[Percutaneous extraction of renal lithiasis without radiological assistance].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the utility of posterior lumbotomy with a 3-4 cm incision through which the finger is inserted to palpate the kidney and perform percutaneous nephrolithotomy when radiological guidance is not available. METHODS: 24 selected patients underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Stone size ranged from 1-4 cm. The calculi were located in the renal pelvis (17 cases), lower calyx (6 cases), inferior pyelocalyceal level (2 cases) inferior and mid-calyceal level (1 case). RESULTS: Calculi less than 1.5 cm were completely removed and ultrasonic lithotripsy and stone extraction with

Ureteroscopy in pregnant women for ureteral stone.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of urolithiasis in pregnancy represents a challenge in both diagnosis and treatment of this condition, because it presents risks not only to the mother but also to the fetus. Surgical treatment may be indicated for patients with infection, persistent pain, and obstruction of a solitary kidney. We present our experience on the management of pregnant patients with ureteral calculi and a review of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The charts of 19 pregnant patients with obstructive ureteral calculi were retrospectively reviewed. Gestational age ranged from 13 to

Spontaneous rupture of the renal pelvis caused by upper urinary tract obstruction: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Spontaneous renal rupture is rupture of the renal parenchyma, collecting system, or renal blood vessel, which often occurs in pathological kidney and is clinically less common. Postoperative long-term renal rupture is rarely reported in flexible ureteroscopy treatment of calculus in the upper urinary tract. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 58-year-old man complained of right lower abdominal pain with hematuria for 3 hours after flexible ureteroscopy, combined with holmium laser lithotripsy of right renal calculi was performed 1 month ago. The urinary B-mode ultrasonogram suggested calculi and d

Relationship between Serum Selenium Level and Self-Reported History of Kidney Stone.

A relationship may exist between selenium and kidney calculi, but there is a lack of research in this field at present. Our study explored the relationship between the serum selenium level and a medical history of adult kidney calculi. We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2011 and 2016. Participants self-reported their history of kidney stones, while serum selenium levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry. Our findings indicate a negative correlation between serum selenium levels and th…

US and CT findings of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.

Ultrasonographic and computed tomographic findings of 21 cases of pathologically proven xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) in 20 patients were retrospectively evaluated. Seventeen (81%) were diffuse, and extrarenal extension occurred in 13 cases (62%). The kidney was enlarged diffusely in 12 cases (57%), and focally in 3 (14%). Urinary calculi were present in 16 cases (76%), with staghorn calculi in 4 of these, and hydronephrosis occurred in 17 (81%). In addition to typical features of XGP, the condition may also show variable imaging findings.

Crystalline composition of equine urinary calculi.

X-ray diffraction crystallography was used to determine the crystalline composition of 18 equine urinary calculi, including stones originating in the kidney, bladder and urethra. Calcium carbonate in the form of calcite was found to be the major component in all calculi examined. Other components commonly found included weddellite and substituted vaterite. Urine deposits from a number of normal horses were also examined. The significance of these findings, as well as those from a number of previous reports, are discussed in relation to the possible aetiology of urolithiasis in the horse.

Surgery of urinary calculi in perspective.

Technical developments have stimulated an international interest in the dissolution of kidney stones without conventional surgery. Such techniques and instruments include real-time or manipulative imaging; the transmission and focusing of energy through body tissue by conduits or pulsation; and the instrumentation for percutaneous visual and manipulative entry into the renal pelvis. Proper assessment of these new approaches to the removal of calculi will require extensive data collected over several decades. This review sets some bench marks for the current state of the art of intrarenal surge

Hematuria as a Sign of Kidney Stone Disease Evaluated Using Computed Tomography: A Review.

Kidney stone is a common cause of acute pain in the abdomen in patients presenting to casualty. Being present in roughly 12% of the world's population makes it the most prevalent pathology of the urinary system. The ureters, kidneys, and bladder frequently develop calculi, resulting in hematuria. The most effective imaging technique for evaluating calculi is unenhanced helical computed tomography. The population, intervention, control, and outcomes (PICO)-formatted question was used to generate methodological medical subject heading (MeSH) phrases, which increased the search strategy's sensiti

Ex vivo renal perfusion and autotransplantation in treatment of calculous disease or abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Two more indications are described for temporary ex vivo perfusion of kidneys with revascularization of these organs as autografts to orthotopic or heterotopic locations. One of the patients had staghorn calculi which were removed from a solitary kidney. The other patient had both kidneys autografted in the course of a surgical procedure on an extensive abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Do dental calculi predict the presence of renal stones?

OBJECTIVE: Pathological calcifications that occur in various parts of the body may cause stone formation over time. The structure of these stones is similar in many regions of the body. We have studied the relationship between dental calculi and kidney stones. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 183 patients with dental stone complaints or dental calculi were included between April and August 2016 in the Cagri Dental Hospital, Elazig, Turkey. Patients were evaluated with regard to a urinary tract ultrasonography, urinalysis, oral hygiene, and stone and surgical disease history. All information w

Calcified renal stones and cyst calcifications in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: clinical and CT study in 84 patients.

Although renal calculi and cyst calcifications occur commonly in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), their true frequency is unknown because it is difficult to distinguish between the two with excretory urography and sonography. A detailed analysis of renal calcifications in ADPKD based on CT findings has not been performed. Accordingly, we retrospectively evaluated clinical and CT findings in 84 patients with ADPKD to determine the frequency of calculi and cyst calcifications, the relationship of these abnormalities to symptoms, and possible factors in their pa

[Treatment of kidney lithiasis with extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy in horseshoe kidney].

Following a brief overview of the general features of the horseshoe kidney, we report on ten patients diagnosed as having this anomaly and renal calculi. One patient had bilateral renal calculi. The clinical cases are described and treatment with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL1) and its advantages and disadvantages relative to other treatment modalities (PCN, open surgery) are discussed. Although we do not advocate the use of a single therapeutic approach, our results show the usefulness of ESWL1 in the treatment of this frequently recurring condition.

Studies on serum mucoproteins in patients with urinary calculi.

A significant increase in serum mucoproteins in stone patients has been observed previously. The present study describes the variation of the constituents of mucoproteins obtained on hydrolysis. The serum mucoproteins of 31 patients with urinary calculi (13 with kidney stone, 7 with bladder stone and 11 with stones in other sites) were analysed and compared with that of 15 healthy control subjects, who had no personal or family history of calculi. The mucoproteins, glycosylated serum proteins, hexosamine and sialic acid were increased in all patients irrespective of the site of stone, while ur

Construction of a novel rabbit model of ureteral calculi implanted with flowable resin.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to characterize the pathophysiological changes of hydronephrosis caused by ureteral calculi obstruction in a new rabbit ureteral calculi model by implanting flowable resin. METHODS: Forty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: the calculi group and the sham control group. In the calculi group (n = 20), rabbits were operated at left lower abdomen and the left ureter was exposed. Then flowable resin (flowable restorative dental materials) was injected into the left ureter using a 0.45 mm diameter intravenous infusion needle. Then lig
