Methodology for establishing a population-based birth cohort focusing on couple fertility and children's development, the Upstate KIDS Study.

BACKGROUND: Critical data gaps remain regarding infertility treatment and child development. We assessed the utility of a birth certificate registry for developing a population cohort aimed at answering such questions. METHODS: We utilised the Upstate New York livebirth registry (n = 201,063) to select births conceived with (n = 4024) infertility treatment or exposed infants, who were then frequency-matched by residence to a random sample of infants conceived without (n = 14,455) treatment or unexposed infants, 2008-10. Mothers were recruited at 2-4 months postpartum and queried about their r

Preterm birth and mortality and morbidity: a population-based quasi-experimental study.

IMPORTANCE: Preterm birth is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. However, previous studies have been unable to rigorously examine whether confounding factors cause these associations rather than the harmful effects of being born preterm. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the extent to which the associations between early gestational age and offspring mortality and morbidity are the result of confounding factors by using a quasi-experimental design, the sibling-comparison approach, and by controlling for statistical covariates that varied within families. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

Overweight and obesity status from the prenatal period to adolescence and its association with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in young adults: cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of maternal and child overweight status across multiple time-points with liver fat content in the offspring during young adulthood. DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: ELEMENT Cohort in Mexico City. POPULATION: Pregnant women with singleton births (n = 97). METHODS: We quantified hepatic triglyceride content (liver fat content) by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) and conventional T2-weighted MRIs (3T scanner) in 97 young adults from the ELEMENT birth cohort in Mexico City. Historical records of the cohort were used as a source of pregnancy,

Fetal and perinatal mortality, United States, 2006.

OBJECTIVES: This report presents 2006 fetal and perinatal mortality data by maternal age, marital status, race, Hispanic origin, and state of residence, as well as by fetal birthweight, gestational age, plurality, and sex. Trends in fetal and perinatal mortality are also examined. METHODS: Descriptive tabulations of data are presented and interpreted. RESULTS: There were 25,972 reported fetal deaths at 20 weeks of gestation or more in the United States in 2006. The U.S. fetal mortality rate was 6.05 fetal deaths at 20 weeks of gestation or more per 1,000 live births, 3% lower than in 2005 (6

Association Between Paternal Alcohol Consumption Before Conception and Anogenital Distance of Offspring.

BACKGROUND: There are limited studies on the effects of paternal alcohol consumption, before conception, on the reproductive development of offspring. Anogenital distance (AGD), the distance from the center of the anus to the genitals, is a sensitive biomarker of reproductive hormone abnormalities during the critical developmental window. The relationship between paternal alcohol consumption and AGD of human offspring has not been studied yet. METHODS: This cohort study included 1,292 pregnant women recruited in Shanghai. An in-person interview was conducted to collect information on demograp

Analysis of incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity among very-low-birth-weight infants in North Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Although significant advances have been made in perinatal care, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a serious complication in prematurely born individuals. There have been limited studies on ROP in Taiwan, and most of those existing reports are outdated. METHODS: This retrospective study included 252 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Chang Gung Children's Hospital over a 2-year period between July 2005 and June 2007. All infants were examined for ROP according to the guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Parental age and Neurofibromatosis Type 1: a report from the NF1 Patient Registry Initiative.

One of the potential etiologies for non-familial Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is increasing parental age. We sought to evaluate recent evidence for parental age effects in NF1 in a large study. Individuals with NF1 and a comparison group from the U.S. general population born between 1994 and 2012 were ascertained from the NF1 Patient Registry Initiative (NPRI) and the National Center for Vital Statistics, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to identify differences between familial NF1, non-familial NF1, and U.S. population subjects in the mean parental ages at the

Chronic hypertension as a risk factor for offspring to be born small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypertension during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk for birth of small for gestational age offspring. The aim of this study was to determine whether the risk remains after consideration of maternal characteristics and superimposed pre-eclampsia. METHOD: A population-based cohort study based on the Swedish Medical Birth Register 1992-98 and comprising 560 188 women aged 15-44 years with singleton pregnancies including 2,754 women with chronic hypertension. The register contains data of maternal characteristics besides maternal and fetal complications. Multipl

Impact of preconception and antenatal supplementation with myo-inositol, probiotics, and micronutrients on offspring BMI and weight gain over the first 2 years.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional intervention preconception and throughout pregnancy has been proposed as an approach to promoting healthy postnatal weight gain in the offspring but few randomised trials have examined this. METHODS: Measurements of weight and length were obtained at multiple time points from birth to 2 years among 576 offspring of women randomised to receive preconception and antenatally either a supplement containing myo-inositol, probiotics, and additional micronutrients (intervention) or a standard micronutrient supplement (control). Maternal exposure to bisphenol A and anogenital distance throughout infancy: A longitudinal study from Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most common endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) with a ubiquitous presence. Both animal and human studies have reported the association between maternal exposure to BPA and anogenital distance (AGD) in offspring. However, the results are conflicting and the longitudinal effect is unknown. We aimed to examine the effect of maternal exposure to BPA on AGD in offspring in a longitudinal birth cohort from birth to 1 year of age. METHODS: BPA was assayed using urine samples collected at 12-16 gestational weeks from 982 pregnant participants who later d

Comprehensive assessment of the associations between maternal diabetes and structural birth defects in offspring: a phenome-wide association study.

PURPOSE: Our objective was to comprehensively evaluate the risk of a broad range of birth defects among offspring of women with diabetes, overall and stratified by pregestational versus gestational diagnosis, using the phenome-wide association (PheWAS) methodology. METHODS: We performed a registry linkage study of all live births (>6,500,000) and birth defects cases (>290,000) in Texas, 1999-2015. We ascertained diabetes from birth and fetal death certificates. We calculated prevalence rate ratios (PRR) for phenotypes with ≥10 cases among exposed offspring (n = 130). RESULTS: Diabetes was as

Breastfeeding higher order multiples: enhancing support during the postpartum hospitalization period.

Higher order multiple birth (HOM) families require genuine and effective support in their quest to breastfeed their infants during the postdelivery hospitalization period. Evidence suggests that the impact of current policies and care practices on HOM breastfeeding requires careful examination. Recommendations for enhanced support include evidence-based breastfeeding of multiples practices, multiples-specific breastfeeding education for HOM families and health professionals, and establishment of an HOM breastfeeding consultation network. Equally important are coordinated breastfeeding care, de

Paternal and maternal exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and birth outcomes: a multi-country cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to adverse birth outcomes. However, few investigations have considered paternal PFAS exposure. We estimated the parent-specific associations of prenatal PFAS exposures with adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: This study included 498 couples from the INUENDO cohort recruited at antenatal care visits in Greenland, Poland, and Ukraine during 2002-2004. We measured five major types of PFAS in parental serum during pregnancy. We analyzed three birth outcomes ascertained from medical records, includi

Perinatal outcomes of multiple births in southwest Nigeria.

Compared to singletons, multiple births are associated with a substantially-higher risk of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide. However, little evidence exists on the perinatal profile and risk of neurodevelopmental disabilities among the survivors, especially in developing countries. This cross-sectional study, therefore, set out to determine the adverse perinatal outcomes that are potential markers for neurodevelopmental disabilities in infants with multiple gestations in a developing country. In total, 4,573 mothers, and their 4,718 surviving offspring in an inner-city maternity hosp

Neonatal regulatory behavior problems are predicted by maternal early pregnancy overweight and obesity: findings from the prospective PREDO Study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal overweight/obesity and comorbid hypertensive disorders and gestational diabetes associate with neurodevelopmental delay in the offspring in childhood. We hypothesize that these maternal conditions associate also with the offspring regulatory behavior problems and impact on neurodevelopment via the offspring regulatory behavior. METHODS: A number of 3117 women of the PREDO Study filled in a questionnaire on regulatory behavior problems at the child's mean age of 16.9 days and 2116 of them a questionnaire on developmental milestones at the child's mean age of 42.2 months.

Multiple births and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Prevailing hypotheses about the causes of ovarian carcinogenesis predict that women with a history of multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.) should be at increased risk of epithelial ovarian cancer. However, the scant available evidence suggests that they may actually be at lower risk. To resolve this issue, we pooled data from eight studies involving 2859 parous women with epithelial ovarian cancer (case patients) and 7434 parous women without ovarian cancer (control women). In addition to assessing their history of multiple births (and the sex of the children, where
