Dextran and hydroxyethyl starch interfere with fibrinogen assays.

We studied the haemostatic and volume effects of synthetic plasma substitutes and Ringer's solution in 48 surgical patients and found that the measured fibrinogen concentrations of patients receiving either dextran or hydroxyethyl starch (HES) were significantly higher than those predicted by the dilutional effects. The groups given Ringer's solution showed no apparent disproportion between fibrinogen concentration and plasma volume change. The results suggested that the presence of artificial colloids might interfere with the indirect fibrinogen assay used in the study. The method of analysis

[Chemical potentials of solutes and quantitative structure-activity relationships: study in a series of barbiturates].

The part, displayed by the solvatation of the solute in 2 solvents with witch log P is determined, is studied by 2 indirect process. They consist to test some QSAR where the corresponding chemical potentials are effective but with different weighs than in log P. The results obtained with barbiturics confirm the importance of the couple water/n-octanol and show that taking account of two partitionning process can improve the significativity of the QSAR.

Effect of some simple manoeuvres on the course of acute renal failure after gentamycin treatment in rats.

For a period of 5 days, Wistar rats received Gentamycin (G), 100 mg/kg b.w./day i.m. Three days after the last injection, the rats were sacrificed and the plasma concentrations of urea (PU) and creatinine (PCr) were determined. Both values were significantly higher than in the control rats receiving vehicle only. The increase was substantially greater in females than in males. The rats drinking isotonic NaCl solution instead of water 7 days prior to G showed near normal PU and PCr values; drinking of NaHCO3 had a similar protective effect. Isotonic sucrose solution was without any influence. T

Comparative Efficacy of Preservative vs. Isotonic Fluids in liver transplantation: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the comparative efficacy of preservative solutions versus isotonic fluids in living donor liver transplantation. METHODS: The scoping review was conducted from June 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025, and comprised comprehensive literature search across PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature databases for randomised/non-randomised trials, observational studies and case series comparing preservative solutions and isotonic fluids in living donor liver transplantation cases involving adults that were published in the English

Transport of sodium and secretion of potassium and bicarbonate by the colon of normal and sodium-depleted rats.

1. Ascending and descending colonic segments of normal and Na-depleted rats were perfused in vivo with isotonic solutions of varying Na concentration and the unidirectional Na fluxes and secretion rate of K and bicarbonate and the transmucosal electrical p.d. were measured.2. Potential difference was greater in Na-depleted rats, especially towards the distal end of the descending colon. With reduction of luminal Na concentration, p.d. was reduced.3. The ascending and descending segments were similar in regard to Na transport except that the latter had lower passive permeability. Na depletion c…

The use of frozen intravenous crystalloid solutions as the refrigerant for shipping blood.

The authors studied whether cooled sterile intravenous crystalloid solutions could be used to refrigerate red cells during shipment. Six 1000-ml bags of 0.9 percent normal saline and lactated Ringers (RL) solutions were supercooled and tested separately at temperatures ranging from 1 to -78 degrees C, with either 5 or 30 units of packed red cells (PRBCs). The PRBCs were shipped in a standard military container that permitted separation of the supercooled solutions from the PRBCs. Cooling RL solutions to 6 degrees C and to -22 degrees C maintained acceptable storage temperatures of the PRBC for

Cochlear blood flow and microvascular resistance changes in response to hypertonic glycerol, urea, and mannitol infusions.

The effect of hyperosmotic agents on cochlear blood flow (CBF) was tested in normal guinea pigs and in guinea pigs having prior unilateral operations to ablate the endolymphatic duct. Laser-Doppler-measured CBF was normalized to remove apparent changes related directly to systemic blood pressure. Hyperosmotic fluids were given via venous infusion: glycerol (20% and 40% solutions), urea (10%, 30%, and 40% solutions), and mannitol (40% solution). All agents were dissolved in 0.9% saline and the mixtures were given at a rate of 0.3 to 0.6 mL/min for 5 minutes. Control infusions were of 0.9% salin

Rational Fluid Resuscitation in Sepsis for the Hospitalist: A Narrative Review.

Administration of fluid is a cornerstone of supportive care for sepsis. Current guidelines suggest a protocolized approach to fluid resuscitation in sepsis despite a lack of strong physiological or clinical evidence to support it. Both initial and ongoing fluid resuscitation requires careful consideration, as fluid overload has been shown to be associated with increased risk for mortality. Initial fluid resuscitation should favor balanced crystalloids over isotonic saline, as the former is associated with decreased risk of renal dysfunction. Traditionally selected resuscitation targets, such a

Mean arterial pressure targeted fluid resuscitation may lead to fluid overload: A bleeding-resuscitation animal experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Fluid resuscitation is the cornerstone of treatment in hemorrhagic shock. Despite increasing doubts, several guidelines recommend to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) >65 mmHg as the most frequent indication of fluid therapy. Our aim was to investigate the effects of a MAP-guided management in a bleeding-resuscitation animal experiment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After anesthesia and instrumentation (tbsl) animals were bled till the initial stroke volume index dropped by 50% (t0). Fluid replacement was performed in 4 equivalent steps (t1-4) with balanced crystalloid solution to

Fluid Management in Acute Kidney Injury.

The goal of fluid therapy in critical care medicine is to restore hemodynamic stability and vital organ perfusion while avoiding interstitial edema. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in critically ill patients. Decisions regarding fluid management in critically ill patients with AKI are difficult, as these patients often have accompanying oliguria as well as body fluid overload. Both hypovolemia and volume overload are associated with increased morbidity and mortality in critical care patients; therefore, accurate assessment of the intravascular volume status as well as the re

Fluid resuscitation.

Contention over fluid resuscitation is not new. The issues however have changed considerably. The crystalloid/colloid debate has largely reached a stalemate with little to define clear differences between the two especially early in traumatic shock when increased capillary permeability is a minor issue. Blood, despite its difficulties and its cost is now safer than ever before and we will have to wait a number of years before routine use of blood substitutes becomes possible. Hypertonic saline and hypertonic saline dextran solutions used as an early bolus of 4-6 ml/kg and in conjunction with i
