Mathematics anxiety in secondary students in England.

Whatever the changes that are made to the mathematics curriculum in England, there will always remain a problem with mathematics anxiety. Maths anxiety is rarely facilitative. This study examined aspects of mathematics in secondary schools and how students rated them as sources of anxiety. Over 2000 students in independent and mainstream schools in England completed a 20-item questionnaire designed to investigate maths anxiety levels. The same questionnaire was given to over 440 dyslexic males in specialist schools within the same age range. The results showed that examinations and tests creat

The Impact of Pragmatic Delays for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Mainstream Classrooms.

Increasingly, across the globe, deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students are educated in mainstream schools using spoken language for communication. Classroom interactions require the use of sophisticated pragmatic language skills. Pragmatic skills can be delayed in DHH students and create challenges for the social and emotional adjustment of DHH students at school. School-aged DHH children may present to pediatric health care providers with concerns about communicating effectively and forming friendships with hearing school peers. This review of pragmatic research between school-aged DHH stude

Communication among preschoolers with and without disabilities in same-age and mixed-age classes.

Communicative interactions of preschool children with and without disabilities in classrooms of same or mixed ages were compared. Sixteen children with developmental disabilities (most with mild or moderate mental retardation) and 32 children without disabilities between 1.5 and 4.5 years of age were randomly assigned at the beginning of the school year to either a same- or mixed-age grouping of 6 children. They were observed 6 months later interacting with classmates in a standard free-play environment. Results showed that children in mixed-age classes took more turns in conversations with pa

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in school-aged children with specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Parents play a critical role in their child's language development. Therefore, advising parents of a child with language difficulties on how to facilitate their child's language might benefit the child. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) has been developed specifically for this purpose. In PCIT, the speech-and-language therapist (SLT) works collaboratively with parents, altering interaction styles to make interaction more appropriate to their child's level of communicative needs. AIMS: This study investigates the effectiveness of PCIT in 8-10-year-old children with specific l

A validated case study of facilitated communication.

The case of a 13-year-old boy with autism, severe mental retardation, and a seizure disorder who was able to demonstrate valid facilitated communication was described. In three independent trials, short stories were presented to him, followed by validation test procedures with an uninformed facilitator providing physical support to the subject's arm. In Trials 1 and 3, several specific answers were provided that clearly indicated that the young man, not the uninformed facilitator, was the source of the information. Moreover, some responses seemed to imply that the subject was employing simple

The goalpost moves to preserve the gate: productivity, extraction, and indigenous educational values in STEMM.

Productivity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) is never culturally neutral. Dominant productivity regimes count outputs such as publications, grants, and response times while rendering invisible the relational labor that sustains student persistence, faculty wellbeing, and institutional belonging. This Perspective argues that mainstream productivity norms function as gatekeeping mechanisms sustained by coercive institutional isomorphism, and that relational labor is not service overhead but core scholarly output. Drawing on a 2026 keynote delivered at the A

Beyond Words/Signs: DHH Learners' Spatial Reasoning in Mathematics as Embodied Cognition.

Spatial reasoning is critical across the STEM disciplines. Examining deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children's spatial reasoning in mathematics, particularly geometry, as an embodied phenomenon opens new possibilities for deaf education. The authors inquire into the embodied processes and forms of DHH learners' spatial reasoning, considering how such knowledge can expand access and conceptual opportunities for both DHH and hearing learners. The article focuses on the spatial reasoning of two grade 1 hard of hearing children as they complete a geometric task with a hearing peer in a mainstream

Use of medicines to alleviate negative emotional states among adolescents attending Special Education Centres.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial research evidence indicates that adolescents commonly use a variety of pharmaceuticals. Studies in this area carried out so far in Poland have focused on youth attending mainstream schools. However, there is a lack of research covering adolescents residing in special education centres (SEC). The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of medicine use for negative emotional states (nervousness, difficulties in falling asleep, and depressive mood), and to identify factors associated with the use of the aforementioned medications by SEC youth. Physical education teachers' perceptions and experiences of inclusion in Türkiye: implications for the quality of life and social participation of students with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive education aims to provide equitable access to quality education for all students. While its principles are widely accepted, implementing inclusive education in subjects such as physical education presents specific challenges and requires distinct teacher competencies. Because physical education promotes physical activity, social interaction, and well-being, inclusive practices in this area are essential for the quality of life and social participation of students with disabilities. This study examined the perceptions, experiences, and needs of physical education teachers

Belonging in Reduced-Size Classrooms: Student Outcomes Among Chinese Upper Secondary Students With Intellectual and Other Documented Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: International debates on inclusive education often position reduced-size or specialized classrooms as either supportive provision or potentially segregating placement. Student-perspective evidence remains limited, particularly for upper secondary students with intellectual and other documented disabilities. METHODS: This sequential explanatory mixed-methods study examined associations between reduced-size classroom (RSC) placement and academic and socio-emotional outcomes among 153 upper secondary students with documented disabilities in Wuhan, China. Students were enrolled in RSC

Benchmarking the readability, quality, and educational suitability of large language models in communicating pertussis.

BACKGROUND: Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly among infants, and has re-emerged globally among adolescents and adults. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for health communication and science popularization; however, evidence regarding their readability, quality, and educational suitability for disease-specific patient education remains limited. To date, no systematic evaluation has focused on LLM-generated pertussis health education materials. OBJECTIVE: This study a

Developing a universal reading comprehension intervention for mainstream primary schools within areas of social deprivation for children with and without language-learning impairment: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Some children in areas of social deprivation in Scotland have lower reading attainment than neighbouring children in less deprived areas, and some of these also have lower spoken language comprehension skills than expected by assessment norms. There is a need to develop effective reading comprehension interventions that fit easily into the school curriculum and can benefit all pupils. A feasibility study of reading comprehension strategies with existing evidence of efficacy was undertaken in three mainstream primary schools within an area of social deprivation in west central Scotl

The CAST (Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test): preliminary development of a UK screen for mainstream primary-school-age children.

The article describes a pilot and follow-up study of the preliminary development of a new tool to screen for Asperger syndrome (AS) and related social and communication conditions (the Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test, CAST) in children aged 4-11 years, in a non-clinical setting. In the pilot study, parents of 13 children with AS and of 37 typically developing children completed the CAST. There were significant differences between the AS and typical sample means. The pilot was used to establish preliminary cut-off scores for the CAST. In the main study, parents of 1150 primary-school-age child

Stressors, supports and the social ecology of displacement: psychosocial dimensions of an emergency education program for Chechen adolescents displaced in Ingushetia, Russia.

This study explored the psychosocial benefits of an emergency education intervention serving adolescents displaced by the war in Chechnya. It set out to describe key stressors and sources of social support available to youth served by the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) emergency education program. Interviews were conducted with 57 Chechen adolescents living in spontaneous settlements in Ingushetia, Russia in the fall of 2000. Of particular interest was the degree to which the education program addressed specified psychosocial goals. Findings indicated that young people and their famili

Managing specific learning disability in schools in India.

Specific learning disability (dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia) afflicts 5-15% of school-going children. Over the last decade; awareness about this invisible handicap has grown in India. However, much needs to be done to ensure that each afflicted child gets an opportunity to achieve his or her full academic potential in regular mainstream schools. In order to achieve this ideal scenario, all regular classroom teachers should be sensitized to suspect, and trained to screen for this disability when the child is in primary school. School managements should become proactive to set up resourc

School-based adolescent pregnancy classes.

School-based adolescent pregnancy classes provide the childbirth educator with a unique opportunity to be visible to students. Attitudes about sexuality and pregnancy can be changed within the mainstream population by the presence of prepared childbirth classes at schools. The problems of absenteeism and denial of pregnancy that result in late reporting to health care providers can be minimized. The expectant teen-ager can be encouraged to attend school and given self-confidence in assuming the role of a parent after birth. Support can be engendered from faculty, students, and the teen-ager's

Towards interventions on school dropouts for disabled learners amidst and post-COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Despite objective arguments for inclusive education, there is a dearth of mechanisms to reduce dropouts amongst disabled learners in the extant literature. Thus, this article is one of the outputs of a study, which was conducted after a consistent observation of dwindling numbers of disabled learners who succeed in basic education in South Africa. Of late, the dropout rate increased because of adherence to lock down regulations amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This triggered the need for research on co-creating interventions to mitigate the rate of dropouts
