Although almost 10% of all newborn infants need some form of respiratory assistance after birth, only 1% will require more advanced forms of resuscitation. Because these rare events cannot always be anticipated, pediatricians and neonatologists may not be readily available and resuscitation will have to be performed by anesthesiologists. In recent years, international guidelines for neonatal resuscitation have been revised by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA), as well as the European R

PURPOSE: Stroke is related to many different cerebrovascular events, with different ethiology and pathogenesis which are not clear enough. Frequency of the stroke in newborn infants is 1:4000 live births. Term infants are affected more frequently; clinical presentation typicaly is manifested by multifocal seisures between 1st and 4th day of life. Laboratory tests include analyses of prothrombotic factors which increase risk of thromboembolism.
WORK METHOD: We descriptively showed a term newborn with of middle cerebral arthery infarction.
CASE REPORT: A firstborn female neonate was received i

From 1985 to 1996 (12 years) we saw 24 neonates and small infants with septic arthritis of the hip joint. A minority of these infants was simultaneously affected by osteomyelitis of the femoral neck or the acetabulum. Clinical signs are a painful leg, pseudoparalysis, uneasiness and refusal to drink. Quantitative measurements of C-reactive protein (CRP) are more reliable then leucocyte count and sedimentation rate. Ultrasound images yield early information about capsular swelling and septic effusion; in late cases US can visualize femoral neck necrosis. Emergency arthrotomy to relieve the join

Listeriosis of the newborn is a relatively rare disease, presenting with clinical signs of septicemia. Early onset disease, resembling group B streptococcal septicemia, is already transmitted from the mother to the fetus and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Late onset septicemia occurs as sporadic or as epidemic disease, usually beyond the fifth day of life. Epidemics can be caused by consumption of contaminated food or by nosocomial infections in neonatal units. Phage typing offers an opportunity to elucidate the route of transmission. During a 7 years period, 5 neonates ware

This article describes 12 patients (aged 1-28 days) suffering from neonatal osteomyelitis diagnosed between 1975 and 1987. Complications had occurred during 5 pregnancies, 9 patients had problems in the perinatal period (5 infections). In 9 cases (75%) only local symptoms existed, of which localized swelling, erythema, and loss of function were the most common. Deep soft-tissue swelling was the most common initial radiographic finding. Staphylococcus aureus (penicillin-resistant in all cases) was the most important aetiological organism (66%). Haemolytic streptococci occurred in 3 patients (gr

The authors describe a newborn, in which a diagnosis of ascites was made before birth by ultrasound. Ascites without other signs of hydrops may be caused by meconium-peritonitis, perforation of the bile ducts, disorders of the portal or systemic circulation, flow disturbances in the lymphatic vessels, urinary obstruction or a ruptured ovarian cyst. In this case there was a chylous ascites in a child with Down's syndrome. Diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment are discussed. With conservative treatment the child was free of symptoms at the age of 6 months.

In the lifespan of a human being the two extremes, the early childhood and old age are prone to septicaemia because of poorly functioning anti-infectious defensive mechanisms. In a newborn full term baby these mechanisms are all present but still unexperienced. The importance of both specific and nonspecific factors will be discussed. The etiologic agents, causing septicaemia in nurseries undergo continuous change. In Helsinki we have during the last 20 years experienced staphylococci to start with, changing then to Gram-negative rods, to streptococci group B and now we have increasing difficu
