Loneliness among veterans in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness among military veterans may have unique features because of deployment-related experiences. Consequently, loneliness is increasingly recognized as an issue that may affect the health of veterans, even years after military deployment. AIMS: To examine the prevalence of loneliness in Dutch veterans and to assess the extent to which their loneliness is associated with deployment-related factors. METHODS: We invited 6000 veterans who have left the Armed Forces to fill out a questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to assess the association between lonelines…

Military Exposures Predict Mental Health Symptoms in Explosives Personnel but Not Always as Expected.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the unique and combined associations of various military stress exposures with positive and negative mental health symptoms in active duty service members. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated 87 male U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians (age M ± SE, range 33.7 ± 0.6, 22-47 years). Those who endorsed a positive traumatic brain injury diagnosis were excluded to eliminate the confounding effects on mental health symptoms. Using a survey platform on a computer tablet, EOD technicians self-reported combat exposure, deployment

Tropical skin diseases in British military personnel.

Skin complaints are common in travellers to foreign countries and are responsible for up to 25% of medical consultations by military personnel during deployments in the tropics. They also have relatively high rates of field hospital admission, medical evacuation and referral to UK Role 4 healthcare facilities. Non-infectious tropical skin diseases include sunburn, heat rash, arthropod bites, venomous bites, contact dermatitis and phytophotodermatitis. During tropical deployments skin infections that commonly occur in military personnel may become more frequent, severe and difficult to treat. S

Examining the Relationship Between School Climate and Peer Victimization Among Students in Military-Connected Public Schools.

In the Iraq and Afghanistan war context, studies have found that military-connected youth- youth with parents and/or siblings serving in the military-have higher rates of school victimization than their nonmilitary-connected peers. A positive school climate-where students perceive high levels of school connectedness, caring relationships and high expectations from adults, and meaningful participation-is associated with lower rates of victimization in secondary public schools. Based on a survey of 7th, 9th, and 11th grade students (N =14,493) enrolled in 6 military-connected school districts (d

Skill sets and competencies for the modern military surgeon: lessons from UK military operations in Southern Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION: British military forces remain heavily committed on combat operations overseas. UK military operations in Afghanistan (Operation HERRICK) are currently supported by a surgical facility at Camp Bastion, in Helmand Province, in the south of the country. There have been no large published series of surgical workload on Operation HERRICK. The aim of this study is to evaluate this information in order to determine the appropriate skill set for the modern military surgical team. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of operating theatre records between 1st May 2006 and 1st May 2008 was per

Individual variation in plasma oxytocin and vasopressin levels in relation to the development of combat-related PTSD in a large military cohort.

In an attempt to decrease the risk of developing mental health problems after military deployment, it is important to find biological markers to identify those at risk. Oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) are potential biomarkers for the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because they are involved in the regulation of stress and anxiety. Therefore, the aim was to examine whether plasma OT (pOT) and AVP (pAVP) levels before and after deployment are biomarkers for the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms over time in addition to other known risk factors. This st…

Predictors of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Depressive Disorders, and Any Mental Health Condition Among U.S. Soldiers and Marines, 2001-2011.

Understanding mental health disorder diagnosis and treatment seeking among active-duty military personnel is a topic with both clinical and policy implications. It has been well documented in military populations that individual-level military experience, including deployment history and combat exposure, influences mental health outcomes, but the impact of unit-level factors is less well understood. In the current study, we used administrative longitudinal data to examine a comprehensive set of unit- and individual-level predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), non-PTSD anxiety diso

Hypochlorous Acid: A Multipurpose New Addition to the Military Med Bag?

BACKGROUND: A medical bag (med bag) in the military medical community contains medical supplies and equipment used to provide care on the battlefield or in noncombat field conditions. Though its contents are situation-dependent (eg, deployment, field exercise, physical fitness event), it generally contains items such as intravenous supplies, airway management tools, pain medications, bandages, tourniquets, splints, suture materials, and antiseptics. OBSERVATIONS: Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for disinfecting surfaces and wound care. In the milita

Tuberculosis trends in the U.S. Armed Forces, active component, 1998-2012.

Members of the Armed Forces represent a segment of the U.S. population that may be at increased risk for tuberculosis (TB) infection, disease, and transmission due to overseas service in endemic areas and residence in congregate settings. The purpose of this study was to examine recent surveillance trends and risk factors associated with TB disease in the active component U.S. military. The rate of TB in the U.S. military -0.6 per 100,000 population (n=128) over the interval from 1998 to 2012 - was lower than the age-adjusted rate among the U.S. population (adjusted rate ratio=0.20) over the s

The Impact of Lifetime Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) on Mental Health Symptoms among Service Members in Interdisciplinary TBI Programs.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is highly prevalent among active duty service members (ADSMs) and imposes a significant health burden, particularly on mental health (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD] and depressive symptoms). Little is known about how TBI setting characteristics impact PTSD and depressive symptom expression in service members undergoing interdisciplinary TBI care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 455 patients enrolled in interdisciplinary, outpatient TBI programs within the military health system. Using Poisson regression with robust error varian

Monitoring Exposure to Ebola and Health of U.S. Military Personnel Deployed in Support of Ebola Control Efforts - Liberia, October 25, 2014-February 27, 2015.

In response to the unprecedented Ebola virus disease (Ebola) outbreak in West Africa, the U.S. government deployed approximately 2,500 military personnel to support the government of Liberia. Their primary missions were to construct Ebola treatment units (ETUs), train health care workers to staff ETUs, and provide laboratory testing capacity for Ebola. Service members were explicitly prohibited from engaging in activities that could result in close contact with an Ebola-infected patient or coming in contact with the remains of persons who had died from unknown causes. Military units performed

The contributions of child-mother attachment, maternal parenting stress, and military status to the prediction of child behavior problems.

Studies show that children with a military parent are at heightened risk of the development of behavior problems. However, there is limited … els of internalizing problems; however, only parenting stress was associated with conduct problems. Military deployment predicted higher levels of internalizing and conduct problems beyond the contributions of attachment and stress. Furthermore, having a father in the military (whether deployed or not) also contributed to internalizing problems. These findings shed l …

Military-related relocation stress and psychological distress in military partners.

Spouses/partners play a crucial role in providing support to military service members (SMs), maintaining a sense of stability for the family, and supporting the overall mission of the armed forces. However, several aspects of the military lifestyle may impact their own psychological health. Much research has focused on the role of SMs' deployments and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in partners' distress, but no study has yet quantitatively investigated these factors in tandem with the common military life stressor of frequent relocations. The present study investigated the degre

How much is enough? Using Delphi to explore the clinical-contact-time and return-to-practice needs of military nurses.

Aim Military nurses are required to deploy worldwide at any time to support British forces. They must maintain military and clinical skills, and fulfil other military commitments as required. These diverse responsibilities make it challenging for military nurses to maintain the level of clinical expertise they require for short-notice deployments. A service evaluation was conducted to investigate issues related to clinical contact time (CCT) and to return to practice (RTP) for military nurses. Method A consultative approach was taken in the form of a modified Delphi study, followed by a milita
