Background: The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in forced displacement, with over six million Ukrainian refugees across Europe, of whom 81,770 are residing in Norway. This displacement and, in many cases, preceding war experiences, has led to increased vulnerability to trauma and mental health challenges. There is to date little knowledge about the extent to which structured mental health interventions can mitigate symptoms in Ukrainian refugees. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), a short-term trauma-focused intervention, has demonstrated efficacy in reducing post-traumatic stress diso

Virtual reality is a promising tool for improving efficacy of exposure therapy for childhood anxiety disorders (CADs), particularly for exposures that are challenging to orchestrate in vivo. The present study compared virtual reality exposure (VRE) to verbal imaginal exposure (IE) on anxiety elicited, homework completion, and preparation for subsequent exposures. Forty-five youth with CADs completed both types of exposure in session (order randomly assigned), practiced one form of exposure as homework (randomly assigned), and returned a week later to repeat both exposures (in randomized order)

This case study describes the treatment of a 32-year-old woman with Down's syndrome and a recent head injury, for phobia to treatment of her feet by physiotherapists. The phobia had the potential to severely limit rehabilitation progress in terms of the client regaining the ability to stand, assist with transfers (including to and from a car), and walk. A single session, in vivo, flooding intervention was used. The treatment resulted in a substantial change in tolerance of physiotherapists' touching of feet to the extent rehabilitation was able to proceed within the bounds of expectation had a

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relative effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with imaginal exposure (CBT + IE) and CBT combined with virtual reality exposure (CBT + VRE) for symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and fear of negative evaluation (FNE) in adolescents.
METHODS: In a three-armed randomized controlled trial (RCT), a total of 51 adolescents who met the DSM-5 criteria for SAD were randomly assigned to either CBT + IE (N = 17; M age = 16.41; SD = 0.61), CBT + VRE (N = 17; M age = 16.35; SD = 0.70), or a waitlist control condition

Collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (cFSGS), also known as collapsing glomerulopathy is currently classified under the rubric of FSGS. However, its defining morphological features are in stark contrast to those observed in most other variants of FSGS. During the early stage of the disease, the lesion is characterized pathologically by an implosive segmental and/or global collapse of the glomerular capillary tufts, marked hypertrophy and hyperplasia of podocytes, and severe tubulointerstitial disease. With advancement of the disease, segmental and/or global glomerulosclerosis is also

International Classification of Diseases (11th ed.; ICD-11) Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a new diagnostic category consisting of PTSD and disturbances of self-organization (DSO) symptoms. This study compares the trajectories of ICD-11 PTSD and DSO symptoms change in three treatments: a phase-based intervention, STAIR Narrative Therapy (SNT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and skills-training in affect and interpersonal regulation (STAIR). Ninety-two adult patients with ICD-11 CPTSD following childhood abuse were randomly assigned to treatment conditions. Piecewise latent curve mo

Exposure therapy is an efficacious, frontline treatment for anxiety disorders. Digital interventions for anxiety are effective and increase access to care. Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa, and anxiety disorders have notable commonalities among symptoms and maintaining factors. Recent research suggests that exposure therapy is also an effective treatment for anorexia nervosa spectrum. The purpose of this study was to adapt digital anxiety treatment modules into digital eating disorder treatment modules, for specific use with anorexia nervosa. The Scree

RATIONALE: The administration of glucocorticoids (GC) as an adjunct to exposure represents a promising strategy to improve one-session exposure outcome in anxiety disorders. It remains to be determined whether similar effects can be induced with the use of acute stress. Furthermore, the possible modulation of exposure effects by hormonal factors (e.g., use of oral contraceptives (OCs)) was not explored so far.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether acute stress prior to one-session exposure for spider fear affects its efficacy in women using oral contraceptives (OC) relative to free-cycling (FC)

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common among children and adolescents who have experienced traumatic events. Exposure therapy (ET) has been shown to be effective in treating PTSD in adults. However, its efficacy remains uncertain in children and adolescents.
AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of ET in children and adolescents with PTSD.
METHOD: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest, LILACS, and international trial registries for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessed ET in children and adolescents (aged ≤18 ye

OBJECTIVES: It is unclear how to address PTSD in the context of chronic pain management. Here we examine the potential benefits of an addition of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD for adults attending multidisciplinary CBT for chronic pain.
METHODS: Four adults seeking treatment for chronic pain from a specialized pain rehabilitation service were offered PE for PTSD using a replicated, randomized, single-case experimental phase design, prior to commencing a 5-week multidisciplinary CBT program for chronic pain. Pre-, post-, follow-up, and daily measures allowed examination of PTSD and

BACKGROUND: Although effective treatments for post-traumatic stress-disorder (PTSD) in adults are well established, research reporting on the effectiveness of treatments for older people remains limited.
AIMS: To systematically review global evidence reporting on the effectiveness of treatments for PTSD in older adults.
METHOD: We searched several databases for randomized controlled trials on PTSD in older people.
RESULTS: From a total of 17,987 search hits, 10 studies met our inclusion criteria; these reported on the effectiveness of narrative exposure therapy (4 trials), Cognitive Behavio

Fibromyalgia (FM) is associated with significant economic costs. Given the limited availability of effective and accessible treatments, it is crucial to develop and assess the cost-effectiveness of new interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of online exposure therapy (EXP-CBT) versus online traditional CBT (T-CBT) for FM. We analyzed health economic data from a randomized controlled trial in which 274 participants with FM were assigned to either EXP-CBT or T-CBT. The time horizon was 15 months, and treatment effectiveness relative to costs was evaluated from both a

Prolonged exposure (PE) is a first-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) available in specialty mental health. PE for primary care (PE-PC) is a brief version of PE adapted for primary care mental health integration, composed of four-eight, 30-min sessions. Using retrospective data of PE-PC training cases from 155 Veterans Health Administration (VHA) providers in 99 VHA clinics who participated in a 4- to 6-month PE-PC training and consultation program, we examined patients' PTSD and depression severity across sessions via mixed effects multilevel linear modeling. Fibromyalgia (FM) is a prevalent chronic pain disorder associated with large suffering and substantial societal costs. Pain-related avoidance behaviour and hypervigilance to bodily symptoms are common in FM and contribute in maintaining and exacerbating the disorder. Exposure therapy targeting avoidance behaviours and hypervigilance has shown promise in the treatment of FM. The present study investigated mediators of treatment outcome in exposure therapy for FM. We used data from a randomised trial, where 140 participants were allocated to 10-week internet-delivered exposure therapy or to a wa

During the last decade a number of studies have been conducted in order to examine if virtual reality exposure therapy can be an alternative form of therapy for the treatment of mental disorders and particularly for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Imaginal exposure therapy, which is one of the components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, cannot be easily applied to all patients and in cases like those virtual reality can be used as an alternative or a supportive psychotherapeutic technique. Most studies using virtual reality have focused on anxiety disorders, mainly in specific phobias, but

A number of victims of post traumatic stress disorder, apart from the rest of their symptom constellation, suffer flashbacks. These flashbacks occur during the waking state and frequently are very disabling. From among this group of patients, we have identified a few who demonstrate epileptiform discharge emanating from temporal lobe foci. We have postulated that indeed the flashbacks might represent an amalgam of abnormal neuronal firing along with the expression of a dynamically charged event. Eight cases are documented which illustrate this pattern. In all eight cases, the flashbacks were c

Exposure is highly effective for treating acrophobia and there is growing consensus that cognitive mechanisms play an important role in exposure-based therapies. The present randomized controlled trial investigated whether adding a Cognitive Bias Modification - Interpretation (CBM-I) training to a single-session exposure therapy further facilitates cognitive change. The sample included diagnosed acrophobia patients (N = 81), all of whom received exposure therapy. One day later they were randomized to receive either CBM-I or a sham training. The CBM-I trained patients to interpret and appraise
