Does Music Positively Impact Preterm Infant Outcomes?

BACKGROUND: The hospital environment leaves preterm infants (PTIs) exposed to various stressors that can disrupt their growth and development. Developmental interventions such as music may be an important strategy to mitigate PTI's stress. This brief evaluates current evidence regarding the impact of music therapy on outcomes for PTIs. PURPOSE: The question guiding this brief is "Do various types of music therapy positively affect physiologic indicators, feeding behaviors/length of stay (LOS) and pain management outcomes for PTIs?" SEARCH STRATEGY: CINAHL/MEDLINE Complete and PubMed database…

[Music, composers and psychopathology: the psychiatrist's view].

A first reason for the psychiatrist to be interested in music, musicians and their artistic work, comes from the strong biographical and scientific evidence linking mood disorders and in particular, bipolar disorder, to artistic creativity. Moreover, a family association between psychopathology and creativity has been found in several studies. Important changes in mood, but also cognition, personality and behaviour can occur during all phases of manic-depressive illness and these changes have potentially important effects on creativity and productivity. Those changes are usually opposite in ma…

Alcohol brand appearances in US popular music.

AIMS: The average US adolescent is exposed to 34 references to alcohol in popular music daily. Although brand recognition is an independent, potent risk factor for alcohol outcomes among adolescents, alcohol brand appearances in popular music have not been assessed systematically. We aimed to determine the prevalence of and contextual elements associated with alcohol brand appearances in US popular music. DESIGN: Qualitative content analysis. SETTING: We used Billboard Magazine to identify songs to which US adolescents were most exposed in 2005-07. For each of the 793 songs, two trained code…

Lefthandedness among students of architecture and music.

Three groups of subjects (60 students of architecture and 88 of music, and 87 from a general student group) were assessed on lefthandedness, reading problems, dyslexia, and stuttering. There was a higher frequency of lefthandedness among students of architecture, as well as a higher frequency of reading difficulties, dyslexia and stuttering among students of architecture and music, than the comparison group. These findings were discussed in relation to Geschwind's hypotheses.

Music therapy for children with Rett syndrome.

Access to a handicapped child with Rett syndrome may be attempted through its eyes and by means of music. The receptivity for rhythm and melodies must be located within a primitive region of the hierarchical structure of the brain because even severely retarded children do respond to music. If purposefully applied with several instruments music therapy can bring about at least a temporary cessation of the stereotypic movements in children with Rett syndrome. Many years of experience attest to the feasibility of this approach.

Medical services for outdoor rock music festivals.

This paper describes the medical services provided at an outdoor rock music festival near Toronto and reviews similar services at other outdoor concerts as reported in the literature. Between 0.5% and 1.5% of concertgoers were reported to have used medical services, proportions that may be useful in planning for future festivals. Most of the medical problems encountered were minor, although life-threatening problems occasionally occurred. Alcohol and drug abuse were common but led to major medical problems in only small proportions of patients. Guidelines for planning are suggested that includ…

Potential Time: The Music of Potential Space.

This paper introduces potential time as a psychoanalytic concept that extends and complements Winnicott's potential space. Revisiting Freud' … ng of time fosters the emergence of a patient's own temporal signature. Reflections on mourning and music illuminate how potential time allows for living with loss, coordinating multiple temporalities, and sustaining creative living.

Exploring the interaction between cannabis and music.

Cannabis use has long been associated with enhanced music experiences, yet scientific research on its effects on auditory perception remains limited. This convergent mixed-methods self-report study investigated how recreational cannabis users experience auditory stimulation and music in particular. A total of 104 participants completed an online questionnaire, 15 of which were selected to participate in an optional semi-structured interview. Quantitative analyses showed that listening to music was the most commonly reported activity while high, indicated by 45% of participants. Participants re…

[Cannabis and nicotine in German music videos].

Smoking of tobacco and cannabis is widespread in Germany. Preventing children and adolescents from starting to use these products is an important goal of prevention. The aim of the present study was to examine how often depiction or mention of cannabis and nicotine use occurs in German-language music videos, which can be seen as advertising for smoking. The sample, which comprised the population of all German-language music videos listed in the YouTube Top 100 Charts in 2023, included 600 music videos. Using a coding scheme, the music videos were categorised as 'smoke-free' or 'not smoke-free' …

Drug-related deaths at Australian music festivals.

BACKGROUND: Illicit drug use is overrepresented in music festival attendees compared with the general population. Drug use often involves a wide range of substances with the potential to cause drug toxicity. Law enforcement-centred strategies intended to deter drug use and supply at these mass gatherings have been implemented throughout Australia. However, many have been criticised for their lack of effectiveness, with evidence suggesting that they can inadvertently increase the risk of drug harm. Drug deaths are often multifactorial, providing added challenges in the development of prevention…

Hearing disorder from music; a neglected dysfunction.

CONCLUSION: Music-induced acute acoustic trauma is not inevitably linked to hearing dysfunction as validated by conventional pure tone audiometry. Tinnitus is often in combination with hyperacusis. Our results point at 'silent hearing loss' as the underlying pathology, having afferent nerve terminal damage rather than hair cell loss as the structural correlate. OBJECTIVES: Exposure to loud music is one of the most common causes of acute acoustic trauma, which adolescents and teenagers experience by voluntary exposure to loud music of sound levels up to 110 dB(A). METHODS: The clinical and ps…

LSD enhances the emotional response to music.

RATIONALE: There is renewed interest in the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). LSD was used extensively in the 1950s and 1960s as an adjunct in psychotherapy, reportedly enhancing emotionality. Music is an effective tool to evoke and study emotion and is considered an important element in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy; however, the hypothesis that psychedelics enhance the emotional response to music has yet to be investigated in a modern placebo-controlled study. OBJECTIVES: The present study sought to test the hypothesis that music-evoke…

[Mental disease in two classical music composers].

A study οn two neglected classical music composers suffering a not syphilitic mental disease, is attempted here, syphilis of the central nervous system being frequent in that time. A brief overview on the psychiatric ailments of many great composers reveals suicide attempts and more or less severe depression following external events. The issue of a possible relationship between mental disease and (musical) creativity can be discussed, as mood swings and a certain tendency to melancholia are frequent features of a talented brain (a fact that can also be detected in their works). The first case…

Design of an efficient music-speech discriminator.

In this paper, the problem of the design of a simple and efficient music-speech discriminator for large audio data sets in which advanced music playing techniques are taught and voice and music are intrinsically interleaved is addressed. In the process, a number of features used in speech-music discrimination are defined and evaluated over the available data set. Specifically, the data set contains pieces of classical music played with different and unspecified instruments (or even lyrics) and the voice of a teacher (a top music performer) or even the overlapped voice of the translator and oth…
