Rare case of metastatic liposarcoma to the thyroid gland and a review of the literature of metastatic sarcomas to the thyroid.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcomas are the second most common type of soft tissue sarcomas. Typically, myxoid liposarcomas have a metastatic rate of 10%, usually involving the retroperitoneal space, abdomen, and spine. Metastasis to the thyroid is extremely rare. DESIGN/METHOD: A 62-year-old male with a history of metastatic myxoid liposarcoma in his right thigh presented to our clinic for evaluation of a thyroid nodule incidentally identified on a CT scan. A subsequent FNA biopsy was suggestive of a metastatic liposarcoma. RESULTS: The patient underwent a left thyroid lobectomy and final pathology co

Patterns of recurrence in extremity liposarcoma: implications for staging and follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is one of the most common histologic types of soft tissue sarcoma and presents a wide spectrum of clinical behavior. The authors examined the correlation among histologic subtypes, outcomes, and patterns of recurrence among patients with extremity liposarcomas. METHODS. A retrospective review of all patients with intermediate and high grade extremity liposarcoma referred to the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center from January 1, 1980, to December 31, 1992, was performed. Data on clinical presentation, treatment, patterns of treatment failure, and outcome we

Primary mediastinal liposarcoma: clinicopathologic analysis of 24 cases.

Liposarcomas are rare in the mediastinum. Here, we report the clinicopathologic features of 24 cases of mediastinal liposarcoma. Patients included 13 males and 11 females, with an age range of 3 to 72 years (median 58). Nine tumors were located in the anterior mediastinum, 7 in the posterior mediastinum, 1 in the superior mediastinum, and the precise location was not specified in 7 cases. Of the anterior mediastinal tumors, 3 appeared to arise from the thymus. Tumors were well-circumscribed, multinodular masses and ranged in size from 2.2 to 61 cm in greatest dimension (median 16 cm). Histolog

Liposarcoma. A clinicopathologic subtyping of 52 cases.

Fifty-two cases of liposarcoma were analyzed clinicopathologically, and were grouped into the following five types: myxoid (28 cases), well-differentiated (14 cases), pleomorphic (4 cases), round-cell (3 cases), and mixed (3 cases). Three of the 28 myxoid tumors showed a pleomorphic pattern resembling that of the myxoid variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and one of the 3 round-cell tumors was considered to be a malignant counterpart of hibernoma. Ages ranged from 22 to 86 years with the average age of 49 years, the average patients with myxoid or round-cell liposarcoma being over 10 ye

Giant lesser sac liposarcoma mimicking infected pancreatic pseudocyst.

The most common site for abdominal liposarcoma is the retroperitoneum. We report a 32-year-old man with lesser-sac myxoid liposarcoma with extensive cystic degeneration. Cystogastrostomy was attempted elsewhere with a misdiagnosis of pancreatic pseudocyst. However, the procedure was abandoned after biopsy, which showed features of liposarcoma. The patient was re-explored at our institute 2 weeks later. Complete excision of the tumor was done. Histology revealed features of myxoid liposarcoma. The patient received adjuvant radiotherapy and is doing well 12 months later.

Liposarcomas of the mediastinum.

Liposarcoma is a malignant tumor of adipocytic differentiation that rarely arises within the mediastinum. Most of the existing data available comes from scattered case reports and a few small series. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes four basic types of liposarcoma: well-differentiated/atypical lipomatous tumor (ALT), dedifferentiated, myxoid and pleomorphic liposarcoma (PLS). All of these liposarcoma subtypes have been recorded to occur within the mediastinum. On morphologic grounds liposarcoma can present a challenge for diagnosis as it can be difficult to distinguish from benig

Giant metastatic cardiac and abdominal liposarcomas causing hemodynamic deterioration.

Myxoid liposarcoma usually develops in the retroperitoneum or deep soft tissues of extremities. Synchronous cardiac and abdominal metastases are extremely rare. We describe the case of a 63-year-old man, with a history of a thigh liposarcoma, treated by resection, chemotherapy and postoperative radiotherapy 13 years ago. Patient now presented with an intracardial, a pericardial and an abdominal mass, identified as metastatic myxoid liposarcomas. He eventually underwent successful emergency sternotomy and subsequent laparotomy for tumor resection.

Atypical and malignant neoplasms showing lipomatous differentiation. A study of 111 cases.

One-hundred-eleven cases of histopathologically atypical or malignant lipomatous lesions in the somatic soft tissue and retroperitoneum were studied. These consisted of 48 differentiated fatty neoplasms of the somatic soft tissues (DFT-S), 21 fatty neoplasms of the retroperitoneum (DFT-R), 33 myxoid liposarcomas from various sites and nine pleomorphic liposarcomas. DFT-S were defined as lipomatous lesions composed of mature fat and containing atypical stromal cells or lipoblasts. In the somatic soft tissues, this group included lesions that would be classified using published criteria as "atyp

Recurrent giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma: A case report.

RATIONALE: This report describes an exceptionally large recurrent tumor with a long-standing and recurrent clinical course, thereby adding to the limited literature on giant myxoid liposarcoma. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old male with a 13-year history of recurrent liposarcoma presented with progressive abdominal distension and marked abdominal enlargement over 4 months. Imaging demonstrated a massive abdominopelvic mass measuring 352 mm in maximum diameter. DIAGNOSES: Histopathological examinations from multiple prior resections had consistently confirmed recurrent myxoid liposarcoma. INT

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma: MR characteristics and pathological correlative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is the most common primary retroperitoneal malignant neoplasm. However, preoperative diagnosis is a common problem due to lack of characteristic clinical presentations. It has been assumed that MRI, based on its high soft-tissue resolution, could discover and discern different subtypes of this tumor. Moreover, there has been little in the literature to compare the MRI features with pathological appearances of the retroperitoneal liposarcomas. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 19 cases of retroperitoneal liposarcoma (11 males and 8 females, aged 41-79 years) proved s

[Orbital metastasis of liposarcoma].

INTRODUCTION: Liposarcoma, the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults, rarely involves the orbit. Primary orbital liposarcomas are extremely rare, with less than 30 cases previously reported. Metastatic orbital liposarcomas are also extremely rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. We report a new case of an orbital metastatic liposarcoma and review the literature. OBSERVATION: A 57-year-old man with a history 5 years before of myxoid liposarcoma on the right calf, completely surgically resected, was admitted for recent proptosis of the left eye. Liposarcomas of the posterior mediastinum: clinicopathologic study of 18 cases.

Sarcomas of the posterior mediastinum are rare and correspond mostly to neurogenic tumors. We studied 18 cases of liposarcoma presenting in the posterior mediastinum; because of their unusual location, some of these tumors posed difficulties for diagnosis. There were 11 men and 7 women aged 29-87 years (mean: 57). The tumors were large lobulated masses ranging from 6 to 30 cm in greatest diameter (median: 15 cm). Symptoms included cough, dysphagia, and chest pain. Four patients were asymptomatic and the tumors were discovered incidentally on chest X-rays. Histologically, 10/18 (55%) cases were

Lipomatous tumours of soft tissues: an update.

This review summarizes the clinicopathological features of recently characterized variants of lipomatous tumours of soft tissue, attempts to deal with some difficult conceptual issues relating to adipocytic neoplasms and aims to provide an update on cytogenetic aspects of fatty tumours. Myolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm, occurring most frequently in adults in the deep soft tissue of the abdomen or retroperitoneum, and is composed of irregularly admixed mature adipose and smooth muscle tissues. Chondroid lipoma represents an unusual benign lesion occurring mainly in adult females subcutaneous

[Multicentric liposarcoma. Apropos of a case].

INTRODUCTION: Though rare, observations of multiple liposarcomas show that the development of secondary tumors occur in sites usually considered as primary locations. This would be more frequent for myxoid liposarcomas than for other subtypes of the disease. Their origin, either multicentric (i.e., coexistence of several primary tumors) or due to metastatic spreading, is still debated. EXEGESIS: We report a case of myxoid-type multicentric (i.e., right popliteal fossa, retroperitoneum and soft tissue of the left arm) liposarcomas of different sizes, without pulmonary, hepatic or osseous invol

Giant spermatic cord liposarcoma.

We report a case of giant spermatic cord liposarcoma (SCL) in an 81-year-old patient, presenting with a huge scrotal mass that reached up to the knee joint. SCL is a rare tumor, and about 200 cases have been reported in the literature so far. Although 20% of liposarcomas arise in the retroperitoneum, only 0.1% present as incidental inguinal hernias. The occasional presence of myxoid stroma in well-differentiated liposarcomas can lead to confusion with myxoid sarcoma subtypes. Correct diagnosis is critical and reflects remarkable differences in behavior and therapeutic choices.

Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis in infancy and childhood: histopathologic, ultrastructural, and cytogenetic features.

Lipoblastoma is a relatively rare tumor that occurs in infancy and early childhood and arises from embryonic white fat. Although a benign tumor, lipoblastomas tend to recur and may resemble myxoid liposarcoma. The authors report 26 cases over a 15-year period at Texas Children's Hospital. There was a slight female predilection (14F:12M). The most common symptom was a painless mass with or without increasing size. The trunk, extremities, head and neck, retroperitoneum, inguinal canal, peritoneal cavity, and lung were the tumor sites. Most tumors were circumscribed lipoblastomas and the minority

[A patient with mediastinal liposarcoma showing dedifferentiation].

A 70-year-old man visited our hospital with fever and general malaise. Chest CT scanning showed a large tumor shadow in the anterior mediastinum. The tumor was resected. It consisted of a portion rich in fat on the anterior mediastinal side and a solid portion on the left thoracic cavity side. Pathological examination demonstrated liposarcoma (myxoid type). The solid portion was considered to have resulted from dedifferentiation of the cystic portion. Mediastinal liposarcoma accounts for less than 1% of all mediastinal tumors. To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of patients w

Report of two primary renal tumors with myxoid features. Differential diagnosis between benign and malignant entities.

Renal mesenchymal neoplasms are rare entities which can have a benign or a malignant behavior. Herein we describe two renal mesenchymal tumors with myxoid stroma, investigating the wide spectrum of differential diagnosis. With our first case we considered some benign entities such as myxoma, myxoid leiomyoma, and mixed epithelial and stromal tumor; with our second case we considered some sarcomas with myxoid features such as myxofibrosarcoma, low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma, dedifferentiated liposarcoma, and myxoid liposarcoma. During the diagnostic process, it is important to integrate histopat

Primary liposarcoma of the skin: a rare neoplasm with unusual high grade features.

Liposarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults. It presents in three main forms: well-differentiated liposarcoma (which includes adipocytic, sclerosing, inflammatory, spindle cell, and dedifferentiated subtypes), myxoid/round cell liposarcoma, and pleomorphic liposarcoma. Anatomic distribution depends largely on histologic subtype, but the deep soft tissue of the extremities and the retroperitoneum are most frequently affected. Whereas it is accepted that liposarcoma rarely occurs in the subcutaneous soft tissue, the dermis seems to represent an exceedingly rare site of occurrenc
