Factors affecting entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernematidae) for control of overwintering codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in fruit bins.

Fruit bins infested with diapausing codling moth larvae, Cydia pomonella (L.), are a potential source of reinfestation of orchards and may jeopardize the success of mating disruption programs and other control strategies. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) were tested as a potential means of control that could be applied at the time bins are submerged in dump tanks. Diapausing cocooned codling moth larvae in miniature fruit bins were highly susceptible to infective juveniles (IJs) of Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) and Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) in a series of experiments. Cocooned larvae

Characterization of abamectin resistance in Grapholita molesta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae): cross-resistance, inheritance, fitness costs, and biochemical mechanisms.

The oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a globally significant pest of fruit crops. Its management has long relied on abamectin, yet resistance evolution threatens its effectiveness. In this study, a laboratory relative susceptible strain (AM-S) was subjected to 19 consecutive generations of selection with abamectin, resulting in a resistant strain (AM-R) showing a 132.5-fold increase in LD50. The AM-R strain displayed significant cross-resistance to emamectin benzoate (43.8-fold), imidacloprid (16.5-fold), but little to no cross-resistance to lambda-…

Depleting SfCarE: Innovative strategies for enhancing chlorantraniliprole toxicity through mixing with carbaryl in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The sustained application of insecticides has led to the development of resistance. Carboxylesterases (CarEs) play important roles in the resistance and synergism of chlorantraniliprole and carbaryl. In this study, the key Spodoptera frugiperda CarEs gene, SfCarE, was identified. SfCarE was highly expressed at the 4th instar and in the midgut of the 6th instar larvae. Knockdown of SfCarE resulted in significant decrease in CarE activity and an increase in susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole, as well as to the mixture of chlorantraniliprole and carbaryl. Metabolic assays demonstrated that the

VOC Characterization of Byasa hedistus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) and Its Visual and Olfactory Responses during Foraging and Courtship.

Color and odor are crucial cues for butterflies during foraging and courtship. While most sexual dimorphic butterflies rely more on vision, our understanding of how butterflies with similar coloration use different signals remains limited. This study investigated the visual and olfactory behavioral responses of the similarly colored butterfly Byasa hedistus during foraging and courtship. While visiting artificial flowers of different colors, we found that B. hedistus exhibits an innate color preference, with a sequence of preferences for red, purple, and blue. The frequency of flower visits by

Expression profile and functional characterization of odorant binding proteins in a forest pest, Dioryctria abietella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

In the forest ecosystem dominated by the Pinaceae plants, this boring pest Dioryctria abietella is subject to a variety of odorants derived from host and nonhost plants, in which olfactory-related proteins enriched in antennae are key behavioral modulators for the orientation of feeding and ovipositing hosts. Here, we addressed the odorant binding protein (OBP) gene family in D. abietella. Expression profiles revealed that the majority of OBPs were abundantly expressed in the antennae at a female-biased level. A male-antenna-biased DabiPBP1 was a strong candidate for detecting type I and type

Unsaturated Cuticular Hydrocarbon Components of the Sex Pheromone of Eggplant Fruit Borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Leucinodes orbonalis is one of the most damaging insect pests affecting eggplant in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. While (E)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (E11-16:OAc) and its alcohol, (E)-11-hexadecenol (E11-16:OH), have been identified as major and minor sex pheromone components, respectively, few males were attracted to a blend of these compounds in Vietnamese fields. In order to utilize synthetic pheromone of L. orbonalis as a tool for sustainable pest management programs, we reexamined the pheromone of this species in order to search for other minor components. Mexican rice borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) injury to corn greater than to sorghum and sugarcane under field conditions.

The Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is the key pest of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in Texas; it can attack several grassy crop and noncrop host plants and has spread into Louisiana. Through small-plot, commercial field, and pheromone trap experiments, this study demonstrates that the pest uses corn, Zea mays L., more than sugarcane and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, but when corn is harvested in late summer, injury to nearby sugarcane strongly increases during the next approximately equal to 2 mo to harvest. Corn was more infested than sugarcane and s…

Factors affecting the infestation status of African sugarcane stalk borer (Eldana saccharina Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Tanzania.

Sugarcane is an important crop that contributes substantially to sugar production globally and across Sub-Saharan Africa. However, its productivity is constrained by stem borer infestations, particularly Eldana saccharina. The pest reduces sugarcane yield by up to 30% and about 18% of sucrose content is compromised. Nonetheless, the influence of ecological parameters on its pest status in Tanzania remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the influence of season, altitude, crop age, and sugarcane variety on E. saccharina infestation in Tanzania. A stratified multistage cross-sectional su

An Annotated Checklist of Newly Recorded Macromoth Species (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) with Host Plant Records from Peninsular Malaysia.

Numerous studies on moth diversity have been conducted in Borneo, Sumatra, and Thailand. However, research on species richness and distribution in the neighbouring region of Peninsular Malaysia remains relatively limited. This paper analyses two collections, primarily of macromoths collected (i) in the late 1960s to early 1970s by the late H F O'B Traill at Batang Berjuntai, Selangor and (ii) by H S Barlow as well as latterly by Sofwan Badrud'din and Khalid Fadil at Genting Tea Estate (GTE), Genting Sempah, Pahang, from 1971 to date. A new trasandean species of the genus Tigridania Kaye, 1918 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae: Arctiini: Euchromiina) from Colombia.

During curatorial work at the Entomological Collection of the Universidad de Antioquia (Medellín, Colombia), we discovered a recently collected pair of Euchromiina in copula (Fig. 1B) in the department of Antioquia, Colombia (Fig. 1A). It was a large and robust species, with translucent wings and a striking yellow and red abdomen. This species resembled Autochloris thyestes Druce, 1883, described from Ecuador, but certain details and characteristics suggested a more complex situation. After reviewing recent literature, we found the revision of the genus Tigridania Kaye, 1918 by Grados & Ramíre

Sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., is a major food crop in developing countries and is considered essential for the food security of low-income populations. Among the factors limiting its production is the pest Bedellia somnulentella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Bedelliidae), recently recorded in Brazil, and for which no chemical control methods are available. Therefore, understanding the physiological changes caused by this pest attack is important to support management strategies. The objective was to evaluate chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters in eleven sweet potato genotypes subjected o…

Monitoring insecticide resistance and target-site mutations in field populations of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in China.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a notorious invasive pest, has been widely monitored for insecticide resistance. Since its invasion of China in late 2018, early to mid-stage monitoring of resistance is particularly crucial to inform effective control strategies. Resistance ratios (RRs) derived from bioassays offer valuable insights into the overall resistance levels of field populations, while the detection of resistance allele frequencies helps uncover the potential causes of resistance variation. In this study, we established a baseline of susc…
