OBJECTIVES: Prolonged grief disorder is associated with significant distress and impairment and thus efforts to improve treatments are essential. The present pilot study tested the efficacy and feasibility of group Metacognitive Grief Therapy (MCGT) designed specifically for prolonged grief symptomatology to reduce the psychological distress and impaired function resulting from bereavement.
DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two bereaved adult participants with prolonged grief symptomatology were randomised to a wait-list control (n=10) or an intervention condition (n=12) with a 3-month and 6-month

INTRODUCTION: Both clinical observations and empirical data suggest that the ability to think about the mental states of themselves and others (i.e., metacognition) is a crucial factor strongly associated to the outcome of individual psychotherapies. Although it has been hypothesized that the activation of cooperation between patient and psychotherapist within psychotherapy sessions may increase metacognitive abilities, few data is still available to support this hypothesis.
METHODS: We explore the association between cooperation of patient and psychotherapist and the modifications of metacog…

Drug addiction has been associated with lack of insight into one's own abilities. However, the scope of metacognition impairment among drug users in general and opiate dependent individuals in particular is not fully understood. Investigating the impairments of metacognitive ability in Substance Dependent Individuals (SDIs) in different cognitive tasks could contribute to the ongoing debate over whether metacognition has domain-general or domain-specific neural substrates. We compared metacognitive self-monitoring ability of a group of SDIs during methadone maintenance treatment (n = 23) with …

Deficits in emotion recognition and social interaction characterize individuals with Asperger's Disorder (AS). Moreover they also appear to be less able to accurately use confidence to gauge their emotion recognition accuracy (i.e., metacognitive monitoring). The aim of this study was to extend this finding by considering both monitoring and control processes in emotion recognition among adults with AS. Those with AS were found to have difficulties acting on the basis of their metacognitive monitoring despite showing no deficits in their ability to discriminate accurate from inaccurate decisio

Metacognitive therapy (MCT) for depression is derived from the Wells and Matthews (1994) self-regulatory model, in which a Cognitive-Attentional Syndrome (CAS) is the cause of psychological disorders. MCT for depression focuses on identifying patients' CAS and helps them to stop it. The CAS consists of worry, rumination and dysfunctional coping strategies. The focus in MCT is on removing the CAS by challenging positive and negative metacognitive beliefs and eliminating dysfunctional behaviors. In this case series, MCT was delivered to four depressed Danes and treatment was evaluated in 5-11 se

People who recall or forecast many pleasant moments should perceive themselves as happier in the past or future than people who generate few such moments; the same principle should apply to generating unpleasant moments and perceiving unhappiness. Five studies suggest that this is not always true. Rather, people's metacognitive experience of ease of thought retrieval ("fluency") can affect perceived well-being over time beyond actual thought content. The easier it is to recall positive past experiences, the happier people think they were at the time; likewise, the easier it is to recall negati

On the basis of the analogy between intrusive thoughts and auditory hallucinations established by Morrison et al. [(1995). Intrusive thoughts and auditory hallucinations: a cognitive approach. Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, 23, 265-280], the present work compares the metacognitive beliefs and processes of five groups of patients (current hallucinators, never-hallucinated people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, recovered hallucinators, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, and a clinical control group) and a non-clinical group. The results show that of the five metacognitive

The effectiveness of a new treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is addressed. Treatment was based on a metacognitive theory of mechanisms by which natural traumatic processing is enabled or hindered by coping strategies. It suggests that elimination of worry/rumination, of maladaptive attention strategies, and enhancing metacognitive flexibility, will permit natural processing and a return to normal cognition. An A-B direct replication series (n = 6) with follow-up assessments at 3, 6, and 18-41 months was implemented. Treatment commenced 3-10 months post-trauma. All patients sh

The current article is a continuation of a previous article (Leaf, Uys & Louw 1997) suggesting that alternatives to the current traditional perceptions of learning and therapeutic methods are essential if learning institutions are to enable learners to move successfully into the next millenium. The need for the speech-language therapist to adopt a non-traditional approach to learning and to change from a language instructor to a learning facilitator within a consultative-collaborative role in the unique South African situation is discussed. Research results, specifically relating to how the sp

We examined the self-reported use of reading, study, and learning strategies in university students with a history of reading difficulties (HRD; n = 77) and with no history of reading difficulties (NRD; n = 295). We examined both between-groups differences in strategy use and strategy use as a predictive measure of academic success. Participants completed online questionnaires regarding reading history and strategy use. GPA and frequency of use of academic support services were also obtained for all students. University students with HRD reported a different profile of strategy use than their

This chapter examines the relationship between curiosity and metacognition as critical drivers of autonomous and self-regulated learning. We synthesize recent research to propose a unified framework integrating behavioral, computational, and psychoeducational dimensions, arguing that curiosity-the intrinsic drive to acquire new knowledge-relies fundamentally on metacognitive monitoring and control. From an educational perspective, we evaluate interventions designed to enhance curiosity in classroom settings. While promising, our review indicates that these interventions yield mixed results, of…

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students, during their 9-12 month hospital internship in China, commonly experience rumination (repetitive negative thinking) in high-pressure clinical environments, which is closely associated with mental health problems. Previous researchers have suggested that psychological resilience, as a key protective factor, may alleviate this process. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, particularly regarding the roles of metacognition and post-traumatic growth (positive psychological change following adversity), which warrant further investigation.

BACKGROUND: Group metacognition, the capacity to reflect on a group’s cognitive processes, including awareness of other members’ information organization, planning, and efforts for improvement, plays a critical role in collaborative learning efficacy. In medical education, group metacognition supports students in discussing clinical cases, recognizing peers’ diagnostic reasoning, and jointly evaluating their team’s approach to patients care. However, factors influencing group metacognitive competency remain underexplored among medical students. We hypothesized that in collaborative learning, t…

The aim of this study was to determine whether serum androgen levels have an effect on mindfulness and metacognition in adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Adolescents diagnosed with PCOS were asked to answer a questionnaire that included socio-demographic information and two scales: the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) and the Metacognition Scale Child and Adolescent form (MCQ-C). The patients were divided into two groups, the hyperandrogenism group and the non-hyperandrogenism group, according to serum androgen levels. The scores of MAAS and MCQ-C were compared between…

Teaching skin of colour (SOC) is essential to equitable dermatologic care. Historically dermatology teaching has favoured lighter skin tones - fostering inequitable care of patients. Although significant advancements in teaching SOC have been made, these are predominantly addended to curricula. Limited dedicated contact time in dermatology and competing study needs may lead to undergraduate medical students and generalists deprioritising adjunctive SOC training. Using a metacognitive framework, we propose SOC should be embedded across all teaching materials for medical students and generalists

PURPOSE: Metacognitive interventions have emerged as promising therapeutic approaches for individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis (FEP), given the relationship between metacognitive deficits, reduced cognitive insight, and symptom persistence. This systematic review synthesizes the available evidence on the effectiveness of metacognitive therapies in adults with FEP, focusing on their impact on cognitive insight, psychotic symptoms, and global functioning.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus following PRISMA guidelines, with

BACKGROUND: The Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) is widely used to assess dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs in both clinical and non-clinical adolescent populations. As no adolescent-specific validation has been conducted in Turkey, this study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the MCQ-30 in Turkish adolescents. METHOD: The sample included 338 adolescents aged 11–18 years who had applied to child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinics. Participants completed a sociodemographic and clinical data form, the MCQ-30, the Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale…
