Commuter motorcycle crashes in Malaysia: An understanding of contributing factors.

In Malaysia, two-thirds of reported workplace-related fatal and serious injury incidents are the result of commuting crashes (especially those involving motorcyclists), however, little is known about the contributing factors to these collisions. A telephone survey of 1,750 motorcyclists (1,004 adults who had been involved in a motorcycle commuting crash in the last 2 years and 746 adult motorcyclists who had not been involved in a motorcycle crash in the last 2 years) was undertaken. The contributions of a range of behavioural, attitudinal, employment and travel pattern factors to collision in

Validation of a persian version of motorcycle rider behavior questionnaire.

In Iran, road traffic injuries are the first cause of burden of disease and motorcyclists are the most vulnerable road users. Elliot and colleagues developed the "Motorcycle Rider Behavior Questionnaire" (MRBQ), on the basis of Reason's "Driver Behavior Questionnaire" (DBQ) in 2007. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a Persian version of MRBQ. The 43-item MRBQ was adapted to Persian according to translation-back translation method. The questionnaire was significantly revised after assessment of content validity. In the revised version, 10 items of original

CT imaging in motorcycle collision victims: routine or selective?

With improving accuracy and efficiency of CT, some trauma centers have used a low threshold for the use of CT scans in the evaluation and assessment of trauma patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic benefits of liberal CT scanning in multisystem blunt trauma motorcycle accident victims. The trauma registry at our community-based Level II center was accessed to identify consecutive motorcycle accident victims within a 55-month period who: 1) were evaluated on presentation by an attending trauma surgeon; and 2) underwent a head, cervical spine, chest, abdomen, or pelvi

Motorcycle helmet use in Southern China: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: In China, despite national motorcycle helmet legislation and the known safety benefits of helmets, helmet use remains low. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of motorcycle helmet use and attitudes towards helmet use among drivers and passengers in two cities in Southern China to provide baseline data and scientific evidence for the formulation of an intervention aimed at strengthening road safety law enforcement. METHODS: Observational sites were randomly selected from three road types (national roads, main streets, and subordinate streets). Observations were conducted

Economic impact of motorcycle helmets: from impact to discharge.

BACKGROUND: The economic impact of helmet use remains controversial. Previous studies of injured motorcyclists suggest a marginal inpatient hospital cost difference between helmeted and unhelmeted riders. The purpose of this study was to expand the economic analysis of motorcycle helmet utilization to the point of injury by including motorcycle crash patients who do not require hospital admission. METHODS: Prehospital motorcycle crash data were collected from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) General Estimates System (GES) database from 1994 to 2002 with respec

Florida's motorcycle helmet law repeal and fatality rates.

On July 1 2000, the State of Florida exempted adult motorcyclist and moped riders from wearing helmets provided they have medical insurance of 10,000 US dollars. Monthly time series of motorcycle occupant deaths are examined from 1/1994 to 12/2001. The interrupted time series analysis estimates a 48.6% increase in motorcycle occupant deaths the year after the law change. The impact estimate reduces to 38.2% and 21.3% when trends in travel miles and motorcycle registrations are controlled. Our findings suggest that the law's age exemption should be revoked.

Mortality and injury from motorcycle collisions in Phetchaburi Province.

A retrospective analysis was done in 3,225 injured motorcyclists treated at Phra Chom Klao Hospital between April 1, 1999 and March 31, 2000. The peak of all motorcycle crashes was found between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Male motorcycle riders accounted for 69 per cent of the accident population, and most riders were under 21 years of age. Approximately 21 per cent of the accident-involved riders had been drinking alcohol and about half of the riders were unlicensed. Only 4 per cent of the riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Helmet usage was much lower among passengers, only about

The Colorado motorcycle safety survey: public attitudes and beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle riders have a high risk of traumatic brain injury, disability, and death. Epidemiologic studies have proven that helmets reduce the severity of brain injuries and the cost of care. Yet, Colorado remains one of three states with no helmet law for riders. OBJECTIVES: This study measured public support for (1) a mandatory motorcycle helmet use law and (2) mandatory motorcycle operator safety training. We also sought to ascertain citizens' attitudes toward traffic safety mandates from the federal government. METHODS: Structured telephone interviews were conducted with 407

Compliance with the 1992 California motorcycle helmet use law.

To evaluate helmet use in California before and after the introduction of an unrestricted helmet use law on January 1, 1992, observations of motorcycles and their riders were made at 60 locations in seven California counties, twice before and four times after the law was introduced. Helmet use increased from about 50% in 1991 to more than 99% throughout 1992. Compliance was achieved despite variations in helmet use by motorcycle design and road type. Seven percent of riders used nonstandard helmets after the law. With adequate enforcement, unrestricted helmet use laws can achieve almost 100% c…

Fatal injuries in motorcycle riders according to helmet use.

OBJECTIVE: Helmets have been shown to be effective in preventing head injuries in motorcyclists, but some studies have suggested that helmets may cause injury to parts of the head or neck because they add mass to the head. DESIGN: This study examined patterns of fatal injuries in helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Coroner reports, hospital records, and police reports for motorcyclists fatally injured in crashes from July 1, 1988 through October 31, 1989 were examined. All injury diagnoses were abstracted and coded to the 1990 version of The Abbreviated Injury Scale

Motorcycling safety research: a review of the social and behavioral literature.

The literature on motorcycling safety research is reviewed, and it is argued that there have been two main periods. The first, spanning the 1970's, was based on accident analysis, and the main objective was to identify and control factors that contribute to the severity of motorcycling accidents. The main concerns were to reduce head and brain injuries through safety helmets, to reduce multi-vehicle collisions through daytime use of headlamps, and to reduce drink-riding. The second period, the 1980's shifted the emphasis of research to what might be called 'riding analysis'--that is, analysis

The geographical distribution of motorcycle accidents in Tasmania, 1983-1986.

Motorcycles have traditionally been a mode of transport that was an inexpensive alternative to motorcars. Today the picture has changed. Motorcycles are now mainly used for sport and recreation in general. Public disquiet about the high risks of accidents among motorcyclists has led to the introduction of motorcycle rider training schemes in Australia in recent years. This paper shows the value of geographical analysis in establishing which areas in Tasmania are high risk areas for motorcycle accidents. The Tasmanian Motorcycle Rider Training scheme is assessed in terms of its value in reducin…

Helmet effectiveness in preventing motorcycle driver and passenger fatalities.

Helmet effectiveness in preventing fatalities to motorcycle drivers and passengers was determined by applying the double pair comparison method to the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) data for 1975 through 1986. Motorcycles with a driver and a passenger, at least one of whom was killed, were used. In order to reduce as much as possible potentially confounding effects due to the dependence of survivability on sex and age, the analysis is confined to male drivers (there were insufficient female driver data), and to cases in which the driver and passenger age do not differ by more than thre…
