Soil water and inorganic nitrogen contents drive soil microbial carbon fixation during wetland reclamation and restoration.

Wetlands are critical terrestrial carbon sinks, playing a vital role in mitigating global warming by fixing substantial atmospheric carbon dioxide. To explore how wetland reclamation and restoration affect soil microbial carbon fixation, we sampled soils from five land-use types in western Jilin Province, China: undisturbed natural reed wetland, reclaimed rice paddy and upland field, restored agricultural drainage wetland and naturally restored wetland after farmland abandonment. We analyzed the effects of wetland reclamation and restoration on microbial communities, metabolic pathways, and ca

Effects of nitrogen deposition on soil microbial communities in temperate and subtropical forests in China.

Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition has aroused large concerns because of its potential negative effects on forest ecosystems. Although microorganisms play a vital role in ecosystem carbon (C) and nutrient cycling, the effect of N deposition on soil microbiota still remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the responses of microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN) and microbial community composition to 4-5years of experimentally simulated N deposition in temperate needle-leaf forests and subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests in eastern China, using chloroform fumigation extraction and phos

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron(III) reduction catalyzed by a lithoautotrophic nitrate-reducing iron(II) oxidizing enrichment culture.

The last two decades have seen nitrogen/iron-transforming bacteria at the forefront of new biogeochemical discoveries, such as anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction (feammox) and lithoautotrophic nitrate-reducing ferrous iron-oxidation (NRFeOx). These emerging findings continue to expand our knowledge of the nitrogen/iron cycle in nature and also highlight the need to re-understand the functional traits of the microorganisms involved. Here, as a proof-of-principle, we report compelling evidence for the capability of an NRFeOx enrichment culture to catalyze the feammox p

Urea cycle disorders-update.

The urea cycle is a metabolic pathway for the disposal of excess nitrogen, which arises primarily as ammonia. Nitrogen is essential for growth and life-maintenance, but excessive ammonia leads to life-threatening conditions. The urea cycle disorders (UCDs) comprise diseases presenting with hyperammonemia that arise in either the neonatal period (about 50% of cases) or later. Congenital defects of the enzymes or transporters of the urea cycle cause the disease. This cycle utilizes five enzymes, two of which, carbamoylphosphate synthetase 1 and ornithine transcarbamylase are present in the mitoc

Exploration of biogenic nitrogen doped carbon microspheres derived from resorcinol-formaldehyde as anode for lithium and sodium ion batteries.

The study explores biogenic nitrogen doped carbon microspheres derived from resorcinol, formaldehyde (BNCMs), for battery application. Ureolytic bacteria were used to produce biogenic ammonia in the form of ammonium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate. Copolymerization of resorcinol, formaldehyde and biogenic ammonia at 60-80 °C produces BNCMs. Elemental analysis evidences that the nitrogen-enriched carbon microspheres contain about 8% of nitrogen. The BNCMs anode exhibits appreciable reversible capacity and excellent rate performance in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SI

KOH-modified hydrochar with nitrogen-fixing bacteria alleviates aluminum toxicity and mitigates acidification-driven nitrogen loss in soybean rhizosphere.

Soil acidification severely constrains crop production by reducing nitrogen bioavailability. Although hydrochar shows promise for soil remediation, its application in acidified soils remains challenging due to its intrinsic acidity. Here, we developed an innovative strategy combining KOH-modified hydrochar (KOHC) with nitrogen-fixing microbial aggregates (MGs) and investigated its effects on rhizosphere acidification and nitrogen cycling in soybean. Pot experiments and multi-omics analyses revealed that 2% KOHC-MGs treatment significantly promoted the aggregation of rhizosphere nitrogen-fixing

Integrated Metabolome and Transcriptome Analyses Reveal Etiolation-Induced Metabolic Changes Leading to High Amino Acid Contents in a Light-Sensitive Japanese Albino Tea Cultivar.

Plant albinism causes the etiolation of leaves because of factors such as deficiency of chloroplasts or chlorophylls. In general, albino tea leaves accumulate higher free amino acid (FAA) contents than do conventional green tea leaves. To explore the metabolic changes of etiolated leaves (EL) in the light-sensitive Japanese albino tea cultivar "Koganemidori," we performed integrated metabolome and transcriptome analyses by comparing EL with green leaves induced by bud-sport mutation (BM) or shading treatments (S-EL). Comparative omics analyses indicated that etiolation-induced molecular respon

Earthworm-associated microbial community reassembly accompanies higher inorganic-N concentrations in spent mushroom substrate.

INTRODUCTION: Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a major residual stream from edible mushroom production and a potential feedstock for organic fertilizer. Although earthworm composting can alter SMS transformation, the microbial processes associated with nitrogen transformation remain poorly resolved. METHODS: Seven mixtures of black fungus SMS (AhSMS) and golden needle mushroom SMS (FfSMS) were subjected to conventional composting or Eisenia fetida-mediated composting and sampled after 0, 30, and 60 d. RESULTS: Earthworm composting was associated with higher bacterial alpha-diversity values

[Effect of combined exposure (noise, dust, nitrogen oxides) on health status of metal workers in heavy industry. Evaluation of erythrocyte metabolism].

This paper presents the effects of combined exposure (noise, dust, nitrogen oxides) on the health condition of industrial workers, with special regard to red blood cell metabolism. 208 male industrial plant workers of the average age of 38.5 +/- 8.27 years and the average work period of 14.7 +/- 8.22 years were examined. The statistically significant increase of methemoglobin level was detected as well as some changes in erythrocyte metabolism in terms of increased activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase and in vitro production of lactic acid in erythrocytes. The observe

4-Chloro-2-fluoro-5-nitrobenzoic acid as a possible building block for solid-phase synthesis of various heterocyclic scaffolds.

4-Chloro-2-fluoro-5-nitrobenzoic acid is a commercially available multireactive building block that can serve as a starting material in heterocyclic oriented synthesis (HOS) leading to various condensed nitrogenous cycles. This work describes its ability for the preparation of substituted nitrogenous heterocycles having 5-7-membered cycles via polymer-supported o-phenylendiamines. Immobilization of this compound on Rink resin followed by further chlorine substitution, reduction of a nitro group and appropriate cyclization afforded benzimidazoles, benzotriazoles, quinoxalinones, benzodiazepined

Treatment of episodic hyperammonemia in children with inborn errors of urea synthesis.

Although normal plasma ammonium levels can be maintained in children with inborn errors of ureagenesis, these children are vulnerable to episodic hyperammonemia often resulting in coma and death. To treat such episodes, we designed a therapeutic protocol that included prompt recognition of hyperammonemia, therapy with intravenous sodium benzoate, sodium phenylacetate, and arginine, and nitrogen-free intravenous alimentation. Dialysis was performed if the hyperammonemia was unresponsive to drug therapy. Twelve episodes of hyperammonemia in seven children deficient in carbamyl phosphate syntheta

Tropical forest carbon sequestration accelerated by nitrogen.

Understanding forest carbon sequestration is crucial for predicting and managing the carbon cycle, yet we lack evidence for whether, when and how the carbon sink in tropical forests recovering from land use change is nutrient limited. Here we show how the tropical forest recovery rate responds to experimental nutrient manipulation over a secondary succession gradient in a naturally recovering Central American landscape. Nutrient limitation of aboveground biomass accumulation shifts from strong nitrogen limitation in young forests to no evidence of nitrogen or phosphorus limitation in older sec

Amino Acid Supplementation as a Biostimulant in Medical Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) Plant Nutrition.

There is growing evidence to support the involvement of nutrients and biostimulants in plant secondary metabolism. Therefore, this study evaluated the potential of amino acid-based supplements that can influence different hydroponic nutrient cycles (systems) to enhance the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of medical cannabis plants. The results demonstrate that amino acid biostimulation significantly affected ion levels in different plant tissues (the "ionome"), increasing nitrogen and sulfur content but reducing calcium and iron content in both nutrient cycles. A significantly higher accumula

How Plants May Maintain Protein Homeostasis Under Rising Atmospheric CO2.

Vascular plants may employ several physiological mechanisms to stabilize their protein contents as atmospheric CO2 concentrations change over a day, year, decade, or century. One mechanism is that plants may rely more on soil ammonium as their nitrogen source when CO2 increases. Another is that plants may convert more nitrate into amino acids in their roots. A third is that plants may increase the ratio of manganese over magnesium in their chloroplasts and accelerate a previously unrecognized biochemical cycle that generates organic acids such as malate instead of carbohydrates. This proposed

The nature of nitrogen: an overview.

Most of the nitrogen available to the biosphere exists as N2 in the atmosphere, and is not useful to most organisms until it is "fixed" either biologically or abiotically (by lightning or aurorae, or industrially). Once it is fixed into NH3, usually it is either assimilated and transformed into organic N or nitrified into NO3-. Organic N can be transformed back into NH3 by ammonification. Nitrate can be converted into N2O by nitrification and denitrification, and to N2 by denitrification. Such N2O and N2 production results in nitrogen loss from ecosystems and a nitrogen gain to the atmospheric

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of Sargassum hemiphyllum var. chinense to ocean acidification and nitrogen enrichment.

Sargassum hemiphyllum var. chinense is a major brown macroalga and has important ecological and economic significance. Ocean acidification and nitrogen enrichment are serious threats to marine ecosystems primarily by altering the physiology of organisms. However, the response of S. hemiphyllum var. chinense to the combined effects of ocean acidification and elevated nitrogen levels remains unclear. This study conducted a 7-day dual-factor experiment to investigate the physiological and transcriptional responses of S. hemiphyllum var. chinense under two CO2 levels (400 μatm and 1000 μatm) and t

The biochar/Fe-modified biocarrier driven simultaneous NDFO and Feammox to remove nitrogen from eutrophic water.

Novelty techniques of Fe(III) reduction coupled to anaerobic ammonium oxidation (i.e. Feammox) and nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation (i.e. NDFO) provide new insights into autotrophic nitrogen removal from eutrophic waters. Given that Feammox and NDFO can theoretically complete the simultaneous NH+ 4-N and NO- 3-N removal via Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, this study introduces iron powder to the surface of the biocarrier as a solid-phase source of Fe, and biochar was used as an electron shuttle to mix with the iron powder to improve the bioavailability of iron. Batch experiments was carried out for 70

Atmospheric reactive nitrogen in China: sources, recent trends, and damage costs.

Human activities have intensely altered the global nitrogen cycle and produced nitrogenous gases of environmental significance, especially in China where the most serious atmospheric nitrogen pollution worldwide exists. We present a comprehensive assessment of ammonia (NH(3)), nitrogen oxides (NO(x)), and nitrous oxide (N(2)O) emissions in China based on a full cycle analysis. Total reactive nitrogen (Nr) emission more than doubled over the past three decades, during which the trend of increase slowed for NH(3) emissions after 2000, while the trend of increase continued to accelerate for NO(x)

A Nitrogen budget for Norway analysis of Nitrogen flows from societal and natural sources (1961-2020).

Nitrogen is a chemical element that is cycled through Earth's lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and atmosphere, as well as a crucial component of the molecular machinery of life. Being an intrinsic part of the biosphere, the flow of nitrogen in a country can provide unique insights into the sustainability of a society. This study investigates how nitrogen is used in Norway between 1961 and 2020. Nitrogen inputs from atmospheric deposition, biological nitrogen fixation and from weathering, as well as from synthetic fertilizers are addressed. These sources of nitrogen are used by plants that

Chlorine Radical Cycling Amplifies Photolytic NOx Release.

The atmospheric chlorine radical (Cl•) is a highly reactive oxidant. However, its formation on particulate matter (PM) surfaces and its role in nitrogen chemistry remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the Cl• chemistry on photoactive PM and evaluated its potential influence on atmospheric nitrogen cycling. Experimental evidence confirms that the chloride ion (Cl-) on the photoactive surface undergoes oxidation by photogenerated hole (h+) to form Cl•, which subsequently accelerates nitrite intermediate conversion to gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx). Under the model experimental
