[A case of multiple jejunal diverticula with strongyloidiasis and malabsorption syndrome].

We reported multiple jejunal diverticula with strongyloidiasis and malabsorption syndrome. To our knowledge, 140 cases including the present one have been reported in Japan. We reviewed these cases in this report.

[Alkaline phosphatase in the intestinal mucosa of children with the malabsorption syndrome].

110 children suffering from malabsorption underwent several biopsies of the gut to confirm coeliac disease (CD) following the ESPGAN criteria. We studied the values for alkaline phosphatase (AP) in the intestinal mucosa after gluten challenge. In 42 patients the after challenge biopsy was normal, thus excluding coeliac disease. In 68 children the mucosa was severely damaged confirming CD. In all biopsy specimens lactase, invertase, maltase and alkaline phosphatase were measured. We found a good correlation between PA values and severity of mucosal damage, showing that measurement of PA in the

[Enteroclysis in malabsorption syndrome in adults. Apropos of 73 cases].

We retrospectively analyzed the small bowel radiographies, performed by enteroclysis in 73 patients presenting a malabsorption disease. The etiology are: celiac disease (44 cases), abetalipoprotidemia (2 cases), Whipple's disease (7 cases), mastocytosis (1 case), amyloidosis (1 case), ischemia enteritis (4 cases), radiation injury (4 cases), lymphangiectasia (4 cases), Crohn's disease (4 cases) and NH lymphoma (2 cases). With enteroclysis, the radiological diagnosis of malabsorption disease is improved and it is able to differentiate malabsorption diseases based on radiological features: incre

Cholesterol synthesis in the small intestine of patients with malabsorption syndrome.

Cholesterol synthesis was studied in intestinal biopsies obtained from children with different forms of malabsorption syndrome. It was demonstrated that intestinal cholesterol synthesis is enhanced in celiac disease and several other forms of malabsorption syndrome. Mevinolin inhibited intestinal cholesterol synthesis in all groups of patients. No correlation was found between cholesterol synthesis and age and sex of the patients, clinical manifestation of the disease and plasma cholesterol level.

[The nutritional status in malabsorption syndrome following gastrointestinal operations].

The nutritional status which includes selected biochemical, anthropometric and immunologic parameters was determined in 36 patients with malabsorption syndromes following gastrointestinal operations. The examinations revealed: Postoperative malabsorption syndromes often lead to considerable nutritional disturbances which cannot be sufficiently estimated by the sole determination of body mass. The nutritional status is a precious tool in judging deficiency symptoms, in instituting a targeted alimentary or substitutive therapy, and in evaluating the therapeutic accomplishment. Optimal long-time a…

Osteopenia with decreased bone formation in beagles with malabsorption syndrome.

Morphometric and bone density studies were performed on bones from 10 healthy adult dogs and 9 dogs that had exhibited signs of intestinal malabsorption for variable periods of time. The dogs with malabsorption syndrome had a marked decrease in the amount of trabecular bone in lumbar vertebrae (P less than 0.001). Evaluation of undecalcified rib cross sections revealed these dogs had a decrease in trabecular thickness (P less than 0.01) and cortical area (P less than 0.01). There was a decrease in the proportion of the trabecular surface covered with osteoblasts (P less than 0.01) and an incre

Immunochemical study of the malabsorption syndrome with cow's milk intolerance.

The effect of cow's milk provocation on the immunoglobulins in the intestinal mucosa, intestinal juice, stool extracts, as well as on the levels of antibodies to cow's milk and beta-1C/A in serum, was studied in 18 infants with the malabsorption syndrome. The infants improved on breast milk and were therefore suspected to be intolerant to cow's milk and challenged with it. At the time of clinical relapse a marked and uniform increase in the numbers of IgA- and IgM-containing cells, 2.4 times as many on the average as before challenge, was observed in the jejunal mucosa of eight reacting patien

Tropical sprue: a narrative review of a neglected malabsorption syndrome.

Tropical sprue, a rare malabsorption syndrome, remains a significant yet underrecognized gastrointestinal disorder endemic to tropical regions, including South and Southeast Asia (e.g., India, Pakistan) and Caribbean islands (e.g., Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti). Its etiology remains uncertain, but mounting evidence supports an infectious origin, with bacterial overgrowth involving pathogens such as Alcaligenes, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter species frequently implicated. The disease causes profound intestinal alterations that impair the absorption of vitamin B12, fat-soluble vitam

Selective amyloidosis of the small intestine presenting as malabsorption syndrome.

Amyloidosis is a unique metabolic storage disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract but rarely causes severe symptoms. We describe the case of a 51-year-old woman presenting with chronic small bowel diarrhoea and malabsorption. Barium contrast studies and enteroscopy revealed a coarse mucosal pattern and thickening of the jejunal and proximal ileal folds. Histological examination revealed massive deposits of amyloid in thejejunal wall. No predisposing factor was found and there were no other sites of deposition. This is a rare case report of primary selective small intestinal amyloidosis

Localized abdominal Castleman disease masquerading as malabsorption syndrome.

Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of unclear etiology. It usually presents as localized enlarged lymph nodes in children. Surgical excision is curative in localized form. Clinical findings of malabsorption are rarely reported in the literature. Herein, we describe a 14-year-old girl who presented with anemia, failure to thrive, osteoporosis, zinc, and vitamin deficiency. She was diagnosed as localized mesenteric mixed type of Castleman disease. Her clinical findings improved after surgical excision of the mass.

[Malabsorption syndrome. Rare differential diagnosis in a young patient].

In a young female patient originally coming from Albany, immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID) could be diagnosed as a cause for severe maladsorption. Considering clinical and histological criteria an early disease stage of IPSID could be diagnosed. Under the continuous treatment of doxycycline for more than 3 1/2 years, all disease manifestations like watery diarrhea, vomiting, pain in the upper abdomen and loss of weight disappeared. After discontinuation of the antibiotic therapy the patient reached a sustained response.
