Nurses self-performing and teaching others breast self-examination: implications for advanced practice nurses.

Although there is evidence to suggest that breast self-examination (BSE) aids in the early detection of breast cancer, the underuse of this prevention behavior continues to exist. The purpose of this study was to explore the personal behaviors and professional practices of nurses in the use of BSE and to discuss implications for the advanced practice nurse (APN). The sample (N = 300) consisted of nurses and student nurses. While almost all nurses had performed BSE at least once, fewer than half did this monthly. The majority believed it was the nurse's role to teach BSE, but almost three fourt

Empowering final-year student nurses through autonomous practice in district and community nursing placements.

Final-year student nurses were offered aspirant nurse roles to support busy clinical teams within district nursing services as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Student nurses in their final year of training had the opportunity to work as an aspirant nurse (paid band 4 position) for a 12-week period, as per the emergency education standards delivered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in an effort to help out during the pandemic. This gave the students additional responsibilities to allow them to work autonomously but still under the supervision of the registered nurse. This rol

Academic partnerships with clinical nurse scientist mentors improve the Doctor of Nursing Practice student experience.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree has become firmly established as the terminal practice degree for advanced practice registered nurses in the United States. A defining component of the DNP curriculum requires students to implement a scholarly project that addresses a clinical problem and improves patient or system outcomes. This article describes the development and implementation of a structured clinical-academic partnership between a university-based DNP nurse anesthesia program and a pediatric health care organization in the southeastern United States. Central to this collaborati

Capturing the value of nursing practice: Why standardized nursing language is a strategic, economic, and policy imperative.

BACKGROUND: The currency of nursing care (how care is counted, measured, and valued within systems of power and decision-making) must be understood and treated as both a societal good and an economic investment. The currency of nursing care is grounded in directly impacting patient outcomes, population health, and system sustainability. However, the economic and social value of nursing care remains invisible and undervalued in how health systems measure performance and allocate resources. PURPOSE: To position the urgency to capture the value of nursing care in a standard, networked approach a

Reflections of Master of Nursing Specialist Students in an Advanced Practice Nursing Course: A Qualitative Research Study.

AIM: To explore the learning experiences of Chinese Master of Nursing Specialist (MNS) students as expressed in reflection reports produced in response to an Advanced Practice Nursing course; to clarify their understanding of the roles played by, the core competencies of, and the career development prospects of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs). BACKGROUND: Health systems both in China and worldwide are increasingly facing pressure from ageing populations and the growing burden of chronic diseases. Given the shortage of skilled nurses, APNs are critical for optimizing care. High-quality educati

Nurses' Short Peripheral Catheter Flushing Practices: Implications for Patient Care, Nursing Education, and Policy.

Nursing practice and institutional policies regarding short peripheral catheter (SPC) flushing vary. These variations result in a lack of understanding about the factors that influence nurses' SPC flushing practices and leave their effect on outcomes unexplored-information that could potentially enhance nurses' clinical education, institutional policy efforts, and patient care. Using a mixed-methods design, this study examined SPC flushing practices and outcomes among a cohort of medical-surgical nurses and explored their rationale for flushing. Trends were noted in the timing of flushes, and

Lyme Disease Knowledge, Practices, and Vaccine Acceptability Among Nurse Practitioners in Pediatric Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease (LD) is a major public health problem in the United States. Given its incidence and geographic expansion, nurse practitioners (NPs) will likely encounter patients with this condition. METHOD: NPs were invited to participate in an electronic survey via email, newsletter, and social media posts. The 31-question survey collected information on provider characteristics, clinical scenario decisions, resources used, and vaccine sentiment for LD. RESULTS: Survey participants (n = 606) were primarily cisgender female (75%) and aged 30-49 years (62%). Responding to six hypo

Attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs related to full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses.

BACKGROUND: Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) play a critical role in addressing health care access, yet regulatory barriers in states without full practice authority (FPA) limit their capacity to provide care. Tennessee remains a restricted-practice state, and limited data exist on Tennessee APRNs' attitudes and perceptions regarding FPA. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to examine the attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs of APRNs in Tennessee related to FPA and to identify factors influencing their perspectives. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, we

This study investigated factors associated with gerontological nursing practice among nurses in CNCSUs. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. The participants included 153 nurses at two general hospitals in Korea. A structured self-reported questionnaire was administered to assess general characteristics, perceived patient safety

Implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Pathways in Gynecologic Oncology: Multidisciplinary Coordination, Nursing Roles, and Practical Challenges.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways are evidence-based, multimodal approaches to perioperative care designed to reduce surgical stress, standardize clinical practice, and promote earlier functional recovery. In gynecologic oncology, their clinical benefits are well established; however, successful implementation remains challenging because of surgical complexity, variation in institutional resources, inconsistent adherence to protocol elements, and the need for coordinated multidisciplinary care. This narrative review examines the practical implementation of ERAS pathways in gyneco

The Application of Nurse-Led Bedside Critical Care Ultrasound in Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing Practice: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly used in paediatric and neonatal critical care, but evidence on nurse-led bedside POCUS remains limited and fragmented. AIMS: This scoping review aimed to map the evidence on nurse-led bedside POCUS in paediatric and neonatal critical care nursing practice, examine implementation factors and identify evidence gaps relevant to nursing research, education and clinical practice. METHODS: Following JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidance, we searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and CNKI from inception to Oct

Effect of focused nursing training on infection control measures on nurses' practice for patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

BACKGROUND: Nursing care for patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) is a crucial step in reducing complications and promoting recovery. Infection control procedures are vital tools for preventing most complications. Proper nursing education and training for managing these patients can provide sufficient protection against urinary tract infections and related issues, such as secondary hemorrhage and hospital readmission. AIM: To evaluate nurses' performance after receiving nursing instructions regarding the infection control measures for patients with PNL. METHODS: A quasi-exp

Delirium in German Nursing Homes - a qualitative study of care practice from the perspective of nurses and general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a multifactorial and potentially life-threatening syndrome that remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in nursing homes, despite residents' high vulnerability due to advanced age, multimorbidity and cognitive impairment. To date, little is known how healthcare professionals perceive and manage delirium in these settings, particularly regarding prevention, diagnosis, therapy and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as differentiation from other neurodegenerative diseases. This study explores the perspectives of nurses and general practitioners (GPs) on the quality o
