Keloids grow and do not regress. They are characterised histologically by hyalinised keloidal collagen (HKC). HKC amounts vary, and the mechanism by which they form is unclear. To clarify how HKCs form and whether their formation associates with specific clinical features, we studied the histological findings of earlobe keloids and compared them with respective clinical features. A total of 50 earlobe keloids from 43 patients were used for histological analysis of keloid size (mm2 ), HKC area (mm2 ) and HKC area ratio (%). As a result, keloid durations ranged from 3 months to >13 years. Early-…

Keloids are benign dermal proliferations resulting from excessive fibroblast activity that extends beyond the original site of injury. This study aims to investigate key biomarker genes associated with cell apoptosis and proliferation in the pathogenesis of keloids. Bioinformatic analysis of Gene Expression Omnibus datasets identified 122 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in samples from keloid patients. Following the intersection with apoptosis-related genes (ARGs), three DEGs-ANLN, CLU, and SFRP2-were identified as keloid-associated ARGs. Among these, the expression of CLU was consistent…

Keloids are fibroproliferative skin disorder caused by abnormal healing of injured or irritated skin and are characterized by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and deposition, which results in excessive collagen disorders and calcinosis, increasing the remodeling and stiffness of keloid matrix. The pathogenesis of keloid is very complex, and may include changes in cell function, genetics, inflammation, and other factors. In this review, we aim to discuss the role of biomechanical factors in keloid formation. Mechanical stimulation can lead to excessive proliferation of wound fibro…

UNLABELLED: Keloid formation after syndactyly division is a stressful situation for patients. In our experience, digital enlargement may be involved in keloid formation following syndactyly divisions. Therefore, we aimed to identify predictive factors and reference values for keloid formation.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 11 keloid patients (seven children, four adults) and 11 nonkeloid patients after syndactyly division (control group) with the same sex, age, webspace division site, and operation were enrolled between 2008 and 2020. Using preoperative x-ray images, we compared bony …

Hair transplantation is considered safe compared to other cosmetic procedures. However, scarring is still an inevitable potential complication. Keloid scarring is a rare complication of hair transplantation and usually associated with strip harvesting rather than follicular unit extraction (FUE). A case of keloids at the donor site following FUE hair transplantation is presented. Hair transplant practitioners should be aware of the risks of the procedure when considering hair restoration to ensure safer outcomes.

Keloid scar, dermal benign fibro-proliferative growth that extends outside the original wound and invades adjacent dermal tissue due to extensive production of extracellular matrix, especially collagen, which caused by over expression of cytokines and growth factors. Although many attempts were made to understand the exact pathophysiology and the molecular abnormalities, the pathogenesis of keloid scar is yet to be determined. Even though there are several treatment options for keloid scars include combination of medical and surgical therapies like combination of surgical removal followed by c…

PURPOSE: The foreign body reactions are comprised of macrophages and foreign body giant cells and are considered possible risk factors for recurrence in several conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pathologically proven foreign body reactions on the recurrence of the auricular keloids.
METHODS: This study was carried out in 76 cases in 70 patients reaching the pathologic diagnosis of auricular keloids from March 2006 to February 2012. Patients with auricular keloids were included in the study according to the following criteria: The keloid scar was caused by ea…

The keloid scar is a fibrous skin tumor, intradermal, and exuberant. It is commonly found on the glabrous skin. The keloid of the palms and soles are rare. Small series are reported in English literature. The authors report a case of large keloids located on both palms and soles, within a context of keloid disease, in a man of 37 years. On the left hand, the keloid scar caused a partial syndactyly IV-V. Large keloid tumors occupied the inner edge and, weight-bearing areas of both feet. These tumors rendered wearing of shoes impossible and interfered with walking. The treatment consisted of tot…

We report a case of keloid formation on the palm of the hand after trigger finger release. A 58-year-old male with trigger finger of the right index, middle and ring fingers was treated with open release at a nearby hospital. Three months after this operation, a progressively enlarging skin lesion formed at the surgical site. A diagnosis was made of keloid formation after trigger finger release, and keloid excision with full thickness skin graft and postoperative radiation therapy was done. One year postoperatively, the patient was asymptomatic and had not experienced a recurrence. This is a f…

The keloid scar is a cutaneous mass characterized by nodular fibroblastic proliferation of dermis and a predilection for distinctive anatomical locations. However, keloid extension to neighbouring tissue as a nonsyndromic entity has not been described. In the present report, a case involving a 48-year-old woman with extensive bilateral keloids of the ear lobules and neck following ear piercing is presented.

OBJECTIVE: Keloids occur commonly after trauma to the skin, with ear piercing being a well-known inciting event. We surveyed 32 patients with keloids resulting from ear piercing, to examine a potential relationship between age of piercing and keloid formation.
METHODS: A total of 32 consecutive patients completed a survey about ear-piercing and keloid formation. Fisher's exact test was used for data analysis.
RESULTS: Fifty percent (n = 16) of surveyed patients developed a keloid after their first piercing. Twenty surveyed patients developed keloids with subsequent piercings. Those who had p…

A patient with lepromatous leprosy developed keloids on the dorsum of both arms in response to ulcerations due to acute erythema nodosum leprosum reactions. Electron microscopic examination of the keloidal dermis showed a morphology indicative of increased production of normal collagen fibrils. The greatest cellular changes from normal were in fibroblasts which were enlarged due to increased amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum and extensive Golgi complexes. Nuclear folds were also evident in these fibroblasts. Some cells, considered to be fibroblasts, were filled with cytoplasmic filaments …
