Fast-track surgery in India.

Fast-track surgery or 'enhanced recovery after surgery' or 'multimodal rehabilitation after surgery' is a form of protocol-based perioperati … al aspects of this programme among gastrointestinal and general surgeons. There is little data from India in the available literature on the application of fast-tracking in gastrointestinal surgery. In a country such as India the existing healthcare structure stands to gain the most by widespread adoption of fast-track methods. Early discharge, early am …

Women's cardiovascular health in India.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death among adult women in many parts of India and a major cause of morbidity. In some parts of the world, gender inequities have been observed in cardiovascular healthcare and cardiovascular outcomes. The authors discuss the data for potential disparities in cardiovascular healthcare for women in India. Data on cardiovascular healthcare provision and CVD outcomes among women in India are generally lacking. The little available data suggest that women in rural areas, younger women and girl children with CVD are less likely to receive appr…

Sporotrichosis in sub-himalayan India.

Sporotrichosis is endemic in the Sub-Himalayan belt, which ranges from the northern to the north-eastern Indian subcontinent. Similar to many parts of the developing world, sporotrichosis is commonly recognized clinically in this region however consolidated epidemiological data is lacking. We report epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data from a hundred culture positive cases of sporotrichosis. Out of 305 clinically suspicious cases of sporotrichosis, a total of 100 isolates were identified as Sporothrix schenckii species complex (S. schenckii) on culture. Out of the culture proven …

Adult intussusception in Northern India.

BACKGROUND: Adult intussusception is infrequently encountered in Asians. The diagnosis is often late because of the variable presentation. The optimal treatment is not universally agreed upon. PURPOSE: To determine the causes and management of this uncommon entity in India. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with postoperative diagnosis of intussusception between March 2003 and March 2008 was conducted in a tertiary care centre in North India. Data relating to diagnosis, treatment and histopathology was analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients, aged 15-72 years with 28 intussuscept…

Venous thrombo-embolism in India.

INTRODUCTION: Venous thrombo-embolism (VTE) has traditionally been considered rare in Asia. Recent reports from Hong Kong and Singapore indi … ity in those with confirmed pulmonary embolism was 13.5%. CONCLUSION: VTE is no longer a rarity in India. General surgical operations are the most common causes of postoperative DVT. Pulmonary embolism continues to be 'suspected' more often than it is diagnosed.

Hepatobiliary tuberculosis in western India.

Tuberculous involvement of liver as a part of disseminated tuberculosis is seen in up to 50-80% cases, but localized hepatobiliary tuberculosis (HBTB) is uncommonly described. During 6 years, a total of 280 consecutive patients with TB were evaluated prospectively for the presence and etiology of liver involvement. Cases with miliary TB or immunosuppression and cases receiving anti-tuberculosis drugs prior to presentation to our unit were excluded (38 cases). Details of clinical, biochemical and imaging findings and histology/microbiology were noted. Of 242 included cases, 38 patients (15.7%;

Sporotrichosis in north-east India.

Reports on the occurrence of sporotrichosis in some parts of north-east India are scarce. We report here five cases of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis from north-east India, including one from Sikkim State and four from distant places in the north-eastern part of West Bengal. All patients were full or part-time farmers or gardeners. Diagnosis of sporotrichosis was confirmed by isolation of Sporothrix schenckii in culture and in vitro conversion of the isolates to yeast form. The cases were treated with 50% solution of potassium iodide.

An outbreak of viral encephalitis occurred in Gorakhpur, India, from July through November 2005. The etiologic agent was confirmed to be Japanese encephalitis virus by analyzing 326 acute-phase clinical specimens for virus-specific antibodies and viral RNA and by virus isolation. Rapid DOTS expansion in India.

Since late 1998 the coverage of the DOTS strategy in India has been expanded rapidly. In both 2000 and 2001 the country probably accounted for more than half the global increase in the number of patients treated under DOTS and by early 2002 more than a million patients were being treated in this way in India. As a result, nearly 200 000 lives were saved. The lessons learnt relate to the importance of the following elements of the programme: (1) getting the science right and ensuring technical excellence; (2) building commitment and ensuring the provision of funds and flexibility in their utili…
