Relationship of chronic ethmoidal sinusitis, maxillary sinusitis, and ostial permeability controlled by sinusomanometry: statistical study.

Three hundred sixty-seven successive patients suffering from chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS) were thoroughly examined by means of maxillary sinusoscopy, a CT scan of the facial sinuses, and sinusomanometry (SMM). Ninety-eight cases of unilateral CMS, 269 cases of bilateral CMS, and 444 chronic ethmoidal sinusitis (CES) cases were evaluated. According to SMM, the maxillary ostia were divided into two groups: 1. maxillary ostium patency (MOP) group and 2. the maxillary ostium nonpatency (MONP) group. The unilateral and bilateral pathologies were separately analyzed so as to minimize the effect…

A Case of Panophthalmitis Secondary to Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis.

Endogenous endophthalmitis is a bacterial or fungal infection within the eye that includes the vitreous and aqueous humors. Panophthalmitis is a subtype of endogenous endophthalmitis that also includes infection of the adjacent soft tissue of the orbit. We present a case of a 91-year-old female who initially presented with left eye pain and decreased vision. She was found to have panophthalmitis secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. To our knowledge, there has not been a case reported in the literature before that has established this association between panophthalmitis and odontogenic…

Maxillary antrolith: a rare cause of the recurrent sinusitis.

Introduction. An antrolith is a calcified mass within the maxillary sinus. The origin of the nidus of calcification may be extrinsic (foreign body in sinus) or intrinsic (stagnant mucus and fungal ball). Most antroliths are small and asymptomatic. Larger ones may present as sinusitis with symptoms like pain and discharge. Case Report. We report a case of a 47-year-old lady who presented with heaviness on the left side of the face and loosening of the left 2nd molar tooth since two months. CT scan of the osteomeatal complex and paranasal sinuses showed an opacification of bilateral maxillary si

Frequency of a dental source for acute maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify radiographic features of odontogenic acute maxillary sinusitis and to determine the frequency of a causative dental infection in patients with radiographic evidence of maxillary sinus fluid. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of 101 sinus computed tomography scans with unilateral or bilateral maxillary sinus fluid. METHODS: Each maxillary sinus was graded for extent of fluid, degree of mucosal thickening, and presence of dental pathology. Univariate chi-square analysis was used to identify potential radiologic and demographic features predictive of sinus fluid. Multiva…

[Compound odontoma as a cause of chronic maxillary sinusitis].

Sinusitis of dental origin is a relatively frequent entity, but the presence of an odontoma in the sinus as a source of this pathology is exceptional. Here we present a case of a young patient who presented chronic maxillary sinusitis over 2 years, originating in an odontoma located in the sinus drainage area.

Leiomyosarcoma of the maxillary sinuses: report of two cases.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant smooth-muscle tumor that has a predilection for the gastrointestinal tract and the female genital tract. It is locally fast-spreading and highly aggressive, and the prognosis is poor. We report two cases of leiomyosarcoma of the maxilla in patients who sought treatment for maxillary swelling, nasal obstruction, and epistaxis; one patient also had orbital involvement and cervical lymph node metastasis. Both patients underwent radical surgery followed by chemo- and/or radiotherapy. The patient with orbital involvement died shortly thereafter, but the other was disea

An ultrasound device in the diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis.

This multicenter study comprised 161 consecutive and unselected patients with suspected acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS). Altogether 322 maxillary sinuses were examined radiologically and by untrasound device (US). Of these, 234 antra were punctured, aspirated and irrigated. The volume of secretion coming out by irrigation was evaluated. The results of US, x-ray and irrigation were compared. For US, the proportion of correct positive results was 82.7% when the secretion volume was heavy, 78.6% when the secretion volume was moderate and 84.3% when the secretion volume was slight. When US finding…

Bacteriology of antrum in children with chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Swabs from 93 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses in children were taken from aerobic and anaerobic bacteria during endoscopy. Bacterial growth was present in 87/93 specimens (93%). Anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 81/87 culture-positive specimens (93%) and were recovered alone in 61 cases (70%) and mixed with aerobic or faculative bacteria in 20 (23%). Aerobic or facultative bacteria were present alone in six cases (7%). A total of 261 isolates (3/specimen), 19 (2.4/specimen) anaerobes and 69 (2.6/specimen) aerobes or facultatives, were isolated. The predominant anaerobic organisms were

Effects of drainage in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis.

24 patients with maxillary sinusitis were studied with regard to the effect of therapy. 8 of the patients were treated with a single dose of antibiotics and repeated antral aspirations at close intervals. 16 other patients were treated with repeated aspirations only. In the first group, 'cure', in the sense of freedom from retained secretion, was achieved after 3-5 aspirations within 2-10 hours. In the second group, changes in the proteolytic activity and the concentrations of albumin, IgG, IgM and IgA were followed. In purulent secretions the proteolytic activity was high and the concentratio…

[Postoperative mucocoeles of the maxillary sinuses (author's transl)].

The postoperative occurrences of mucocoeles of the maxillary sinuses are much rarer than those of the frontal or ethmoid sinuses. Their occurrence following Caldwell-Luc operations is 1:150. They may originate from obliteration of the sinus ostia (antritis dilatans) as well as from residuel mucosa in the upper lateral recesses of the sinus cavities. There are four clinical types of mucocoeles: (1) those which present with a swelling of the cheek, (2) those with destruction of the orbital floor with elevation of the eye, (3) those with destruction of the hard palate (which are extremely rare),
