Earthworms Mitigate Pesticide Effects on Soil Microbial Activities.

Earthworms act synergistically with microorganisms in soils. They are ecosystem engineers involved in soil organic matter degradation and nutrient cycling, leading to the modulation of resource availability for all soil organisms. Using a soil microcosm approach, we aimed to assess the influence of the earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa on the response of soil microbial activities against two fungicides, i.e., Cuprafor Micro® (copper oxychloride, a metal) and Swing® Gold (epoxiconazole and dimoxystrobin, synthetic organic compounds). The potential nitrification activity (PNA) and soil enzyme ac

Roles of nitrite in facilitating nitrogen and sulfur conversion in the hybrid bioreactor of Sulfate-reduced ammonium oxidation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation.

The hybrid bioreactor combining sulfate-reducing ammonium oxidation (Sulfammox) and Anammox offered potential for simultaneous nitrogen and sulfur removal, but the removal efficiency and microbial mechanism remain unclear. This study demonstrated that in the hybrid bioreactor, the ammonium utilization rate (AUR) of Sulfammox increased by 5.42 times. The promotion of NO2- on nitrogen and sulfur conversion in Sulfammox could be attributed to: 1) Increasing extracellular polymers substance (EPS) accelerated the stratification of granule sludge; 2) Increasing the relative abundance of Candidatus B

Cadmium toxicity on communities of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms.

The oxidation of ammonia to nitrite, which constitutes the initial and rate-limiting step in the nitrification process, plays a pivotal role in the transformation of ammonia within soil ecosystems. Due to its susceptibility to a range of pollutants, such as heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, nitrification serves as a valuable indicator in the risk assessment of chemical contaminants in soil environments. Here, we analyzed the effects of cadmium (Cd) treatment on soil potential nitrification rate (PNR), and the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacte

Effects of ferrous iron on the performance and microbial community in aerobic granular sludge in relation to nutrient removal.

Lab-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of ferrous iron on nutrient removal performance and variations in the microbial community inside aerobic granular sludge for 408 days. Two reactors were simultaneously operated, one without added ferrous iron (SBR1), and one with 10 mg Fe2+  L-1 of added ferrous iron (SBR2). A total of 1 mg Fe2+  L-1 of added ferrous iron was applied to SBR1 starting from the 191st day to observe the resulting variations in the nutrient removal performance and the microbial community. The results show that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) could no

Elevated in-stream CO2 concentration stimulates net-N2O production from global fluvial ecosystems.

Riverine CO2 and N2O concentrations have risen since pre-industrial times, yet their biogeochemical interactions remain unclear. This study found a positive correlation between N2O and CO2 saturation in fluvial ecosystems, which was absent at high DOC:NO3 ratios. Low DOC:NO3 ratios and high CO2 saturation promote chemoautotrophic nitrification, suggesting its key role in riverine net N2O production. In vitro experiments confirmed that elevated CO2 enhances nitrification rates, nitrifier gene abundance, and N2O fluxes, indicating that the CO2 fertilization effect on N2O production is a potentia

Impact of ciprofloxacin and copper combined pollution on activated sludge: Abundant-rare taxa and antibiotic resistance genes.

This study aimed to explore the impacts of ciprofloxacin (CIP, 0.05-40 mg/L) and copper (3 mg/L) combined pollution on nitrification, microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in activated sludge system during stress- and post-effect periods. Higher CIP concentration inhibited nitrification and an average of 50% total nitrogen removal occurred under 40 mg/L of CIP pressure. The stress- and post-effects on bacterial diversity and structure were obviously distinct. Abundant genera were more sensitive to combined pollution than rare genera based on full-scale classification and c

Nitrogen dynamics in subtropical fringe and basin mangrove forests inferred from stable isotopes.

Mangroves exhibit low species richness compared to other tropical forests, but great structural and functional diversity. Aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the functioning of mangrove forests, we investigated nitrogen (N) dynamics in two physiographic types of mangroves (fringe and basin forests) in southeastern Brazil. Because fringe forests are under great influence of tidal flushing we hypothesized that these forests would exhibit higher N cycling rates in sediment and higher N losses to the atmosphere compared to basin forests. We quantified net N mineralization and nitrifi

Hydroponic potato production on nutrients derived from anaerobically-processed potato plant residues.

Bioregenerative methods are being developed for recycling plant minerals from harvested inedible biomass as part of NASA's Advanced Life Support (ALS) research. Anaerobic processing produces secondary metabolites, a food source for yeast production, while providing a source of water soluble nutrients for plant growth. Since NH4-N is the nitrogen product, processing the effluent through a nitrification reactor was used to convert this to NO3-N, a more acceptable form for plants. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Norland plants were used to test the effects of anaerobically-produced effluent aft

Oxidation state of bioavailable dissolved organic matter influences bacterioplankton respiration and growth efficiency.

Oxygen consumption by oceanic microbes can predict respiration (CO2 production) but requires an assumed respiratory quotient (RQ; ΔO2/ΔCO2). Measured apparent RQs (ARQs) can be impacted by various processes, including nitrification and changes in dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition, leading to discrepancies between ARQ and actual RQ. In DOM remineralization experiments conducted in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean, ARQs averaged 1.39 ± 0.14, similar to predictions for complete consumption of plankton biomass. DOM removed with an elevated nominal oxidation state (i.e., more oxidized DOM)

Optimizing bioretention nitrogen control: woodchip mulching as vadose zone-focused amendment for pyrite systems.

Pyrite-based bioretention systems exhibit reduced pollutant removal efficiency during heavy rainfall due to insufficient electron donation. While woodchip mulching (WM) is known to supply organic matter, the specific mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the role of WM in pyrite-based system over 13 months. Results show that WM primarily enhanced vadose nitrogen transformation, increasing NH4+-N removal by 24.19 % and raising the potential nitrification rate by 9.50 ng N·g-1·h-1. By improving cation exchange capacity and root activity, WM facilitated NH4+-N adsorption and plant uptake

Heterotrophic nitrifying and oxygen tolerant denitrifying bacteria from greenwater system of coastal aquaculture.

In this work, herbivorous fish Mugil cephalus has been cultured to secrete protein rich green slime, which helps nitrifying and oxygen tolerant denitrifying bacteria to grow and colonize. Four strains representing Alcaligenaceae family have been isolated from greenwater system and characterized using biochemical test, fatty acid methyl ester (GC-FAME) analysis, 16S rRNA and functional gene approaches. They were tested for an ability to nitrify ammonia and nitrite aerobically. Two strains showed notable nitrification activity, when grown in a mineral salts medium containing ammonium sulfate and

Significance of gaseous NO for ammonia oxidation by Nitrosomonas eutropha.

Nitrification by the obligately lithoautotrophic ammonia oxidizer Nitrosomonas eutropha was significantly inhibited when nitric oxide was removed from the culture medium by means of intensive aeration and turbulence. Nearly complete recovery of ammonia oxidation could be achieved by adding 100 ppm NO to the supplied air. Inhibition of ammonia oxidation occurred also upon addition of the NO binding agent 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propane-sulfonic acid (DMPS). Recovery of ammonia oxidation occurred within 3 h in the presence of 100 ppm NO and within 76 h in the absence of externally added NO. In co-cultu

Effects of antibiotics on microbial nitrogen cycling and N2O emissions: A review.

Sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides are the most prevalent classes of antibiotics used in both medical treatment and agriculture. The misuse of antibiotics leads to their extensive dissemination in the environment. These antibiotics can modify the structure and functionality of microbial communities, consequently impacting microbial-mediated nitrogen cycling processes including nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. They can change the relative abundance of nirK/norB contributing to the emission of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. This review provides a compreh

Interactive effect of temperature and plant species on nitrogen cycling and treatment in stormwater biofiltration systems.

Stormwater biofiltration systems (also known as biofilters, bioretention, rain gardens) are engineered nature-based solutions, which help mitigate aquatic nitrogen pollution arising from storm runoff. These systems are being increasingly used in a range of climates across the world. A decline in treatment performance is frequently observed in cold weather conditions. While plant species comprise an important design factor influencing system performance, the effect of temperature on the fate of dissolved nitrogen forms, namely ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-), in the presence of different pla

Field-scale application of spent sulfidic caustic as a source of alternative electron donor for autotrophic denitrification.

Biological reuse of spent sulfidic caustic (SSC) originating from oil refineries is a promising method for the petrochemical industry because of low handling cost. SSC typically contains high concentrations of sulfur, with the most dominant sulfur compounds being sulfide (S(2-)). SSC is also characterized by a high pH and elevated alkalinity up to 5-15% by weight. Because of these characteristics, SSC can be used for denitrification of NO3(-)-N in the biological nitrogen removal process as both the electron donor and buffering agent in sulfur-utilizing autotrophic denitrification. In this stud

Nitrogen starvation coupled with extended anoxic time induces rapid growth of ammonia oxidizers and enrichment of anammox bacteria in low-ammonium wastewater.

Partial nitrification-anammox (PNA) is an energy-efficient autotrophic nitrogen removal process, yet its application to low-ammonium wastewater remains challenging due to the difficulty in selectively suppressing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) while maintaining ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria. Here, we developed a chemical-free strategy based on sequential nitrogen starvation and extended anoxic operation to successfully establish one-stage PNA. Long-term reactor operation and cyclic nitrogen conversion performance demonstrated that repeat

Raising wastewater collection and discharge standards will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from metropolitan rivers.

Urban rivers are increasingly recognized as significant sources for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Few studies, however, quantify emissions of all three GHG from rehabilitating urban rivers that receive treated wastewater. This study analyzed carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations and diffusive fluxes from the Suzhou Creek in Shanghai that were investigated across the four seasons in 2021. Our results show that Suzhou Creek behaves as a source of atmospheric GHG emissions. The mean concentrations of CO2 CH4 and N2O, in the main and tributaries were 80.62 ±

Endothelial MICU1 alleviates diabetic cardiomyopathy by attenuating nitrative stress-mediated cardiac microvascular injury.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial microvascular injury is the key event in early diabetic heart disease. The injury of myocardial microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) is the main cause and trigger of myocardial microvascular disease. Mitochondrial calcium homeostasis plays an important role in maintaining the normal function, survival and death of endothelial cells. Considering that mitochondrial calcium uptake 1 (MICU1) is a key molecule in mitochondrial calcium regulation, this study aimed to investigate the role of MICU1 in CMECs and explore its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: To examine the role

Coupled nitrogen and phosphorus cycles mediated by coordinated variations of functional microbes in industrial recirculating aquaculture system.

Industrial Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (IRAS) represent a sustainable and efficient approach to aquaculture, offering significant benefits in water conservation and environmental management. A comprehensive understanding of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling is essential for optimizing system design and operational strategies, enabling the maintenance of a balanced ecosystem within IRAS. Here, water microbial communities in the shrimp aquaculture pond (AP) and nitrification tank (NT) of the IRAS were investigated using a metagenomics-based approach to explore the mechanisms of N and

Ammonium-assimilating microbiome: A halophilic biosystem rationally optimized by carbon to nitrogen ratios with stable nitrogen conversion and microbial structure.

The contradiction between theoretical metabolism of ammonium assimilation and experiential understanding of conventional biosystems makes the rational optimization of the ammonium-assimilating microbiome through carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios perplexing. The effect of different C/N ratios on ammonium-assimilating biosystems was investigated in saline wastewater treatment. C/N ratios significantly hindered the nutrient removal efficiency, but ammonium-assimilating biosystems maintained functional stability in nitrogen conversions and microbial communities. With sufficient biomass, higher than
