Urine samples from 26 cigarette smokers on a restricted diet were collected in the late afternoon. Urine extracts on XAD-2 resin were tested for mutagenicity in the microsuspension assay using Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98 in the presence of metabolizing and deconjugating enzymes. The enhancement of the mutagenicity of anticancer drugs by the calcium antagonists verapamil (CAS 52-53-9) and fendiline (CAS 13042-18-7) is reviewed. Both calcium antagonists enhance synergistically the induction of chromosome aberrations (dicentric and ring chromosomes) in cultured human lymphocytes by the antitumor agent bleomycin. Mutagenic effect of direct electric current on sprouts of Vicia faba L. was detected. The effect manifested itself in increase in percentage of cells with chromosome aberrations in root meristem. The most considerable injuries are observed when root meristem contacts with the positive electrode during current passing. Typical peculiarity of mutagenic effect of current is appearance of dicentrics which exceed the control value 4 times. By the end of the first mitotic cycle, gradual reduction of percentage of injured cells, reaching the control value, is observed.

The 19 chemicals most commonly detected in a study of mobile homes in Texas were tested for mutagenicity using a battery of bacterial test strains; the literature was searched to obtain additional information concerning the mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of these chemicals.
