OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate at which age peak bone mass is reached among Icelandic women. Previous studies on this subject have been conflicting indicating that this might be reached sometime between the age of 16 and 35 years. We have also analyzed associated nutritional and physical factors which might be of use for preventive measures against osteoporosis.

Over the past three decades Icelandic children with congenital heart defects have been operated abroad. In 1990 the first infant with congenital heart defect underwent surgical correction here in Iceland that otherwise would have been transported to a foreign country. This paper summarizes our experience with children with congenital defects who have been operated in Iceland. Information was available on 293 family members and spouses of seven generations in an Icelandic family with high frequency of cleft of secondary palate and ankyloglossia. The authors have personally investigated 182 individuals in generations IV-VII and have drawn blood from over 100 members for genetic marker studies. Blood samples were taken from 18 healthy horses (Group A), 15 horses clinically diagnosed to have "haysickness" ("farmer's lung") (Group B), 10 closely related horses (Group C) and 14 inbred horses (Group D). The purpose of the study was to evaluate gender difference and the level of well-being among 26 Icelandic parents of children under 18 years with cancer and to compare mothers' and fathers' caregiving demands. Contrary to expectations, there was no overall significant difference between mothers' and fathers' well-being or their caregiving demands.
