BACKGROUND: We analyzed trends in survival of children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in the United States from 1975 to 2022 using the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 8 and 17 databases. Our goal was to provide an updated overview of outcomes and highlight disparities to guide future research.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the SEER 8 and 17 registries for patients diagnosed at 0 to 19 years. Overall survival (OS) was stratified by race/ethnicity, diagnosis, and population density. Temporal trends in five-year OS were evaluated usi

BACKGROUND: Women and their health care providers need a reliable answer to this important question: If a woman chooses to participate in regular mammography screening, then how much will this choice improve her chances of avoiding a death from breast cancer compared with women who choose not to participate?
METHODS: To answer this question, we used comprehensive registries for population, screening history, breast cancer incidence, and disease-specific death data in a defined population in Dalarna County, Sweden. The annual incidence of breast cancer was calculated along with the annual inci

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with chronic diseases are shown to be vulnerable for risky sexual behavior. Childhood cancer patients seem to engage in risky health behaviors as frequently as general population, but little is known about sexual issues in this group of patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We characterized the risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in a Finnish population-based cohort of over 6,000 childhood cancer patients diagnosed with cancer under the age of 20 years between 1971 and 2009, compared with over 30,000 age- and sex -matched population comparisons. The data were constr

Cervical cancer (CC) stands as the second most prevalent cancer among women in Morocco, with an estimated annual incidence of 2165 cases and over 1199 associated deaths. However, the lack of a comprehensive national registry requires caution in interpreting these figures. This review highlights the examination of the epidemiological profile, diagnostic modalities, risk factors, treatment, and prevention related to CC screening within the context of Morocco. High-risk subtypes of the human papillomavirus (HPV) are the etiological cause of the disease in most cases. Underscoring the urgent need

The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS), an aggregation of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Program of Cancer Registries and the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results program, is the largest population-based registry focused exclusively on primary brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors in the United States (US). As of this report, the CBTRUS database represents the entire US population. This report contains the most up-to-date population-based data on primary brain tumors and supersedes all …

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Alaska Native (AN) people, and the second leading cause of cancer death. The incidence rate for the combined years 1999 through 2003 was 30% higher than the rate among U.S. whites (USWs) for the same period. Current incidence rates may serve to monitor the impact of screening programs in reducing CRC in the AN population.
METHODS: Incidence data are from the Alaska Native Tumor Registry and the National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. We compared AN CRC incidence, sur

The increased survival in malignant cutaneous melanoma (melanoma) is probably due to early diagnosis combined with improved treatment most recently. National health campaigns and screening programs for melanoma detection were started in Sweden several decades ago. We want to assess the influence of tumor characteristics, based on the TNM classification, and of second primary cancers on overall survival in melanoma. We used the Swedish Cancer Registry to assess all-cause survival in melanoma from 2003 to 2015. Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated using multivariable Cox regression models. A total

We aim to investigate the role of medication adherence history in treatment needed diabetic retinopathy (TNDR). We conducted a retrospective nested case-control study using 3 population-based databases in Taiwan. The major one was the 2-million-sample longitudinal health and welfare population-based database from 1997 to 2017, a nationally representative random sample of National Health Insurance Administration enrolled beneficiaries in 2010 (LHID2010). The national death registry and national cancer registry were also checked to verify the information. The outcome was defined as the TNDR. The

Cervical cancer is a major health problem for Korean women, accounting for 9.8% of new female cancer cases, even though incidence rates have been decreasing. The Korean cervical cancer mortality rate for 1993-2002 based on National Statistical Office data shows an increasing trend, but the actual rates are thought to have decreased by epidemiologists, clinicians and other cancer experts. To explain this gap and solve this problem, we corrected the number of cervical cancer deaths by comparing death certificate cases of unspecified uterine cancer data with the national cancer incidence database

BACKGROUND: The cancer-specific death rate is a commonly used indicator in the assessment of progress against cancer. However, since the cause of death is often not substantiated and complete medical information is lacking, the validity of cancer-specific mortality rates is being questioned.
PURPOSE: We investigated the validity of the cancer-specific death rate by examining noncancer deaths of cancer patients in a large patient population.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program on cancer patients diagnosed

Although a screening program for gastric cancer, using barium X-ray examination, has been carried out widely in Japan for the past 3 decades, there is insufficient evidence to confirm its effectiveness in terms of reducing mortality. To evaluate the effectiveness of the screening, a population-based case-control study was carried out in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Case subjects, who had died from gastric cancer (198) and control subjects matched in age, sex and residence (577) were selected from among members of the National Health Insurance. Their screening histories during 5 years before the c

BACKGROUND: Chordoma, an age-dependent rare cancer, arises from notochordal remnants. Fewer than 5% of chordomas occur in children. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous syndrome characterised by abnormal tissue growths in multiple organ systems. Reports of chordoma in children with TSC suggest that TSC1 and TSC2 mutations may contribute to chordoma aetiology.
METHODS: To determine whether the 10 TSC-associated childhood chordomas reported in the literature are representative of chordoma in the general paediatric population, the authors compared age at diagn

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated temporal trends in the age distribution of opportunistic low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening relative to national proportions of invasive lung cancer among adults aged 20-39 years.
METHODS: Age-specific proportions of invasive lung cancer were analyzed using data from the Taiwan Cancer Registry (2011-2023) relative to total annual cancer diagnoses. Opportunistic LDCT screening-defined as voluntary screening among asymptomatic individuals outside organized national programs-was evaluated using single-center health checkup data over the same period,

Cervical cancer is the third most common form of cancer that strikes Malaysian women. The National Cancer Registry in 2006 and 2007 reported that the age standardized incidence (ASR) of cervical cancer was 12.2 and 7.8 per 100,000 women, respectively. The cumulative risk of developing cervical cancer for a Malaysian woman is 0.9 for 74 years. Among all ethnic groups, the Chinese experienced the highest incidence rate in 2006, followed by Indians and Malays. The percentage cervical cancer detected at stage I and II was 55% (stage I: 21.0%, stage II: 34.0%, stage III: 26.0% and stage IV: 19.0%).

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes most cervical cancers and some cancers of the penis, vulva, vagina, oropharynx, and anus. Cervical precancers can be detected through screening. HPV vaccination with the 9-valent HPV vaccine (9vHPV) can prevent approximately 92% of HPV-attributable cancers (1).* Previous studies have shown lower incidence of HPV-associated cancers in non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations compared with other racial subgroups (2); however, these rates might have been underestimated as a result of racial misclassification. Previous studies have shown

UNLABELLED: Lip cancer has a distinct biological behavior within head and neck oncology, although population-based survival studies remain scarce. We analyzed data from the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program to assess the prognostic value of tumor stage, histologic grade, and race in lip cancer diagnosed during 2010 to 2020. A retrospective cohort of 6,717 invasive lip tumors was extracted from 17 SEER registries. Cause-specific survival was estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves and compared with log-rank tests. Cox proportional hazards regression generated
