The authors present a documented sporadic de novo cavernous malformation of the central nervous system (CNS) in a patient undergoing follow-up magnetic resonance imaging after resection of an acoustic neuroma. The authors believe that this is the first report of a de novo cavernous malformation in a patient without a familial history of this disease or a history of treatment with cranial radiation. The occurrence of de novo lesions invalidates the common assumption that cavernous malformations are congenital lesions. The use of this assumption to calculate bleeding risks retrospectively in pat

Here we describe a patient with a new malformation syndrome which shows similarities with Yunis-Varon syndrome (YVS). Prenatal presentation included polyhydramnios, increased nuchal translucency, and bilateral hydrothoraces requiring pigtail insertion. Postnatal presentation revealed primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), persistent hydrothoraces, one atrial and two ventricular septal defects, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and cerebellar vermis, dilated interhemispheric ventricles, severe developmental delay with general muscular hypotonia, retinal anomalies, sparse scalp hair, sparse eyebr

This paper discusses the clinical value of standardized early pregnancy ultrasound structure screening in the diagnosis of fetal central nervous system (CNS) malformations. In this paper, 6902 cases (8336 fetuses) of 11~13 + 6 weeks of gestation (5468 cases of singleton pregnancy and 1434 cases of twin pregnancy) underwent standardized early pregnancy ultrasound structure screening. While tracking the pregnancy process and clinical outcome, we found that 13 cases of CNS malformations (10 cases of single pregnancy, 3 cases of twin pregnancy) were detected by prenatal ultrasound in 6902 cases (8

The teratological impact of radiological contamination from the Chernobyl accident was evaluated in relation to central nervous system and eye defects in 18 regional registries in nine countries of Western Europe. Six classes of anomaly were analysed: neural tube defects, arhinencephaly, microcephaly and brain reduction, hydrocephaly, anophthalmos and microphthalmos, and congenital cataract. Conceptions up to 31 August 1986 were grouped into two exposure cohorts. In cohort A the sensitive period of fetal development to radiation fell wholly or partly between 1 May and 30 June 1986. Cohort B in

BACKGROUND: The difficulty many birth defects registries have in identifying early pregnancy terminations can lead to significant underreporting of certain types of malformations. This study was designed to determine the potential benefit of using maternal ICD-9 codes relating to management of pregnancy due to fetal anomaly in surveillance of central nervous system (CNS) defects (655.0).
METHODS: Women assigned the ICD-9/ICD-9-CM (henceforth termed ICD-9) code 655.0 between 1990 and 2000 were ascertained from two administrative health databases in Manitoba, Canada, one relating to maternal se

Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC) is a rare condition characterized by the absence of a portion of skin at birth. Skin defects are usually small (0.5 to 3 cm) and located on the scalp. Although there can be other physical or genetic abnormalities, ACC is most often a benign isolated condition. Rarely is an underlying bony defect present, and this association increases the rate of complications. We report a case of a newborn male with ACC of the entire crown and vertex scalp, non-ossified parietal skull and dysplastic corpus callosum. The patient's skull and skin defects were treated non-surgically

Here we report on a girl presenting with midline cleft lip/palate, prominent forehead, macrocephaly, first branchial arch anomalies, and tetralogy of Fallot. Imaging studies showed polymicrogyria, enlarged ventricles with a large cystic lesion extending postero-superiorly over the cerebellum, abnormally modeled cerebellum, and congenital aqueductal stenosis. To our knowledge, this combination of clinical signs involving the frontonasal process, midline lip clefting, congenital heart malformation, and severe CNS developmental abnormalities has not previously been reported. Clinical, imaging dat

Complete gross and microscopic neuropathological examinations of 25 children who died with meningomyelocele, the Arnold-Chiari malformation, and hydrocephalus revealed a wide range and frequency of associated central nervous system malformations. The most remarkable of these anomalies were hypoplasia or aplasia of cranial nerve nuclei (20%), demonstrable obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid flow within the ventricular system (92%), cerebellar dysplasia (72%), a disorder of migration of cortical neurons (92%), fusion of the thalami (16%), agenesis of the corpus callosum (12%), and complete or par…

INTRODUCTION: Literature regarding the safety and efficacy of antithrombotic (antiplatelet or anticoagulant) therapy and statins in patients with cavernous malformations (CMs) of the central nervous system is sparse, resulting in uncertainty about its use in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of antithrombotic therapy and statins on the risk of hemorrhage and focal neurological deficit in patients with CMs.
METHODS: The authors' institutional database was screened for all patients with CMs of the central nervous system treated at their institution between 2006

BACKGROUND: The disruption of intracranial fluid dynamics due to large unruptured cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) commonly triggers a domino effect within the central nervous system. This phenomenon is frequently overlooked in prior clinic and may lead to catastrophic misdiagnoses. Our team has documented the world's first case of so-called AVM Pentalogy (AVMP) induced by a AVM.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND RESULT: A 30-year-old female was first seen 9 years ago with an occasional fainting, at which time a huge unruptured AVM was discovered. Subsequently, due to progressive symptoms, s

Trisomy 9 is a lethal chromosomal abnormality that rarely progresses beyond the second trimester of pregnancy. Multiple central nervous system anomalies, including bifid choroid plexus, ventriculomegaly, and Dandy-Walker malformation, associated with multicystic dysplastic kidney disease in a trisomy 9 fetus are reported. The prenatal ultrasound diagnosis has been aided by novel three-dimensional ultrasound software.

This article reviews typical congenital dysplasias of the central nervous system (CNS) in childhood. A wide variety of CNS dysplasias is known. Symptoms in infancy are often nonspecific, and include psychomotor retardation and epilepsy. Brain imaging and genetic studies are important for definitive diagnosis. Although there is no established treatment for congenital CNS dysplasia, a significant number of people with childhood-onset congenital CNS dysplasia reach adulthood. It is hoped that clinicians who treat adults will provide comprehensive support for these patients who have reached the ag

The balance between a protective and a destructive immune response can be precarious, as exemplified by inborn errors in nucleotide metabolism. This class of inherited disorders, which mimics infection, can result in systemic injury and severe neurologic outcomes. The most common of these disorders is Aicardi Goutières syndrome (AGS). AGS results in a phenotype similar to "TORCH" infections (Toxoplasma gondii, Other [Zika virus (ZIKV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)], Rubella virus, human Cytomegalovirus [HCMV], and Herpesviruses), but with sustained inflammation and ongoing potential for

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial structures have an intimate relationship with the central nervous system in the embryologic development period and the developmental abnormalities of the face and skull that are frequently associated with malformations of the central nervous system. Additional intracranial and extracranial malformations in a patient with craniofacial deformity may negatively affect the outcome of the surgery and the quality of life.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a total of 123 patients with craniofacial anomalies was performed. Physical examination notes, ophthalmo
