Practices and Attitudes of Missouri School Nurses Regarding Immunization Records and Select Immunizations of Graduating High School Seniors.

School nurses play a key role in maintaining a healthy student population, and one of their roles includes maintaining vaccination records. Further, they can play an important role in advocating for human papillomavirus (HPV) and meningococcal vaccination for students. All Missouri public high school nurses were sent an electronic survey addressing the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding immunization records and HPV and meningococcal vaccination of high school seniors. Approximately 75% of nurses reported their schools did not have or they did not know if the school had a written pol…

Genetic analyses of the parasitic nematode, Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, in Missouri and Kentucky reveal unexpected levels of diversity and population differentiation.

Wildlife translocations, which involve the introduction of naive hosts into new environments with novel pathogens, invariably pose an increa … ure among P. tenuis taken from white-tailed deer and elk at a source (Kentucky) and a release site (Missouri). We found high levels of diversity at both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA in Missouri and Kentucky and a high level of differentiation between states. Our results highlight the importance of considering the potential for increased disease risk from …

A call for renewed research on tick-borne Francisella tularensis in the Arkansas-Missouri primary national focus of tularemia in humans.

Arkansas-Missouri has emerged as the primary U.S. focus of tularemia, which is caused by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Category A Priority Pathogen Francisella tularensis, over the past 30 yr. There are several pieces of indirect evidence suggesting that a key role of ticks in the transmission of F. tularensis to humans in Arkansas-Missouri is the primary reason why tularemia has remained a prominent disease of humans in this two-state area while fading away from other central or eastern states after a general decline in rabbit-associated tularemia cases. The primar…

Evaluation of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in dogs of Missouri, including serologic status to Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia equi and Borrelia burgdorferi.

Canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis was diagnosed in 37 dogs by finding ehrlichial morulae in 0.1 to 26.2% of their blood neutrophils and eosinophils. All 37 dogs had clinical signs of arthritis or muscular stiffness. Titer to Ehrlichia canis was determined in sera from 31 of the 37 dogs; 25 dogs had titer ranging from 1:20 to 1:5,120. In the other 6 dogs, titer to E canis was less than 1:10. The most common hematologic abnormality in these dogs, other than rickettsiemia, was thrombocytopenia. Granulocytes infected with ehrlichial organisms were not found in another 10 dogs that had clinical sign

Cancer mortality and the method of chlorination of public drinking water: St. Louis City and St. Louis County, Missouri.

St. Louis City and St. Louis County, Missouri share the same public drinking water source, namely the Missouri River. The 'all cancer' and most organ specific cancer mortality rates have been consistently and considerably higher for St. Louis City than for St. Louis County for the period 1960 through 1972. A change in the St. Louis County water treatment process, which included increasing the chlorine dosage and delaying the addition of ammonia to form chloramines until just prior to distribution, was instituted in 1955. St. Louis City has, by contrast, continued the lower chlorine level and e…

Tissue metal concentrations and toxicity in wild turkeys following chronic exposure to mining-contaminated soils in southeast Missouri, USA.

The Big River watershed in southeast Missouri (SEMO) is a Superfund site with an extensive history of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) mining; cadmium (Cd) and other metals also occur in the ore and waste materials. We examined whether SEMO wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) exposed to mining-contaminated floodplain soils and food resources in the Big River watershed had elevated metal concentrations in their tissues, indicating Pb poisoning and associated toxic effects. Compared to reference birds (n = 15) harvested in northern Missouri, SEMO turkeys (n = 23) had significantly elevated Pb concentratio…

High burdens of Ixodes scapularis ticks and surveillance for Babesia spp. in Carolina Wrens (Thryothorus ludovicianus) in Missouri, USA.

The incidence of human tick-borne diseases is rising globally. Birds are ecologically significant hosts, capable of local or widespread dispersal for ticks and their associated pathogens, including agents of babesiosis. Despite its emerging importance, surveillance for zoonotic Babesia spp. ((Starcovici, 1893) Piroplasmida: Babesiidae) remains lacking, particularly in avian hosts. This study investigates the prevalence of Babesia spp. in a population of Carolina Wrens ((Latham, 1790) Passeriformes: Troglodytidae Thryothorus ludovicianus) in Missouri, USA. Due to their ground-foraging behavior …

Potency of an Inactivated Influenza Vaccine against a Challenge with A/Swine/Missouri/A01727926/2015 (H4N6) in Mice for Pandemic Preparedness.

H4 influenza viruses have been isolated from birds across the world. In recent years, an H4 influenza virus infection has been confirmed in pigs. Pigs play an important role in the transmission of influenza viruses to human hosts. Therefore, it is important to develop a new vaccine in the case of an H4 influenza virus infection in humans, considering that this virus has a different antigenicity from seasonal human influenza viruses. In this study, after selecting vaccine candidate strains based on their antigenic relation to one of the pig isolates, A/swine/Missouri/A01727926/2015 (H4N6) (MO/1…

Seasonal denning behavior and population dynamics of the late Pleistocene peccary Platygonus compressus (Artiodactyla: Tayassuidae) from Bat Cave, Missouri.

The late Pleistocene faunal assemblage from Bat Cave, central Ozarks, Missouri provides an opportunity to assess specific aspects of behavior, ecology, and ontogeny of the Rancholabrean species Platygonus compressus. All identifiable elements referable to this taxon were catalogued and examined, and a minimum number of individuals of 73 was determined for the sample. Evidence of seasonal behavioral patterns are reported for the first time in a fossil peccary. Maturation of individuals was assessed using the tooth eruption sequence and occlusal wear patterns for all tooth-bearing mandibular ele…

Outbreak of Chlamydia pneumoniae Infections and X-ray-Confirmed Pneumonia in Army Trainees at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, 2014.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp) is a bacterium that causes pneumonia and other respiratory diseases. Fever may be present early but absent by time of presentation to clinic. Increases in X-ray-confirmed pneumonia (XCP) and laboratory-confirmed Cp infections were observed in new soldiers in training at Fort Leonard Wood (FLW), Missouri, early in 2014. These findings prompted a site assistance visit from the U.S. Army Public Health Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, with a review of available data and information to describe the outbreak, and inspections of barracks and training…

The Impact of Intimate Partner Violence on Women's Physical Health: Findings From the Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health problem. It has far reaching consequences such as social and economic costs, as well as a negative impact on women's health outcomes. This study assessed the relationship between IPV and health risk factors, health behaviors, and poor mental health in Missouri women utilizing 2005 Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data ( n = 3,110). Moderators (demographic indicators) of the relationship between IPV and health risk factors (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity) and health behaviors (physical …

Metacarpophalangeal arthropathy associated with manual labor (Missouri metacarpal syndrome). Clinical radiographic, and pathologic characteristics of an unusual degeneration process.

We describe 7 manual laborers with painful, palpably enlarged metacarpophalangeal joints. Characteristic radiographic changes were joint space loss, prominent osteophytes, and cystic metacarpal heads most prominent in the second and third metacarpophalangeal joints. In 3 of 4 patients, joint biopsy specimens showed subsynovial fibrosis and villous hyperplasia. All 7 patients had similar backgrounds of heavy work demanding sustained gripping motions of both hands, for periods that exceeded 30 years. We designated their condition metacarpophalangeal arthropathy associated with manual labor.
