Odontogenic myxoma is a benign, rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin comprising of 3%-6% of all odontogenic tumors. Odontogenic myxoma occurs more commonly in the second and third decade and is more commonly seen in mandible compared with maxilla but behaves more aggressively in maxilla as it spreads through the maxillary antrum. It is usually associated with a painless swelling without any symptoms. The radiographic features are similar to other odontogenic tumors, and hence, it leads to diagnostic dilemma. Therefore, thorough knowledge regarding clinical, radiographical, and histopathological

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm of plasma cells characterized by proliferation of a single clone of abnormal immunoglobulin-secreting plasma cells. Since the amount of hemopoietic bone marrow is decreased in the maxilla, oral manifestations of multiple myeloma are less common in the maxilla than in the mandible. We report the case of 33-year-old Japanese man who presented with a mass in the right maxillary alveolar region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images showed a soft tissue mass in the right maxilla eroding the anterior and lateral walls of the maxillary sinus and e

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. This syndrome is characterized by developmental anomalies, such as odontogenic keratocysts of the jaws, multiple basal cell carcinomas, and skeletal abnormalities. Various neoplasms or hamartomas were observed in association with BCNS.We report on a 45-year-old female patient who presented with a tumefaction of the right maxillary region. After correlating clinical, radiographic, and histological features, diagnosis of BCNS associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the ri

Lymphoma of the head and neck in children can pose a significant diagnostic problem, especially when histologic analysis indicates non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the initial site of involvement is extranodal. This report describes 15 pediatric cases of lymphoma seen from 1981 to 1987 with an initial presentation in the head and neck. Cervical lymph nodes represented the initial site of involvement in 10 of the cases. The other five cases presented with disease in the tonsillar fossa; maxillary sinus and mandible; parotid; pharyngeal wall; trachea and thyroid gland; and ethmoid sinus, sphenoid sinu

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a locally aggressive tumor arising from the Schneiderian membrane which lines the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Aggressive surgical approaches, such as lateral rhinotomy, were used until recently for complete removal of the inverted papilloma. Currently, endoscopic resection is the gold standard in the treatment of inverted papilloma. However, there are situations that justify an open approach. For example there are studies that report a higher postoperative recurrence rate after endonasal endoscopic resection, particularly in the treatment of

INTRODUCTION: The sinonasal tumors belong to rare diseases. They state 0.2-0.8% of all the malignant neoplasms and about 3% of head and neck tumors. These tumors are two times frequent observed in men than in women, mainly between 50 and 70 years old. In the sinonasal complex besides the primary are seen also the metastatic tumors. They state about 1% of all tumors (kidney, testum, breast, pulmonary).
AIM: The aim of our study was to retrospective analysis of the sinonasal tumors, treated in the ENT Department Silesian Medical University in Zabrze. The special attention was carried on the pre

Paragangliomas are tumours of neuroectodermal origin and hormonally active in rare instances. They are very unusual in the paranasal sinuses. We report on the first case--as far as we know--of a recurrent nasal paraganglioma, which started to produce ACTH after a period of ten years and resulted in Cushing's syndrome. Resection of the tumour normalised ACTH and cortisol secretion.

BACKGROUND: This report describes the role of endoscopic resection of maxillary ameloblastoma.
CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old female presented with a maxillary ameloblastoma filling the left maxillary sinus and extending into the left nasal cavity and nasopharynx. The sinonasal portion of the tumor was resected endoscopically. A limited transoral resection was then performed to resect the involved teeth and surrounding margin allowing for primary closure without any tumor recurrence or oronasal fistulas on follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Transnasal endoscopic surgery for odontogenic maxillary tumors is l

We report a case of cavernous hemangioma originating in the maxillary sinus. This is an unusual location for hemangioma, and this case also had a rare presentation involving bone erosion. The substantial bone destruction and resultant widening of the right ostiomeatal complex made it difficult to differentiate this cavernous hemangioma from malignant epithelial tumors.

Yaws is a treponematosis which is rare in Europe. Tertiary stages may present with tumor-like lesions predominantly in the face. These manifestations are called rhinopharyngitis mutilans and goundou. A 40-year-old woman with goundou is presented.

A case is presented of a patient with the coincidental occurrence of two unusual lesions, median palatine cyst and osteoma of the maxillary antrum. There was no atypia of either lesion, but this combination led to the impression that the median palatine cyst had eroded into the maxillary antrum. Both lesions are usually asymptomatic and were incidental findings in this case. An occlusal radiograph is best for showing the palatal radiolucent area and is usually diagnostic. The preferred treatment for median palatine cyst is enucleation; a palatal splint is an excellent aid for reapproximation o

Osteomas are benign tumours characterized by proliferation of compact or cancellous bone. The most common site is the mandible, followed by the sinuses. These tumours are slow-growing, usually asymptomatic, and are generally discovered as incidental radiological findings. Osteomas occur commonly in frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid and maxillary sinus, and very rarely in the sphenoid sinus. Symptoms arise when osteomas obstruct the ostium of the sinus or impinge on adjacent orbital or intracranial structures. Two cases of maxillary sinus osteoma are presented along with a review of the li

Ninety-five cases mucous hypertrophy of the maxillary sinus spreading over several years are examined in this study. They are made conspicuous by radiotomografies. If an hypertrophy of a sinous mucous is often silent or is accompanied with a minor symptomatology (pharynx or ear troubles), in the other cases, it is accompanied with strong headaches. A simple exaeresis of the polype without instrumental operation in the ostium region leads to their disappearance. This rather surprising result allows us to wonder if an ostial dyspermeability is sufficient to explain the sinous headache mechanism.

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a slowly expanding benign lesion developing when there is impeded physiological drainage of the mucous produced by the epithelial lining of the paranasal sinuses, at the sinus ostium, which is an opening that connects the sinus to the nasal cavity. Aetiologies of ostial occlusion include infection, allergy, trauma, previous surgery, benign neoplasm (osteoma or fibrous dysplasia), and malignant or metastatic tumours. Mucoceles commonly develop in the frontal sinus (70-80 per cent), followed by the ethmoid (25 per cent), frontoethmoidal (10-14 per cent), and

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), the second most common cancer occurring in the sinonasal tract, is an aggressive malignancy with a poor five-year survival rate. Spinal metastases to the vertebral column related to this cancer are rare. This report presents a patient with maxillary sinus carcinoma with vertebral metastases at the thoracic level and compression of the spinal cord seven years after surgical resection of the primary tumor. Eleven years after detection of the primary tumor the patient is still able to walk. The role of decompression and/or fusion in spinal metastases with neurologi
