BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Simian virus 40 (SV40) is an oncogenic DNA virus implicated in some human malignancies, including lymphomas. In the present masked case-control study, we investigated the prevalence of SV40 sequences and the expression of the viral oncoprotein, large tumor antigen (T-ag), in lymphomas and control specimens from patients negative for the human immunodeficiency virus in Costa Rica.

Fludarabine 25 mg/m2 was given on five consecutive days every four weeks to 85 patients with B- and T-cell malignancies. The median number of courses given was five. Overwhelming Clostridium septicum infection in 2 children, 1 and 4 yr old, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and B-cell non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma, respectively, as well as fatal C. perfringens infection in a 3-yr-old child with histiocytosis-X are reported. The frequency of involvement of the nervous system (NS) among 266 patients seen at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, with a diagnosis of malignant lymphoproliferative diseases (MLPD) was determined. Only one of these patients who had a solitary spinal-cord involvement by Hodgkin's disease (HD) was considered to have primary lymphoma of NS. In all other cases, NS was only secondarily involved by MLPD. This was most commonly observed in association with Burkitt's lymphoma and occurred in 49.3 and 67% of such patients who were previously untreated or previously treated, respectively.

A 60-year-old man on methotrexate for treatment of adult-onset Still disease presented with acute onset of fever, pancytopenia, and deranged liver function. Besides FDG-avid lesions in spleen and skeleton, his 18 F-FDG PET/CT study showed diffuse and intense uptake in the liver with significantly suppressed heart and brain activity (reminiscent of a hepatic superscan).
