Leech therapy in the management of acute venous congestion of an infant's lower limb.

We report the successful use of leech therapy in the postsurgical management of an infant with acute venous congestion of an entire lower limb. Two days of constant leech therapy, followed by 5 days of intermittent application, decongested the affected tissues. There were no complications related to the leech therapy, and mild cutaneous hyperpigmentation was the only long-term complication of the acute venous congestion. The volume of the affected tissue may limit the success of leech therapy in cases of acute venous congestion in the limbs of adults. Nevertheless, the use of leeches to manage…

Intracellular acidification of the leech giant glial cell evoked by glutamate and aspartate.

Glutamate is an excitatory receptor agonist in both neurones and glial cells, and, in addition, glutamate is also a substrate for glutamate transporter in glial cells. We have measured intracellular and extracellular pH changes induced by bath application of glutamate, its receptor agonist kainate, and its transporter agonist aspartate, in the giant neuropile glial cell in the central nervous system of the leech Hirudo medicinalis, using double-barrelled pH-sensitive microelectrodes. The giant glial cells responded to glutamate and aspartate (100-500 microM), and kainate (5-20 microM) with a m

Evidence for glial control of extracellular pH in the leech central nervous system.

Double-barrelled pH-sensitive microelectrodes were used to measure the intracellular pH (pHi) of neuropil glial cells and the pH of extracellular spaces (pH(e)) within isolated, intact ganglia of the leech Hirudo medicinalis. By application of a weak acid (propionate, 40 mM) or a weak base (ammonium, 20 mM) the total buffer capacity was estimated by changes in glial pHi and in pH(e). The buffering power of glial cells and in the extracellular spaces was increased by up to threefold in the presence of CO2/bicarbonate. The anion exchange inhibitor 4,4-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulphonic ac

The role of the sexual organs in the generation of postembryonic neurons in the leech Hirudo medicinalis.

In adult Hirudo medicinalis, the segmental ganglia (SG) of the fifth and sixth body segments contain a few hundred more cells than the other segmental ganglia of the body (Macagno, 1980). These ganglia innervate the sex organs and are known as the sex SG. As shown here, these cells are stained by neuron-specific antibodies. Cell counts at several developmental stages reveal that the extra cells are added exclusively to the sex SG, and that this addition occurs gradually and almost entirely postembryonically (embryogenesis ends at 30 days of development). Hence, we refer to them as PE cells. Un

Barbiturates block divalent cation action potentials in leech nociceptive cells.

Phenobarbital (PNB), pentobarbital (PTB) and methohexital (MTX) decreased the maximum rate of depolarization Vmax and duration of divalent cation action potentials elicited in leech nociceptive neurons in Na+-free solutions containing the K+-channel blocker TEA, without significantly affecting resting membrane potential or conductance. The block of the divalent cation action potentials was reversible and dose-dependent, ED50 for inhibition of Vmax being 560 microM for MTX, 800 microM for PTB and 3000 microM for PNB. This order of potency correlated well with the ratio of unchanged/charged form

Production and characterization of gigastasin, a leech-derived inhibitor of complement and coagulation pathways.

The complement and coagulation systems protect against injury and infection, but ill-controlled activation may cause clinical complications. Despite their efficacy in defined indications, approved complement and coagulation inhibitors remain poorly effective in complex thromboinflammatory disorders. Given their ability to broadly impair host defense, parasitic inhibitors provide a promising therapeutic avenue. Gigastasin from the giant Amazon leech was identified as complement initiation inhibitor, but its structural complexity hitherto hampered large-scale production. Here, we report high-yie

An enhanced blood-sucking leech optimization for training feedforward neural networks.

The input, hidden and output layers cultivate a hierarchical framework of the feedforward neural networks (FNNs) characterized by unidirectional information flow and feedback feedback-free loop connection, the network highlights attributes of fortified scalability and adaptability, elevated parallel computation and training efficiency, uncluttered structure and easy implementation. The blood-sucking leech optimization (BSLO) is predicated on the foraging patterns of blood-sucking leeches in rice paddies, which incorporates exploration, exploitation, switching mechanism of directional leeches, …

Phlegmasia cerulea dolens of the upper extremity treated with anticoagulation and leech therapy.

Phlegmasia cerulea dolens is a serious manifestation of venous thrombosis that has a high risk of morbidity and mortality. If not promptly treated on presentation, progressive extremity ischemia and potential gangrene can lead to emergency amputation of the affected limb. Most commonly, the lower extremities are affected, and reports of upper extremity phlegmasia are scarce. We report the successful treatment of phlegmasia cerulea dolens of the distal upper extremity using leech therapy combined with anticoagulation.

An unusual cause of severe dyspnea: A laryngeal live leech: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the upper airways are one of the most challenging otolaryngology emergencies, leeches present a very rare cause of airway foreign bodies around the world. CASE REPORT: A 6-year-old girl was referred to our otolaryngology department at a tertiary university hospital with a severe dyspnea and hemoptysis. Nasofibroscopy revealed a dark living leech in the supraglottic area which extends to the glottis. The patient was urgently admitted to the operating room, the leech was grasped and removed with a foreign body forceps with a full length of more than 6cm. All symp…

Oral infestation with leech Limnatis nilotica in two mixed-breed dogs.

Leeches are bloodsucking hermaphroditic parasites that attach to tissues using two muscular suckers, ingest large amounts of blood and may cause severe anaemia in the host. Two four-month-old mixed-breed dogs (one bitch and one male) were referred with anorexia, retching, hypersalivation and bleeding from the oral cavity. On physical examination, two live leeches were detected on the ventral aspect of the tongue of the bitch and one in a similar position in the male. The leeches were gently detached and removed using Adson tissue forceps after applying vinegar over the area. Microcytic hypochr…

Nasopharyngeal bleeding due to leech bites in a 9-month-old infant.

Leeches are annelids, comprising the subclass Hirudinea. There are freshwater, terrestrial and marine leeches. Haemophagic leeches attach to their hosts and remain there until they become filled up with blood and then they fall off to digest. Leech bites can manifest various symptoms, which lead to anemia. Here is reported, a case of leech bites in a 9-month-old infant, with a long history of hematemesis, melena, epistaxis and anemia which demanded repeated transfusions. So, leech bites may be a differential diagnosis of anemia particularly in the endemic rural areas where villagers use non bo…
