BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the staple of malaria vector control. Given their importance, insecticide resistance (IR) is extremely concerning. Understanding how ITNs simultaneously impact the evolution of IR and malaria control is of critical importance, especially with next-generation mixture ITNs (NGM-ITNs) becoming available.
METHOD: We developed a mosquito population dynamics and genetics model to explore the simultaneous impact of ITNs on both malaria transmission (measured as vectorial capacity, an entomological measure of transmission) and IR evolution (resistance g

BACKGROUND: Cluster-randomized controlled trials (cluster-RCTs) have demonstrated variation in the epidemiological efficacy of different next-generation insecticide-treated net (ITN) types, with some providing shorter-lived impact than others. Further studies are needed to assess changes in the insecticidal durability of these ITNs over time to complement cluster-RCT results.
METHODS: A series of experimental hut trials were performed to evaluate the bioefficacy of new and field-aged next-generation ITNs (PermaNet® 3.0, Royal Guard®, Interceptor® G2) compared to a pyrethroid-only net (Interce

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid resistance in the key malaria vectors threatens the success of pyrethroid-treated nets. To overcome pyrethroid resistance, Interceptor® G2 (IG2), a 'first-in-class' dual insecticidal net that combines alpha-cypermethrin with chlorfenapyr, was developed. Chlorfenapyr is a pro-insecticide, requiring bio-activation by oxidative metabolism within the insect's mitochondria, constituting a mode of action preventing cross-resistance to pyrethroids. Recent epidemiological trials conducted in Benin and Tanzania confirm IG2's public health value in areas with pyrethroid-resistant

BACKGROUND: Access to human hosts by Anopheles mosquitoes is a key determinant of vectorial capacity for malaria, but it can be limited by use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). In Malawi, pyrethroid-treated LLINs with and without the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO) were distributed to control malaria. This study investigated the blood-feeding patterns of malaria vectors and whether LLINs containing pyrethroid and PBO led to a reduction of human blood feeding than those containing only pyrethroids.
METHODS: Mosquitoes were sampled inside houses from May 2019 through April 2020 by a

Despite the growing evidence that insecticide-treated mosquito nets reduce malaria morbidity and mortality in a variety of epidemiological conditions, their value against lymphatic filariasis infection and disease is yet to be established. The impact of untreated bednets on the prevalence of Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold) (Nematoda: Filarioidea) infection and disease was investigated on Bagabag island in Papua New Guinea, where both malaria and filariasis are transmitted by the same vector mosquitoes of the Anopheles punctulatus Dönitz group (Diptera: Culicidae). Community-wide surveys were co

Combining larviciding with insecticide treated nets (ITNs) can reduce malaria transmission. However, most modelling analyses use generalized scenarios rather than incorporating local epidemiological and ecological contexts. In Tanzania and other countries, larviciding is increasingly being prioritized in national strategies, with growing advocacy for its broader implementation, to achieving sustained malaria reduction. District-specific modelling is therefore essential to capture variation in transmission ecology, seasonality, and varying coverage levels, providing evidence that is both rigoro

BACKGROUND: Since its inception in 2005, the US President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) has played a major role in the reductions in malaria morbidity and mortality observed across Africa. With the status of PMI funding and operations currently uncertain, we aimed to quantify the impact that a fully functioning PMI would have on malaria cases and deaths in Africa during 2025.
METHODS: We combined detailed spatiotemporal information on planned 2025 PMI and non-PMI malaria commodity procurement and distribution in Africa (focusing on insecticide-treated bednets, artemisinin-based combination thera

INTRODUCTION: National malaria programmes must weigh the relative benefits of different vector control and elimination tools to prioritise resource allocation with the greatest impact. This study assesses the epidemiological and entomological impacts of piperonyl butoxide insecticide-treated nets (PBO ITN-only arm) compared with the combination of two annual non-pyrethroid indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaigns and standard pyrethroid ITNs (IRS+Standard Pyrethroid ITN arm) in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: After almost 70 years of using indoor residual spraying (IRS) as the primary intervention for malaria vector control, the Republic of Panama wanted to evaluate the operational feasibility and acceptability of distributing long-lasting insecticidal hammock nets (LLIHNs) and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in the country.
METHODS: A pilot study conducted in 2019 distributed LLINs and LLIHNs to cover all sleeping spaces in 15 high burden localities of the indigenous Comarca of Guna Yala and measured retention, coverage, use and physical deterioration, washing and drying practi

INTRODUCTION: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are one of the main interventions used for malaria control. However, these nets may also be effective against other vector borne diseases (VBDs). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the efficacy of ITNs, insecticide-treated curtains (ITCs) and insecticide-treated house screening (ITS) against Chagas disease, cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, dengue, human African trypanosomiasis, Japanese encephalitis, lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis.

BACKGROUND: Long lasting insecticidal nets (LN) are a primary method of malaria prevention. Before new types of LN are approved they need to meet quality and efficacy standards set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme. The process of evaluation has three phases. In Phase I the candidate LN must meet threshold bioassay criteria after 20 standardized washes. In Phase II washed and unwashed LNs are evaluated in experimental huts against wild, free flying anopheline mosquitoes. In Phase III the LN are distributed to households in malaria endemic areas, sampled over three years of use and tested

The Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) Elimination Initiative in the Indian subcontinent was launched in 2005 as a joint effort between the governments in the Region (India, Nepal and Bangladesh) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The objective is to reduce the annual VL incidence below 1/10,000 inhabitants by 2015 based on detection and treatment of VL cases and vector control. We present here a review of studies published in the period 2005-2010 on the efficacy of different tools to control Phlebotomus argentipes. The review indicates that the current indoor residual spraying (IRS) and novel

The World Health Organization (WHO) tunnel test is a standardised laboratory assay used to characterise the biological availability and potency of active ingredients on the surface of an insecticide-treated bed net (ITN) against host-seeking mosquitoes. However, the assay provides only endpoint measurements-the proportions of mosquitoes killed and blood-fed - and therefore offers no insight into how mosquitoes interact with the ITN. Therefore, complementary behavioural data would be highly valuable, for example to reveal the extent to which mosquitoes engage with the net, thereby helping to ex

BACKGROUND: Following the elimination of human malaria, Malaysia has experienced an increasing burden of zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi malaria, particularly in Sabah. Evidence on the cost-effectiveness of vector control interventions is needed to inform policy decisions and optimise resource allocation. This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of Outdoor Residual Spraying (ORS), Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs), and their combined use for controlling P. knowlesi malaria in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
METHODS: A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted from the healthcare provider perspec

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka is endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania donovani. Long-lasting insecticide-impregnated bed nets (LLINs) have been used for vector control, but their impact on interruption of sand fly bites remains untested in Sri Lanka. This study assessed the efficacy of LLINs as compared with untreated bed nets in reducing vector-human contact and density of Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector of CL in Sri Lanka.
METHODS: A cluster-randomized trial was conducted with an intervention group (treated nets) and a control group (untreated nets) in CL-endemic sites.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to kill approximately 650 000 people each year. There is evidence that some second-generation insecticide-treated nets, which combine insecticide formulations with different modes of action, are protective against malaria while the nets are new; however, evidence for their impact over 3 years is scarce. In this study, we report the third-year results of a cluster-randomised controlled trial assessing the long-term effectiveness of dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a cluster-randomised controlle

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellents have been widely used for the prevention of mosquito bites but their efficacy in reducing mosquito-borne diseases has never been evaluated in Africa. Additionally, spatial repellents have the potential of being critical tools in the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases in contexts where typical vectors control efforts such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spray (IRS) are inaccessible or underutilized such as among displaced populations or in emergency relief settings. BACKGROUND: Chadian pastoral nomads are highly exposed to malaria due to their lifestyle and their mobility between various endemic areas. To inform strategies to reduce nomads' risk of malaria and associated morbidity and mortality, it is important to understand the factors associated to their knowledge of malaria transmission and prevention practices.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study among Arab, Dazagada and Fulani pastoral nomadic groups was conducted in February and October 2021. A validated structured electronic questionnaire was administered to assess knowledge of malaria. Attitudes and

In 2009, malaria, a disease transmitted by the bite of an infective Anopheles mosquito, caused an estimated 225 million clinical cases and 781,000 deaths worldwide, of which more than 90% occurred in children aged <5 years in Africa. Approximately half of the world's population, or 3 billion persons, are at risk for acquiring the illness. Malaria is transmitted most intensely in central and western Africa, where in some areas >40% of children aged <10 years are infected and residents can be bitten by more than one infective mosquito every day of the year.

BACKGROUND: In Benin, Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the cornerstones of malaria prevention. In the context of high resistance of Anopheles gambiae to pyrethroids, The National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) has undertaken a full coverage of IRS in a no-flood zone in the Oueme region, coupled with the distribution of LLINs in a flood zone. We assessed the impact of this campaign on phenotypic resistance, kdr (knock-down resistance) and ace-1(R) (insensitive acetylcholinesterase) mutations.
