Vaccination of calves against Taenia saginata infection using antigens collected during in vitro cultivation of larvae: passive protection via colostrum from vaccinated cows and vaccination of calves protected by maternal antibody.

Six-to-11-day-old calves which received colostrum from cows vaccinated with in vitro culture antigens of Taenia saginata during their last month of pregnancy showed a high level of resistance to a challenge infection with T saginata eggs. Although colostral antibody reduced the numbers of larvae which became established it did not promote destruction of those which had undergone development. Calves which had received colostrum from vaccinated dams were themselves vaccinated with culture antigen when they were eight to 10 weeks old. These calves showed strong immunity to a challenge infection o

Some studies of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus infection in calves.

Six dairy calves, six and one-half to nine months old, were exposed to a strain of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus of bovine fetal origin by one of the various routes - nasal, vaginal, preputial or contact. Neither after initial exposure nor following challenge of their immunity did any of these animals manifest the IBR respiratory syndrome, although two of them (inoculated per vagina/prepuce) developed pustular vulvovaginitis or balanoposthitis. Also, one five-day old dairy calf which had received colostrum and milk of its IBR-immune dam, was inoculated intranasally with the sam

CMV infected or not CMV infected: that is the question.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is widespread in the human population. Normally, in adolescents and adults, prior exposure to CMV can readily be determined by IgG assays. However, in individuals where antibody production is impaired, such as patients with common variable immunodeficiency disease or in the very young where maternal antibodies are present, diagnosis of CMV infection is problematic using such assays. In this issue of the European Journal of Immunology, a study by Sester and colleagues [Eur J Immunol 2013. 43: 1099-1108] using CD4(+) T-cell immunity as a marker of infection clearl

Transplacental transfer of anti-malarial antibodies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women and young children bear the highest burden of malaria morbidity/mortality. While transplacental transfer of malaria antibodies protects the child, the efficiency varies by antigen and maternal factors. This systematic review assessed transplacental transfer of malaria antibodies, factors associated with reduced transfer and identified knowledge gaps for future research. METHOD: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and HINARI from the inception of databases until January 2025. We included published articles reporting anti-malaria antibodies in the mother and ne

Biological factors that may impair transplacental transfer of RSV antibodies: Implications for maternal immunization policy and research priorities for low- and middle-income countries.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading viral cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI), including bronchiolitis and pneumonia, in infants and children worldwide. Protection against RSV is primarily antibody mediated and passively acquired RSV neutralizing antibody can protect infants from RSV ALRI. Maternal immunization is an attractive strategy for the prevention of RSV in early infancy when immune responses to active immunization may be suboptimal and most severe RSV disease and death occur. However, several biologic factors have been shown to potentially attenuate or

Placental Histopathology and Transplacental Transfer of RSV-specific Neutralizing Antibodies The Silver Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternally acquired passive immunity via transplacental antibody transport is crucial for the protection of infants against infectious diseases in early life. We examined whether placental histological characteristics impact the transplacental transfer of natural respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-specific neutralizing antibodies. METHODS: We performed a prospective, observational, cross-sectional study. Pregnant women were enrolled with a 1:1:1 inclusion ratio of extremely preterm-born infants (24-32 weeks), moderately preterm-born infants (33-36 weeks) and term-born infants (37-4

The immune response in iron-deficient children. Isohaemagglutinin titres and antibody response to immunization.

The primary antibody response of iron-deficient children to diphtheria and typhoid immunization was measured. In 5 children immunized with diphtheria toxoid, there was no increase in antitoxin titre. Of 8 children who were given typhoid vaccine, 6 showed an increase in Salmonella typhi O agglutinin titre. All the iron-deficient children had normal isohaemagglutinin titres.

Advances in research and application of therapeutic antibody strategies for porcine rotavirus prevention and control.

Rotavirus (RV) is one of the leading causes of acute viral gastroenteritis in young children and various neonatal animals worldwide, posing significant challenges to both public health and livestock production. Porcine rotavirus (PoRV) induces acute enteric infection in neonatal piglets, resulting in severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, and is frequently associated with co-infections that disrupt gastrointestinal function and cause huge economic losses. At present, no specific antiviral therapy is available for PoRV infection, and vaccination remains the most cost-effective and widely u

Dilemma in prevention of pertussis infection among infants under six months in China.

INTRODUCTION: Pertussis poses a significant threat to infants under six months due to their immature immune systems, limited maternal antibody protection, and constraints in the vaccination schedule. Despite vaccination efforts, this group remains highly susceptible to severe complications. Addressing these challenges is crucial for improving the health outcomes of infants in China. AREAS COVERED: This review examines the primary challenges in preventing pertussis infections among infants under six months in China, focusing on factors such as underdeveloped immune system and inadequate matern

Evaluation of the effect of live LaSota Newcastle disease virus vaccine as primary immunization on immune development in broilers.

Newcastle disease remains a major concern to the poultry industry; however, it can be managed with effective vaccination programs. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2 1× doses of live LaSota strain Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine administered oculo-nasally on d one and 21 on development of humoral and cell-mediated immune response in broilers, and to compare different immunization schedules. Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment I (n = 320), Ross 308 birds were randomly assigned to an unvaccinated control group or vaccinated treatment. [Both treatment

Protection of neonatal mice from group B streptococcal infection by maternal immunization with beta C protein.

Group B streptococci (GBS) cause the majority of cases of neonatal sepsis and meningitis in the United States. Immunization of women of childbearing age is one strategy under consideration for the prevention of neonatal disease. The beta C protein, a 130-kDa antigen present in many clinical isolates of GBS, was purified from GBS by extraction into sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-containing buffer, preparative SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and electroelution. Purified beta C protein antigen (25 micrograms) with Freund's adjuvant was used to immunize rabbits. Rabbits developed enzyme-link
