The diagnosis of canine heartworm infection is based upon the presence of circulating Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae or on techniques for the detection of serum antibodies or antigens. In the first of these, discrimination between D. immitis, D. repens and Acanthocheilonema dracunculoides microfilariae is based upon the acid phosphatase histochemical stain. In this paper, we propose an alternative technique for histochemical staining using a commercial kit test of naphthol-AS-OL (Leucognost-SP). This offers the advantages of speed and simplicity as compared to the standard Barka procedure.

Three cases of splenic involvement in three different types of generalized mastocytosis (systemic mast cell disease) are reported. The macroscopic, histological and ultrastructural modifications of the spleen are described. Each case exhibited a different morphological pattern. Giemsa staining, fluorescence after acridine orange staining and naphthol ASD chloracetate esterase reaction are shown to be valuable for diagnosis. A series of multi-functional tyrosinase inhibitors derived from kojic acid (KA) and hydroquinone-like diphenols were designed and synthesized using click chemistry. The in vitro enzymatic assay revealed that all compounds containing a free enolic structure showed excellent activity against tyrosinase (IC50 = 0.14-3.7 µM), being significantly more potent than KA. Rifampin (RIF) is a first-line drug used for the treatment of tuberculosis and other bacterial infections. Various RIF resistance mechanisms have been reported, and recently an RIF-inactivation enzyme, RIF phosphotransferase (RPH), was reported to phosphorylate RIF at its C21 hydroxyl at the cost of ATP. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remained unknown. Here, we solve the structures of RPH from Listeria monocytogenes (LmRPH) in different conformations. LmRPH comprises three domains: an ATP-binding domain (AD), an RIF-binding domain (RD), and a catalytic His-containing domain (HD).

An efficient metal-free, photoredox-mediated cascade cyclization of aryl 1-haloalk-5-ynyl ketones has been developed. Using catalytic amounts of eosin Y (EY) and EtNMe2 as a reductive quencher, various aryl 1-haloalk-5-ynyl ketones have been transformed into the corresponding cyclization products in up to 98% yield. As a result, synthetic access to differently α-functionalized cyclopenta[b]naphthones and direct construction of cyclopenta[b]naphtholes has been developed.

The carboxilic activity of giant cells of human granuloma produced by P. brasiliensis was studied. The enzymatic activity was revealed by reddish-brown, purple red, and indigo-blue cytoplasmic precipitate, using the substrates alpha-naphthyl-acetate, naphthol-AS acetate and 5-bromo-4-chloro-indoxyl acetate respectively. The giant cells were intensely positive in all cases studied. We believe this esterasic activity is related to the lytic, lisosomic activity of the macrophages and giant cells in response to the activity by the P. brasiliensis in tissue.

Twenty male volunteers were exposed to 95 ppm trichloroethylene for 4 h. Immediately before and aftere xposure and 4 h and 20 h after cessation, some serum-enzymes, the cytoenzymological activity of the alkaline and acid phosphatases and the naphthol-AS-D-esterase in neutrophil granulocytes and the acid-base equilibrium were investigated. Compared with the control experiment, the activities of the three neutrophil enzymes increased during trichloroethylene exposure with high significance. No significant changes of the serum-enzymes and the acid-base equilibrium could be found.

This study investigated the impact of physicochemical parameters on geosmin production in Hope Valley reservoir during periods of absent pelagic cyanobacteria. Over 42 months, extracellular geosmin was consistently detected, with concentrations ranging from less than 4 ng/L to 37 ng/L during benthic cyanobacterial periods and increasing to 128 ng/L when pelagic cyanobacteria were active. The n-n-type ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposite was fabricated using malic acid following a simple one-pot co-precipitation method. The fabricated ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposite was employed as a photocatalyst in the degradation of Biebrich scarlet dye under UV254 light.
