BACKGROUND: Dexmedetomidine is an α2 receptor agonist with sedative and analgesic properties. During bariatric surgery, its use may reduce postoperative opioid requirements, reduce their side effects, and improve quality of recovery. Rates of local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) were measured in morphine-dependent and morphine-abstinent rats. Morphine pellets were implanted s.c. (one pellet 7 days before glucose utilization measurement and two pellets 4 days before the measurement) to produce opioid dependence. The pharmacokinetic disposition of morphine was studied in sham-operated dogs, dogs with hepatic devascularization, and dogs with bile duct and ureter ligation after iv administration of 1 mg/kg of morphine.
