BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Selective immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency is the most common human immunodeficiency, affecting approximately 1 in 500-800 individuals of European ancestry. It is defined by a serum IgA level below 7 mg/dL, with normal immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels. Since 1968, severe allergic transfusion reactions have been reported in IgA-deficient patients, often linked to anti-IgA antibodies. This led to recommendations for using IgA-deficient blood components in affected individuals. However, due to the rarity of such reactions, standardized and evide

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) has steadily increased over the past decades, especially in immunocompromised patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a patient with IgA-deficiency and mixed cutaneous infection by two slowly growing mycobacteria, Mycobacterium (M.) haemophilum and M. kansasii.
CONCLUSIONS: Cutaneous M. haemophilum infections most often result from HIV or transplantation-associated immunosuppression. Rarely, M. haemophilum may also infect healthy patients or iatrogenically immunosuppressed patients without transplantation. M. kansa

IgA deficiency is among the most common primary immune deficiency known. Its prevalence, ranging from 1/324-1/1850, depends upon the study group geographic location and its ethnicity. IgA deficiency is commonly associated with other immune defects such as IgG2, and IgG4 deficiency. In addition, ataxia telangiectasia has been associated with IgA deficiency as well. The clinical significans of IgA deficiency is presently unclear. However, increased susceptibility to atopy, autoimmunity, infections and cancer has been reported. Furthermore, majority of these diseases are bound to the mucosal surf

The levels of IgG, IgG subclasses, IgM and IgA were determined in serum from 17 patients with IgA deficiency and severe or frequent infections, allergy and/or autoimmunity (median age 7 years, range 2-19), 11 healthy IgA-deficient adults and 35 controls (median age 7 years, range 2-19). In serum from all groups IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies were determined against beta-lactoglobulin, E. coli O antigens and poliovirus type 1 antigen. In saliva of 15 IgA-deficient patients and 12 of the controls IgG, IgM and secretory component-carrying antibodies against E. coli O antigens and poliovirus type 1 w

Selective IgA deficiency (SIgAD) is the most frequent primary immune defect. Since SIgAD is not characterized by relevant infectious issues in most cases, it is often diagnosed during the diagnostic work up of several and different autoimmune disorders, which are associated with this primary immune defect. The genetic background of SIgAD is complex and three HLA haplotypes resulted to be more frequently associated with it; in detail, two of them include HLA-DQB1∗02 allelic variants, which are essential predisposing factors to develop Celiac Disease (CD). Here, we discuss the evidence regarding

Selective IgA deficiency (sIgAD) is the most common primary immunodeficiency disease (PID), with an estimated occurrence from about 1:3000 to even 1:150, depending on population. sIgAD is diagnosed in adults and children after the 4th year of age, with immunoglobulin A level below 0.07 g/L and normal levels of IgM and IgG. Usually, the disease remains undiagnosed throughout the patient's life, due to its frequent asymptomatic course. If symptomatic, sIgAD is connected to more frequent viral and bacterial infections of upper respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal tracts, as well as autoimmu

One of the most common primary immunodeficiencies is the selective deficiency of IgA, which is present in very variable clinical conditions. This situation had conducted to different criteria with respect to the clinical meaning in a particular patient. The association of immunodeficiency of IgA and intestinal malabsorption is reported as statistically significant in the international literature. Nevertheless, the precise pathogenic connection between them is unknown. The relationship between bowel and immune system is reviewed here, and illustrated with the clinical case of a six-year old gir

Concentrations of serum IgA, IgG, and IgM were determined for 829 adult Beagles from a commercial kennel in which several IgA-deficient dogs had been identified previously (index kennel). These values were compared with measurements of 100 adult dogs from another Beagle kennel (control kennel). After adjustment for differences in the ages and gender of the dogs, dogs from the index kennel had significantly (P less than 0.0001) lower IgA concentrations (mean, 46 mg/dl) than dogs from the control kennel (mean, 68 mg/dl). Regardless of kennel, males had significantly (P less than 0.01) higher IgA

Background: Selective immunoglobulin A deficiency (sIgAD), the most common primary immunodeficiency, is associated with recurrent respiratory infections. Despite the established role of IgA in mucosal immunity, population-based data evaluating COVID-19 susceptibility and severity among individuals with sIgAD are scarce. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the association between selective IgA deficiency and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, recurrent infection, COVID-19-related hospitalization, and vaccination uptake. Design and Setting: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohor

Nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (NLH) is a rare, benign condition of lymphoid proliferation within the gastrointestinal tract. NLH is a recognized feature of specific immunodeficiency syndromes, including common variable immunodeficiency and selective IgA deficiency. NLH may develop throughout the gastrointestinal tract; however, it usually develops in the small intestine. We report an extremely unusual case of previously undiagnosed selective IgA deficiency presenting with subacute rectosigmoid obstruction.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the dominant antibody found in our mucosal secretions and has long been recognized to play an important role in protecting our epithelium from pathogens. Recently, IgA has been shown to be involved in gut homeostatic regulation by 'recognizing' and shaping our commensal microbes. Paradoxically, yet selective IgA-deficiency is often described as asymptomatic and there is a paucity of studies only focused on the mice and human gut microbiome context fully ignoring other niches of our body and our commensal viruses. Here, we used as a model the human oral cavity and empl

BACKGROUND: Primary antibody deficiencies (PADs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders, characterised by increased susceptibility to recurrent bacterial infections. Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most important PAD from the clinical point of view and selective IgA deficiency (IgAD) is the most common PAD. However, the underlying gene defect in both is still unknown. As a recent study in Europe showed an association between a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of AICDA gene with PADs, this study was performed to evaluate such an association in Iranian patients.

Screening of close relatives of Swedish patients with selective immunoglobulin A deficiency (IgAD) and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) for serum immunoglobulin levels has identified the positive family history of IgAD/CVID as the most significant risk factor for developing the disease. The relative risk for siblings of patients with IgAD was estimated to be approximately 50. In 12 of 34 Swedish multiplex families identified in the study, both IgAD and CVID occurred, usually CVID in the parental generation and IgAD in the subsequent generation. This proportion was much higher than expec

Sixty-seven children with symptomatic IgA deficiency were studied on two separate occasions. Eighteen had aIgAd at presentation, and 49 had pIgAd. IgA concentrations had risen to the normal range for age in 22.2% of children presenting with aIgAd and 77.6% presenting with pIgAd when restudied at a median interval of 3.2 and 3.0 years, respectively. IgG subclass concentrations were measured by enzyme immunoassay in serum samples collected at enrollment from 12 children with aIgAd and 22 children with pIgAd. IgG2 and IgG4 concentrations for these 34 children were below the 5th centile for age an

There is an increased prevalence (P less than 0.001) of IgA deficiency in children with juvenile-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (9/366) but not in adults with insulin-dependent diabetes (0/421). The juvenile diabetics with IgA deficiency have other immune-associated diseases, such as thyroiditis and chronic active hepatitis, and have a history of infections. Four of the nine IgA-deficient diabetics we studied have autoantibodies to endocrine organs. Seven of eight have the HLA-B8, a proportion significantly (P less than 0.05) greater than control populations. Based on the clinical f
