In an attempt to determine whether lead (Pb) in striated muscle can be taken up by motor axon, mice were injected intramuscularly with a 5% Pb nitrate solution, and the passage of Pb through the tissues was traced with electron microscopy. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 42-year-old Italian woman with a known beta-thalassaemia trait presented with a two-year history of disabling pains and symptomatic anaemia, which were found to be caused by lead poisoning.

We measured lead and calcium in multiple bone biopsies from 11 cadavers without known excessive past exposure to lead. Paired iliac crest, transiliac and tibial bone biopsies from these cadavers indicated that in bone biopsy specimens the lead/calcium ratio is more reproducible than the absolute lead concentration. To examine patterns of death in lead smelter workers, a retrospective analysis of mortality was conducted in a cohort of 1,987 males employed between 1940 and 1965 at a primary lead smelter in Idaho. A patient with a retained bullet developed lead poisoning in association with thyrotoxicosis. The clinical and laboratory data suggest that lead was mobilized from an increased mobile bone pool during the hypermetabolic period with resultant poisoning. The findings give factual support to earlier concepts that lead poisoning may occur during periods of metabolic change in an individual with an increased body lead burden.

Seven Florida sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pratensis) and 6 greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) were exposed to lead-base paint containing 27% lead. Lead chromate was investigated for its carcinogenic potential in both rats and mice. Results show that this compound is a very potent carcinogen in rats when administered i.m. Sixty-four % of the animals treated developed malignant tumors at the injection site. Three renal carcinomas were also found after i.m. treatment with lead chromate.
