Of 10 patients with hairy cell leukaemia treated with 3 mU recombinant alpha-interferon daily, 9 showed clinical haematological response--including 2 patients who achieved complete remission. Unmaintained responses have continued for as long as 18+ months after completion of therapy. There was no significant toxicity associated with this treatment schedule.

Persistent condylomata acuminata in a 21-year-old patient with diabetes mellitus were treated with highly purified interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) obtained by recombinant DNA technology. Daily dose was 1.5 X 10(6) IU, given subcutaneously. Already during treatment the condylomata regressed. Two weeks after the end of therapy, i.e. after a total dose of 10.5 X 10(6) IU IFN-alpha, all condylomata had completely receded. Blood glucose levels remained constant with concomitant insulin therapy. Toxic side-effects or antibodies to IFN-alpha were not observed.

We have treated 10 patients with hairy-cell, or hairy-cell-like leukaemia, for more than 6 months, with alpha interferon 3 X 10(6) IV/day I.M. or subcutaneously. All patients were severely pancytopenic before treatment. 7 patients had a typical hairy-cell leukaemia, whereas 3 lacked hairy cells but had the characteristic bone-marrow infiltration. The therapeutic efficacy of recombinant interferon-alpha (rIFN-alpha) has been evaluated in 7 patients with polycythaemia vera (PV), diagnosed according to the criteria of the Polycythemia Vera Study Group. Six complete responses and one partial response were achieved. Pruritus significantly improved in 80% (4/5) of the cases. Alpha interferons have been used widely to treat chronic hepatitis C virus infection. These include recombinant interferons, purified natural leukocyte, and lymphoblastoid interferons. Systemic mastocytosis (SM) with progressive infiltration of various organs by mast cells is a rare disease with a mean survival of 2 years. So far there is no established therapy. We describe a patient with progressive mastocytosis who had a clinical response to interferon alpha-2b 3 x 5 Mio U s.c. three times a week. The response is stable 3 years after initiation of therapy and includes reduction of abdominal lymphadenopathy, ascites, decrease of serum and urinary histamine levels as well as pulmonary reticulonodular markings.
