Filamentary keratitis (FK) is a clinical sign of underlying ocular and systemic conditions. FK can cause significant irritation, tearing, and photophobia in the eye. It is a refractory debilitating condition caused by dry eye that affects the day-to-day activities of patients. The etiopathogenesis of FK is not well known; there are numerous predisposing causes. The condition starts as a sub-epithelial or Bowman's membrane dysfunction and leads to the shedding of epithelial cells that take a strand-like form and attach to the cornea. These strands are surrounded by mucin and continue to elongat…

A case of keratitis caused by microsporidia infection was reported. A 57-year-old female patient, without any obvious predisposing cause, presented with eye redness, eye abrasion and vision loss for one year in the left eye. The patient was diagnosed with viral keratitis based on laboratory examinations and clinical symptoms two months ago in our hospital. He was given outpatient treatment for antivirus. Two months later, he was admitted to our hospital with worsened condition that presented with corneal ulcer. After admission, corneal scraping examination was performed for the detection of mi…

PURPOSE: To study the demographic characteristics, predisposing factors, and latest trends of causative organisms and to analyze the prognostic factors of visual outcome in microbial keratitis.
METHODS: A retrospective study of patients diagnosed with microbial keratitis who required hospital admission in the period between January 2018 and December 2020 in Taiping Hospital, Perak, Malaysia.
RESULTS: A total of 75 eyes of 74 patients who were admitted to the hospital were studied. The male to female ratio was 13.8:1. Seventy percent of patients in this study were within the productive age gr…

In recent years, Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) has became a clinically significant problem because of the broad use of contact lenses that are the major risk factor of the disease. The treatment presents considerable difficulties due to similarity of clinical manifestations of AK to other keratites (bacterial, herpetic, and fungal). This often leads to late diagnosis and formation of drug-resistant cysts. There is currently no specific drug universally suitable for monotherapy of AK. Instead, 2 agents (usually chlorhexidine and poligexametilen biguanide) are used that, if combined, are effective…

PURPOSE: We determined the ultrastructure of mouse adenovirus keratitis, a model for human adenovirus keratitis.
METHODS: Adenovirus keratitis was induced in C57Bl/6j mice by intrastromal injection of human adenovirus species D type 37 (HAdV-D37) with a heat-pulled, glass, micropipette needle under compressed air. At select time points after infection, mice were euthanized and their corneas removed, fixed, and sectioned at 70-nm thickness for electron microscopy.
RESULTS: Injection of HAdV-D37 into the mouse corneal stroma placed virus predominantly in the pericellular corneal stromal matrix…

BACKGROUND: Description of the clinical and microbiological spectrum of fungal keratitis at a tertiary eye care hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients with keratitis with positive fungal cultures from corneal or associated samples presenting to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia from July 1996 to May 2004. Demographic data, predisposing factors, features on presentation, management, outcomes and microbiological data were collected and analysed.
RESULTS: The study included 56 eyes of 56 patients. Thirty-five patients were tr…

OBJECTION: To analyse the patient, clinical and microbiological variables associated with poor outcomes from keratitis in patients presenting to a major public hospital in Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective audit of the records of all patients who had a corneal scraping in 5 years at Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane, Australia) was carried out. The outcome of a patient's episode of keratitis was classified as poor if they had final visual acuity of 6/60 or worse; had vision loss during treatment; or a complication of keratitis; or needed surgical intervention.
RESULTS: A final outcome …

PURPOSE: Acanthamoeba keratitis is a potentially blinding microbial disease that has been increasing in incidence during the past two decades. Prognosis of this serious disease had been dismal, but improvement in diagnosis, a better understanding of the natural course of the disease, and recent introduction of multiple and effective therapeutic agents have resulted in improvement of visual outcomes.
METHODS: A review of literature pertaining to Acanthamoeba keratitis.
RESULTS: Contact lens wear and exposure to contaminated water sources remain the most important risk factors; however, in viv…

Report of a case of peripheral keratitis caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. The patient was seen in a referral practice. Corneal scraping was performed on a middle-aged female patient presenting with peripheral keratitis and progressive nasal obstruction that revealed spores suggestive of rhinosporidiosis. The patient was started on topical amphotericin B 0.15% eye drops. Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) examination showed presence of a polypoid lesion in the left nostril for which a polypectomy was performed. Histopathological examination confirmed rhinosporidiosis. Complete resolution of the kerat…

AIM: To describe leprosy characteristics, ocular features, and type of organisms that produce infective corneal ulcers in leprosy patients.
METHOD: The records of all leprosy patients admitted for treatment of corneal ulcers between 1992 and 1997 were reviewed.
RESULTS: 63 leprosy patients, 53 males and 10 females, are described. 16 were tuberculoid and 47 lepromatous. 25 patients had completed multidrug therapy. 10 patients had face patches, eight had type I reaction, and 10 had type II reaction. 43 (68%) patients had hand deformities. In 54% of patients pain was absent as a presenting symp

Patients with corneal ulcer, residing mainly in rural areas of Paraguay, were controlled for mycotic eye infections. In 26 cases out of 45 (58%) presence of filamentous fungi was observed (Fusarium sp. (11), Aspergillus sp. (5), Cladosporium sp. (3), Alternaria sp. (2), Acremonium sp. (1), Curvularia sp. (1), culture negative (3)). In 17 cases also pathogenic bacteria were present. Most of the patients were farmers and belonged to the low income class. These data indicate that mycotic keratitis may be a frequent cause for eye infections in developing countries.
