Diabetic foot ulcer care integrating Salmon White's model: the critical role of community nurses.

Patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) often face significant challenges in receiving optimal care in the community. This condition can lead to serious complications if not addressed, including infection, delayed healing, amputation, decreased quality of life, financial burdens and mobility impairments. Community nurses are uniquely positioned to support DFU management, as they serve as the first point of contact for individuals managing this condition. They offer essential education on foot care and emphasise the importance of early intervention. In this context, using Salmon White's model

A study of current nursing management of long-term suprapubic catheters.

Problems associated with long-term catheters can place increased demands on nurses' time and resources. This article reports a study which investigated the nursing management of 113 patients with long-term suprapubic catheters. The study identified that 52% of catheters were changed routinely, 30% of catheters were changed only when they became blocked and 30% of nurses experienced problems when changing catheters. A total of 42% of patients received either a bladder 'washout' or instillation and 60% required a dressing around their suprapubic site. This study also examined the reasons for app

Disasters in Disrupted Communities: The Role of Nurses in Promoting Disaster Readiness.

As natural hazards increase and intensify, nurses can support patient, family, and community well-being by promoting disaster readiness. Brief, tailored, and timely patient education during minor and routine visits is one avenue to do so. A more prepared community can decrease illness and injury, lessen health care system burden, and increase resilience to disasters. This article provides accessible disaster readiness messages that nurses can model and utilize in health care interactions. The all-hazards approach and common hazards preparedness are addressed. Several case studies are presented

Using a site visit to a contaminated location as a focus for environmental health education for academic and public health nurses.

We describe a conference initiative that is distinguished by the use of a "community case study" to increase the knowledge and skills of nursing faculty and public health nurses in environmental health and to provide networking support to facilitate infusion of environmental health into nursing curricula and public health nursing practice. The Institute of Medicine's (1995) general environmental health competencies for nurses provided the conference framework. Woburn, Massachusetts, a Superfund site, served as the community case study to illustrate a complex environmental health problem. Over

Public health nurses' experiences working with children who are next of kin: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There are a substantial number of children who are the next of kin of parents suffering from illness or substance abuse. These children can experience emotional and behavioral problems and may need support from professionals. In Norway, the specialist health service in hospitals is required to have a designated practitioner in each department to ensure support for and follow up of children who are next of kin; however, this is not regulated by law in the health care in the municipalities. The aim of this study was to explore public health nurse's experiences working with children w

Risk of sarcopenia among older adults and associated factors in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia-associated lifestyle factors are not fully recognised. Community nurses could identify such factors and promote intervention strategies, mitigating the risk of sarcopenia. AIMS: To investigate the health indicators and lifestyle factors that have an impact on increased sarcopenia risk among older adults in the community. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with data collected using a structured questionnaire. The SARC-F questionnaire was used for the risk assessment of sarcopenia. The development and implementation of a community engagement strategy to improve maternal health in southern Mozambique.

Delays to seek medical help can contribute to maternal deaths particularly in community settings at home or on the road to a health facility. Community engagement (CE) can improve care-seeking behaviours and complements community-based interventions strengthening maternal health. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process undertaken to develop and implement a large-scale community engagement strategy in rural southern Mozambique. The CE strategy was developed within the context of the "Community-Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia" (NCT01911494) conducted between 2015-2017 in south

The Experiences of the Nursing Professional Development Practitioner on the Night Shift-A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The nursing shortage continues to grow and is expected to intensify in the near future. Health care organizations need to implement strategic ways to support nurses. First-year new graduate nurses have a high turnover rate. It is critical to have educational support on the night shift, where most new nurses begin their careers. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to gain insight into how nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners or nursing educators who work the night shift perceive their roles and explore their experiences. Limited literature exists on having NPD on the night s

An exploration of district nurses' perception of occupational stress.

Many studies in nurse occupational stress have been carried out on high-dependency areas in general nursing, while community nursing has been neglected. District nurses, however, appear to be under increasing pressure, especially in the light of recent NHS reforms. This study aimed to explore district nurses' experiences in relation to the range and severity of stressful work-related events encountered in district nursing practice. The study was undertaken in a Yorkshire community healthcare NHS trust, with a convenience sample of 50 qualified district nurses, of which 38 successfully complete
