transfer (SEET) following planned embryo banking was followed in this study. The patient was a 39-year-old nulliparous female with negative expanded carrier screening (ECS) which included 400 autosomal recessive and X-linked conditions. Her partner was a 39-year-old male with no pertinent past medical history. Clinical pregnancy was achieved fol

To determine the teratogenic potential of Aino virus (AINOV) in cattle, pregnant cows and fetal cattle were infected with a fresh isolate of … less than the standard gestation term; they had congenital abnormalities including arthrogryposis, hydranencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia. Antibodies specific to AINOV were detected in their precolostral serum. These results demonstrate that AINOV is a potential etiological agent of congenital malformation of cattle.

An outbreak of congenital hydranencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia occurred between November 1985 and May 1986 in Miyazaki, South Kyushu, Japan. Seventy-three calves had nervous signs of varying severity such as inability to stand, locomotor difficulties, defective vision and difficulty in sucking. At necropsy, 62 calves had macroscopic lesions in the central nervous system: hydranencephaly accompanied by cerebellar hypoplasia in 47; hydranencephaly alone in eight; and dilatation of the lateral ventricle in seven; none had arthrogryposis. Microscopically, all 62 cases involved various degrees…

Post-mortem magnetic resonance appears to be a method supplementary to classic pathological-anatomical autopsy in determining foetal abnormalities. Frequently, it plays a key role, primarily where autopsy options are in some way limited (developed autolysis, dilatation of the ventricular system). This case report demonstrates that post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging can precisely determine the type of congenital malformation (hydranencephaly), by contrast to ultrasound, with which alobar holoprosencephaly has been described, often presenting a differential diagnosis problem. Pathological-an…

We present 2 examples of previously apparently undescribed congenital anomalies that recurred in a subsequent pregnancy. In one case this was a multiple-congenital-anomalies syndrome of hydranencephaly with multinucleated neurons, hypoplastic kidneys, and syndactyly of the second and third toes. The second case involved atrioventricular valve thickening resulting in tricuspid insufficiency and mitral stenosis. These cases suggest that if after a complete autopsy the findings are unprecedented, then the recurrent risk in a subsequent pregnancy may be high. This hypothesis has not been tested pr…

During the 2024/25 outbreak of bluetongue disease caused by serotype 3 of the bluetongue virus (BTV-3) in Germany, 6 newborn calves in a bee … ex with fluid-filled cavities in the neuroparenchyma and dilated lateral ventricles consistent with hydranencephaly was observed. Histologically, cortical hypo- and dysplasia, cystic defects, micro- and astrogliosis, and dystrophic calcifications were present. In all 3 examined calves, BTV-3 RNA was detected in blood via RT-PCR, and high antibody titers were foun …

Over the last 180 years, several theories concerning the origin of hydranencephaly have been proposed with an emphasis on infectious, aplastic, and vascular etiologies. In this report, we present a case of triplets with fetofetal transfusion syndrome of which 2 fetuses (1 and 2) developed almost similar hydranencephaly, whereas the third exhibited the features of a fetus papyraceus (3). In the monochorial triamniotic placenta, multiple arteriovenous anastomoses were detected, representing a probable route for the transmission of thrombi originating from fetus 3 causing visceral lesions in fetu…

During the 1974/75 lambing season numerous reports were received from various parts of the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa of … r than normal with a mass of 3,6-6,7 kg. They usually showed arthrogryposis, brachygnathy inferior, hydranencephaly, hypoplasia or segmental aplasia of the spinal cord and neurogenic muscular atrophy. The amnion contained 8,0-18,0 1 of amniotic fluid, the endometrium was oedematous, and cystic tube-like dilatations, 1-10 mm in diameter, filled with a clear fluid, …

In the outbreak of abortions, premature births, stillbirths and congenital arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly (AH) syndrome in Japan during the summer through winter of 1972-73 and 1973-74, precolostral sera from calves with congenital AH syndrome and normal calves were tested for neutralizing antibodies against some arboviruses, i.e. Akabane, Aino, Getah and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses. The incidence of antibody for Akabane virus was very high in calves with AH syndrome (49/59 or 83 per cent) as compared with normal calves (3/11 or 27 per cent), indicating an intimate correlation between t…

This paper explores whether the child's visual system is more or less vulnerable than the adult's visual system, whether the capacity of the child's visual system to recover from cerebral blindness exceeds the capacity of the adult's, and which brain structures can mediate visual functions after damage to the geniculostriate visual system. Reports about the development of visual functions in normal and in visually-deprived children and about the recovery of visual functions after incomplete damage to the occipital lobe, unilateral hemispherectomy, and in the absence of both cerebral hemisphere

A neonate was seen with hydranencephaly and aortic arch obstruction possibly caused by congenital cytomegalovirus infection. At autopsy the aortic arch was occluded by atheromatous plaque between the right brachiocephalic artery and left common carotid artery. Congenital cytomegalovirus infection may have caused cardiovascular disease and hydranencephaly in this case.

In hemihydranencephaly, the human brain lacks 1 complete hemisphere. An occlusion of the carotid artery, affecting all supplied territories, is thought to be the underlying mechanism. This extremely rare disorder, of which only 7 cases have been reported to date, is thought to occur before the last trimester of gestation (20th to 27th week), after neural migration but before synaptogenesis. We report on a 36-year-old man born at term, with no complications, from nonconsanguineous healthy parents. Cranial computed tomography had been performed because of left-sided headaches. Because of the ima…

An epizootic of congenital abnormalities of calves was observed in the Kyushu district of Japan from November 1985 through April 1986. The main clinical signs of the disease were impairment of mobility and signs of impairment of the nervous system. Opisthotonos was pronounced, and almost all calves were unable to suckle by themselves. The main macroscopic pathologic changes were hydranencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia. Although an etiologic agent was not isolated from the calves, serotest results of precolostral serum samples indicated that 128 of 139 (92%) abnormal calves had antibody for C…

At the end of the 1974 epizootic of bovine congenital arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly in south-eastern New South Wales, an Australia-wide serological survey (about 4,000 serums) was made to determine the ditribution of cattle possessing serum neutralising antibodies against Akabane virus. Eighty per cent of the serums from cattle in northern Australia (Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Queensland) were positive. A detailed study in the epizootic area in New South Wales (particularly around Bega) showed that 80 to 100% of serums from cows in herds in this area possessed neutralising…
