BACKGROUND: Mediastinal masses are relatively common in pediatric populations, but their coexistence with bronchogenic cysts is extremely rare. Such cases present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges owing to overlapping features and the need for precise identification to guide appropriate management. Reporting this unusual combination enhances awareness and contributes to the understanding of their clinical presentation and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old female of Iranian ethnicity presented with a 3-month history of persistent, nonproductive cough unresponsive to standard medi

This case report details a rare thymic basaloid carcinoma initially misinterpreted as a mediastinal teratoma, underscoring the diagnostic challenges posed by such tumors. A 71-year-old female presented with an asymptomatic anterior mediastinal tumor discovered incidentally during a routine health examination. Surgical intervention, followed by pathological and immunohistochemical analysis including CK-pan, p63, p40, and CD117 molecules, led to a definitive diagnosis of basaloid carcinoma of the thymus. This case highlights the critical importance of differential diagnosis in mediastinal lesion

Pericardial cysts are rare benign intrathoracic lesions, and calcified pericardial cysts are even more uncommon. Most pericardial cysts are asymptomatic, but patients may present with chest pain, dyspnea and any complications of pericardial effusion. We present a case of a left-sided calcified pericardial cyst, highlighting its rarity and symptoms in relation to its location.

Background Mediastinal cysts are benign lesions that may be seen in adulthood as well as in childhood. Mostly congenital lesions constitute 20 to 32% of lesions located in the mediastinum. The main cystic masses are congenital benign cysts (bronchogenic, esophageal replications, neuroenteric, pericardial and thymic cysts), meningocele, mature cystic teratoma, and lymphangioma. In this study, we aimed to analyze the mediastinal cysts operated in our clinic according to the histopathological type, surgical type, morbidity rates and to contribute to the literature on these rare lesions. Methods …

Hydatid cyst is a common zoonosis caused by larval forms of tapeworms called Echinococcus. The problem often occurs in the liver or lung. Cyst rupture and secondary bacterial infection are the most important complications of pulmonary hydatid cyst (PHC). PHC may mimic serious lung diseases such as treatment-resistant pneumonia, tuberculosis, and tumours. This report discusses the case of a paediatric patient with PHC who presented with chronic cough, hilar lymphadenopathies up to 3 cm, and worsening symptoms despite non-specific pneumonia treatment. Hence, PHC should be considered in patients

BACKGROUND: Heterotopia of pancreatic tissue in the thorax and mediastinum is uncommon, although, a common developmental anomaly in the gastrointestinal tract where the aberrant tissue is a component of gastrointestinal duplication cysts, intralobular pulmonary sequestration or teratomas.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an ectopic pancreas located in a giant mediastinal cyst in a 2-year old girl who presented with severe dyspnoea due to external compression of the intra-thoracic structures, mainly the right main bronchus. Surgical resection was carried out with complete relief of sympt…

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations which arise from abnormal budding of the primitive tracheobronchial tube and can localize to either the mediastinum or lung parenchyma. They remain clinically silent in most adults unless they become infected or are large enough to compress adjacent structures. Infections involving bronchogenic cysts are often polymicrobial. Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and mycobacterial infections have been reported, though frequently a pathogen is not identified. We present the case of a 46-year-old female with known history of bronchogenic cyst who prese

OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with mediastinal cysts involving the oesophagus.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: University hospital, Italy.
SUBJECTS: 11 patients who presented to our department with a mediastinal cyst from 1976-1994.
INTERVENTIONS: Excision of the mass through a posterolateral thoracotomy (n = 10) or by video-assisted thoracoscopy.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Morbidity and mortality.
RESULTS: 8 patients presented with retrosternal or epigastric pain, three of whom had mild dysphagia. In the remaining 3 the tumour was asymptomatic and an incidental finding on a ch…

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital foregut malformations that most commonly arise in the mediastinum. Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts are less frequent and may present diagnostic challenges when located adjacent to mediastinal structures. We report a case of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst that closely mimicked a paraesophageal mediastinal cyst on preoperative imaging. A 72-year-old man was referred to our department after a cystic lesion was incidentally detected during a routine health examination. CT demonstrated a 37-mm well-circumscribed cystic lesion in the right lower thorax. …

Hydatid disease, caused by various Echinococcus species, is endemic in developing countries and most commonly affects the liver and lungs. Approximately 7.4% of cases involve intrathoracic extrapulmonary locations, with pleural involvement usually resulting from rupture of adjacent hepatic or pulmonary cysts. However, primary pleural hydatid cysts are extremely rare, representing less than 1% of extrapulmonary cases, and may cause compressive symptoms depending on size and location. Diagnosis is guided by serologic testing and imaging, while surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment.

Branchial cleft anomalies are a heterogeneous group of congenital disorders that theoretically emerge due to incomplete obliteration of the branchial apparatus, components of the six main pairs of pharyngeal arches, during embryonic development. They can result in a cyst, a sinus, or a fistula. For a congenital lateral neck mass, they represent the most common diagnosis in pediatric neck pathology. Its location is usually in the cervical area, anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. In adults, they present with symptoms such as acute suppurative thyroiditis and recurrent cervical abscess.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts and pericardial defects are both rare. It is extremely rare that both occur simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a coexistent bronchogenic cyst and pericardial defect reported in China. We performed a literature review and found a relationship between bronchogenic cysts and pericardial defects, which further revealed the correlation between the bronchus and pericardium during embryonic development.
CASE SUMMARY: A 14-year-old boy attended a local hospital for ankylosing spondylitis. Chest radiography showed an enhan

We report a case of anterior bronchogenic mediastinal cyst (ABMC) in old age patient underwent Robotic Thoracic Surgery (da Vinci Surgical System). Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) represents the routine approach in posterior bronchogenic mediastinal cyst, but some limitation for resection of mediastinal mass located in the anterior mediastinum has been reported. The introduction of da Vinci surgical system has overcome the surgical limits of VATS as two dimensional vision (2D) and the use of long rigid instruments with poor maneuverability in case of fine dissection.

We describe a two-stage surgical approach in a patient with cardiac dysfunction and hemodynamic compromise resulting from a massive and compressive mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. To drain this cyst, video-assisted mediastinoscopy was performed as an emergency procedure, which immediately improved the patient's cardiac function. Five days later and under video thoracoscopy, resection of the cyst margins was impossible because the cyst was tightly adherent to the left atrium. We performed deroofing of this cyst through a right thoracotomy. The patient had an uncomplicated postoperative recovery,

We report a case of a mediastinal cystic retrosternal process, discovered by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a 19-year-old male patient, with unusual inhomogenous signals in both T1- and T2-weighted images and contrast-enhancing septation. Macroscopically, the tumor weighed 1330 g, and was constituted by one dominating cyst measuring 14 cm in diameter. Additional small cysts were seen microscopically. The cystic wall was continuously infiltrated by nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma, also affecting adjacent lymph-nodes. Age and sex of the patient and the diagnosed subtype of Hodgkin's l…
