Neuro-linguistic programming for postoperative pain management: A randomized controlled trial.

Effective control of pain after cesarean delivery is essential, as poorly managed postoperative pain is a common complication that can impair maternal recovery and early infant care. This prospective, randomized, single-blind controlled trial, conducted in the postpartum unit of Kocaeli University Hospital, Kocaeli, Türkiye, between March 2021 and June 2022, compared the effect of a single neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) session added to standard postoperative care against standard care alone. Seventy-six consenting women were randomized in equal numbers to the intervention (standard care p

The facilitating effect of Chinese character linguistic knowledge on working memory updating.

Information representations in working memory (WM) decay rapidly over time. Although phonological rehearsal partially compensates for this decay of memory traces, the extent to which WM updating benefits from linguistic knowledge and whether this benefit is independent of phonological rehearsal strategies remains unclear. This study addressed this question using two progressive experiments. Experiment 1 employed a verbal N-back task (1-back and 2-back) to compare WM updating performance between real and pseudo-characters. Results showed that real characters elicited significantly shorter react

Linguistic and communicative profile of children with Dravet Syndrome: A descriptive case series.

INTRODUCTION: Dravet Syndrome (DS) is a severe early-onset epileptic encephalopathy associated with mutations in the alpha-1 sodium channel of the SCN1A gene. It is characterized by pharmacoresistant seizures and progressive deterioration in motor, cognitive, and communicative areas. Studies have shown significant alterations in language development, particularly in expressive language. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive case study was conducted. The sample consisted of six Spanish-speaking children with DS, aged 2 years 9 months to 6 years 5 months, one of whom had a comorbid diagnosis of autism spe

Grammatical number as linguistic quantity: spatial-response compatibility effects in Turkish.

A growing body of research suggests that numerical magnitude is associated with spatial response coding, as demonstrated by the Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect. Recent work has extended this question beyond Arabic digits to linguistic expressions of quantity, including grammatical number. The present study examined whether Turkish singular and plural word forms show spatial-response patterns compatible with SNARC-like mappings. Eighty-six native speakers of Turkish completed a combined Go/No-Go lexical decision and grammatical number judgment task. Participants r

The include network: Advancing cross-linguistic equity in brain health research.

Speech and language measures are increasingly recognized as sensitive, scalable, non-invasive markers of diverse brain disorders. Yet, current research is overwhelmingly English-centric, neglecting the world's vast linguistic diversity and undermining these markers' global applicability. Here we present the International Network for Cross-Linguistic Research on Brain Health (Include), a multicentric initiative created to address this gap (https://include-network.com/). First, we review the network's origins, mission, and organizational structure. Then, we summarize key milestones achieved duri

[Features of reference choice in the linguistic analysis of speech in the schizophrenia spectrum disorders].

OBJECTIVE: To identify errors of reference choice associated with the incorrect use of reference means for the linguistic analysis of the speech in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 53 male patients, with a mean age of 18.5±2.3 years: Group 1 with schizotypal disorder (F21) (n=33, 62.3%); Group 2 with schizophrenia (F20) (n=20, 37.7%). The control group included mentally healthy high school students and university students (n=33). The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) were used. T

Linguistic information may compensate for age-related decline in attentional filtering.

As we age, understanding speech in social situations imposes an increasingly difficult challenge to the auditory system. However, the attentional mechanisms underlying age-related speech comprehension difficulties in multitalker situations remain unclear. We collected EEG signals while 63 normal hearing participants (35 women) from 19 to 71 years performed a speech comprehension task involving a multitalker paradigm at individually adjusted target-to-distractor ratios. Combining trial-resolved multivariate temporal response function modeling with detailed behavioral comprehension responses, we

Resisting medical frameworks: deaf identity as cultural-linguistic minority in Turkey.

This study examines Turkish Deaf adults' identity construction through interpretative phenomenological analysis. Seven Deaf parents (mean age = 59.14; 3 women, 4 men) with hearing children participated in semi-structured interviews conducted in Turkish Sign Language. Drawing on Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, the findings show that participants construct identity through a tripartite social categorization: Deaf people (sign language users), hearing individuals, and those using medical devices. Participants reject disability labels and position themselves as cultural-ling

Role of science fiction in conceptualising the reproductive future: a linguistic and literary perspective.

In this paper, we explore how members of the public invoke science fiction tropes and references in response to the topic of complete ectogenesis (where the entire development of a fetus takes place outside of the human body in an artificial womb environment) and, to a lesser extent, genome editing. This paper addresses a critical research gap as fiction is central to how the public make sense of new technologies. This research is timely, as human clinical trials of artificial placenta and womb technology are expected to start within the next few years. We argue that gauging public opinion on

Social Decision Preferences for Close Others Are Embedded in Neural and Linguistic Representations.

Humans frequently make decisions that impact close others. Prior research has shown that people have stable preferences regarding such decisions and maintain rich, nuanced mental representations of their close social partners. Yet, if and how such mental representations shape social decisions preferences remains to be seen. Using a combination of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and natural language processing, this study investigated how neural and linguistic representations of close others relate to social decision-making. After nominating a parent and friend, male and female par

Effects of Long-Term Institutionalization on the Linguistic-Communicative Performance of Patients with Schizophrenia.

Background/Objectives: This study examines the impact of long-term institutionalization on the linguistic and communicative abilities of people diagnosed with schizophrenia, focusing on the influence of educational background. Schizophrenia is characterized by cognitive and social deficits, including disruptions to language use and communicative engagement. Prolonged institutionalization can exacerbate these impairments by depriving individuals of essential social interactions and cognitive stimulation. Methods: A case series approach was employed with 18 participants, and validated assessment

Objective Linguistic Markers Associated with Callous-Unemotional Traits in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with interpersonal difficulties and risk for severe conduct problems (CP). The ability to communicate thoughts and feelings is critical to social success, with language a promising treatment target. However, no prior studies have examined objective linguistic correlates of childhood CU traits in early childhood, which could give insight into underlying risk mechanisms and novel target treatments. METHODS: We computed lexical (positive emotion, sad, and anger words) and conversational (interruptions and speech rate) markers produced by

Linguistic validation of a questionnaire for the screening of OSAS in a paediatric population with Down Syndrome.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a common clinical condition in which the throat narrows or collapses repeatedly during sleep, causing obstructive sleep apnoea events. This disorder is present in the paediatric population with a prevalence estimated between 1.2% and 5.8%. Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal alteration associated with mental disability and characterised by other clinical manifestations, and its incidence is estimated at 1/800 births worldwide. Most of the craniofacial features typical of DS represent a risk factor for the development of OSAS. Routi

Acoustic and Linguistic Features of Impromptu Speech and Their Association With Anxiety: Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: The measurement and monitoring of generalized anxiety disorder requires frequent interaction with psychiatrists or psychologists. Access to mental health professionals is often difficult because of high costs or insufficient availability. The ability to assess generalized anxiety disorder passively and at frequent intervals could be a useful complement to conventional treatment and help with relapse monitoring. Prior work suggests that higher anxiety levels are associated with features of human speech. As such, monitoring speech using personal smartphones or other wearable devices
