OBJECTIVES: Carcinogenicity and chronic toxicity of indium-tin oxide (ITO) were examined by inhalation exposure of rats and mice to ITO aerosol.
METHODS: Fifty mice of both sexes were exposed to ITO at 0 (control), 0.01, 0.03 or 0.1 mg/m(3) for 6 h/day, 5 day/wk for 104 wk, and 50 rats of both sexes were exposed to 0, 0.01 or 0.03 mg/m(3) ITO for the same time period. The repeated exposure of 50 rats of both sexes to 0.1 mg/m(3) ITO was discontinued at the 26th wk, followed by clean air exposure for the remaining 78 wk.

Platelet scintigraphy (PSC) with indium-111 labelled platelets has been confirmed as an adequate method for the detection of intracardiac thrombi in patients with heart disease. We performed PSC of the heart and the neck vessels in 27 stroke patients with suspected cardiac embolism and as control on 10 patients with atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries without evidence of heart disease. Donor granulocytes, obtained by filtration leukophoresis, were labeled with In-111-oxine and injected into seven severely neutropenic patients. All patients were febrile, and presumed to have infection, although infection was eventually proved in only five. Excellent demonstration of infection was achieved in two patients, and fair localization in one. One negative scan became positive when repeated with sedimentation-derived cells from a different donor. This method may be useful in detecting infections in neutropenic patients.
