High-entropy thermal-stiffening hydrogels with fast switching dynamics.

Thermal-stiffening hydrogels exhibit a dramatic soft-to-stiff transition upon heating, making them ideal candidates for temperature-triggered self-protection and shape memory applications. However, their practical use is still hampered by a slow recovery process (generally >30 min) during cooling, attributed to sluggish mass diffusion and delayed phase dissolution. Herein, we present a high-entropy phase separation design to significantly accelerate the recovery dynamics of these materials. We demonstrate this concept using a thermal-stiffening poly(calcium acrylate)-based copolymer hydrogel b…

Sustainable bioactive hydrogels for organic contaminant elimination in wastewater.

Immobilized enzyme bioremediation is a promising technique for eliminating pollutants to alleviate water scarcity pressure but is severely hindered by poor enzymatic activity and stability. An effective charge-assisted H-bonding approach is developed to achieve high laccase loading and enzymatic activity on bio(cellulose)-based hydrogels. Notably, this strategy can be readily extended to lipase and catalase. The bio-based hydrogels are synthesized by grafting deoxyribonucleic acid onto the cellulose backbone through a one-step structural regulation, achieving high mechanical strength, enzyme l…

Halogen Bond-Tuning of Responsive Supramolecular Amino Acid Hydrogels.

N-Fmoc-pentafluoro-L-phenylalanine (F5) forms stable supramolecular hydrogels, mainly through π-π stacking of its aromatic groups. Hydrogen bonding-driven co-assembly of F5 with suitable partner molecules has been reported to affect the gel's properties, in accordance with what is observed in their corresponding co-crystal structures. Herein, we extended this hydrogel modulation strategy to halogen bonding (XB) interactions by introducing an XB-donating iodine atom in the para-position of the F5 phenyl ring. Under conditions mimicking biological environments, both crystal packing and hydrogela…

Cell-guiding microporous hydrogels by photopolymerization-induced phase separation.

Microporous scaffolds facilitate solute transport and cell-material interactions, but materials allowing for spatiotemporally controlled pore formation in aqueous solutions are lacking. Here, we propose cell-guiding microporous hydrogels by photopolymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) as instructive scaffolding materials for 3D cell culture. We formulate a series of PIPS resins consisting of two ionic polymers (norbornene-functionalized polyvinyl alcohol, dextran sulfate), di-thiol linker and water-soluble photoinitiator. Before PIPS, the polymers are miscible. Upon photocrosslinking, t…

Microenvironment-feedback regulated hydrogels as living wound healing materials.

Physiological microenvironments present a time-dependent variation during pathogenic or therapeutic processes, which call for life-like biomaterials of dynamic adaptation. However, current prevailed biomaterials maintain a passively responsive mode and lack autonomous and interactive dynamics. Striving for a paradigm of microenvironment interactive and self-regulatory medical agents as next-generation of biomaterials is of desperate need. Herein, we develop a microenvironment-feedback hydrogel as a living dressing biomaterial catering diabetic chronic wounds. This dynamic hydrogel leverages th

Biocompatible Interpenetrating Network Hydrogels with Dually Cross-Linked Polyol.

Modern tissue regeneration strategies rely on soft biocompatible materials with adequate mechanical properties to support the growing tissues. Polymer hydrogels have been shown to be available for this purpose, as their mechanical properties can be controllably tuned. In this work, we introduce interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) hydrogels with improved elasticity due to a dual cross-linking mechanism in one of the networks. The proposed hydrogels contain entangled polymer networks of covalently cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate/diacrylate (PEGMA/PEGDA) and poly(vinyl alcohol…

Design of PEG-Based Hydrogels as Soft Ionic Conductors.

Conductive hydrogels have gained interest in biomedical applications and soft electronics. To tackle the challenge of ionic hydrogels falling short of desired mechanical properties in previous studies, our investigation aimed to understand the pivotal structural factors that impact the conductivity and mechanical behavior of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based hydrogels with ionic conductivity. Polyether urethane diacrylamide (PEUDAm), a functionalized long-chain macromer based on PEG, was used to synthesize hydrogels with ionic conductivity conferred by incorporating ions into the liquid phase of…

Solid-Liquid Interface Lubricating Hydrogels for Tendon-Bone Healing.

A solid-liquid interface lubrication system composed of tissue and synovial fluid ensures the physiological functions of the tendon-bone (TB). However, after the TB tears, stress concentration and friction disrupt the solid-liquid interface lubrication of the TB and disturb its healing. Herein, solid-liquid interface lubrication hydrogels (MnCaP/HS) are constructed by encapsulating ion-coordinated calcium manganese phosphate microgels into covalent/ionic-cross-linked hyaluronic acid/sodium alginate dual networks. Solid lubrication interfaces are thus formed at the damaged TB through surface hy…

Switchable Adhesion of Hydrogels to Plant and Animal Tissues.

The ability to "switch on" adhesion between a thin hydrogel and a biological tissue can be useful in biomedical applications such as surgery. One way to accomplish this is with an electric field, a phenomenon termed electroadhesion (EA). Here, it is shown that cationic gels can be adhered by EA to tissues across all of biology. This includes tissues from animals, including humans and other mammals; birds; fish; reptiles (e.g., lizards); amphibians (e.g., frogs), and invertebrates (e.g., shrimp, worms). Gels can also be adhered to soft tissues from plants, including fruit (e.g., plums) and vege

Conformal immunomodulatory hydrogels for the treatment of otitis media.

Otitis media (OM), a condition stemming from the proliferation of various bacteria within the tympanic cavity (TC), is commonly addressed through the administration of ofloxacin (OFL), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Nevertheless, the escalating issue of antibiotic resistance and the challenge of drug leakage underscore the exploration of an alternative, more effective treatment modality in clinical practice. Here, we introduce a simple and easily implementable fluid-regulated strategy aimed at delivering immunomodulatory hydrogels into the TC, ensuring conformal contact with the irregular anato…

Thermoresponsive degradable hydrogels with renewable surfaces for protein removal.

Most biological materials used in the body undergo protein adsorption, which alters their biological functions. Previously, we introduced surface-degradable hydrogels as adsorbed protein-removing surfaces. However, only a few surface renewals were possible because of the hydrophilic nature of the hydrogels, which accelerated their degradation. In this research, we introduced thermoresponsive properties of hydrogels for limited degradation for protein removal. Hydrogels were synthesized by the radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane, and poly(ethylene…
