Avian pneumovirus (APV) is an emerging viral respiratory disease agent of turkeys in Minnesota. Clinical signs of APV infection include open mouth breathing, ocular and nasal discharge, and swelling of infraorbital sinuses. Cryptosporidiosis associated with recreational water exposure is becoming recognized more frequently. This report summarizes the investigation of a large outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with exposure to a water sprinkler fountain at the Minnesota Zoo. The initial cases were not diagnosed as cryptosporidiosis by the health-care system despite patients seeking care, underscoring the need for increased awareness of cryptosporidiosis and routine laboratory diagnostic practices among health-care providers.

The natural history of cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis) was investigated in a population-based study in Rochester, Minnesota. Eleven new cases were identified with onset during the 20-year period 1960-1979. The overall incidence rate was 1.2 per 100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval 0.5-1.9) with a female:male ratio of age-adjusted incidence rates of 3.6:1. In January 1980, the Minnesota Department of Health began the surveillance of toxic shock syndrome with epidemiologically defined active and passive components. Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis bacterial infections can manifest with atypical and severe symptoms in immunocompromised patients. We report a fatal case of severe ehrlichiosis caused by E. muris eauclairensis in a liver transplant recipient in Minnesota, USA. Healthcare providers must remain vigilant about tickborne infections in endemic regions, especially among immunocompromised patients.

In 2007 Minnesota passed into law a comprehensive ban on indoor smoking of tobacco products in public places including bars, restaurants, and workplaces. Despite reductions in smoking prevalence in the past 12 years, people are still exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS). It remains important to understand where and how long nonsmokers face exposure to SHS. Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) are flushed from watersheds during hydrological events, contaminating downstream surface waters and resident fish populations. We monitored total mercury (THg), MeHg, and ancillary water chemistry parameters in two streams (Cedar Creek and Trott Brook) in east-central Minnesota on a weekly or semiweekly basis from April through October 2003. BACKGROUND: Although there have been many studies on working youth in the United States, we have noted none which have provided a broad picture of adolescent work practices in a rural community.
METHODS: Six high schools in rural Minnesota were evaluated for adolescent work practices. Schools ranged in size from 173 to 525 students in grades 9 through 12. A 20 page self-administered survey examining work practices was administered to students.

Of the hundreds of minerals that are found in the earth, most canine uroliths are comprised of only six types: (1) magnesium ammonium phosphate, (2) calcium oxalate, (3) calcium phosphates, (4) ammonium urate and other salts or uric acid, (5) cystine, or (6) silica. Each type has characteristics that allow its identification. During the past two decades, the prevalence of calcium oxalate canine uroliths has dramatically increased, while struvite has decreased. The most effective treatment and prevention protocols are based on knowledge of the primary mineral type comprising the urolith.
