Analyzing text message linguistic features: Do people with depression communicate differently with their close and non-close contacts?

BACKGROUND: Relatively little is known about how communication changes as a function of depression severity and interpersonal closeness. We examined the linguistic features of outgoing text messages among individuals with depression and their close- and non-close contacts. METHODS: 419 participants were included in this 16-week-long observational study. Participants regularly completed the PHQ-8 and rated subjective closeness to their contacts. Text messages were processed to count frequencies of word usage in the LIWC 2015 libraries. A linear mixed modeling approach was used to estimate ling

Hair and Occupational Success among Chief Executive Officers in Business.

This study assessed relationship between hair loss and professional success by characterizing severity of hair loss among current white male chief executive officers (CEOs) in the United States. This observational study of androgenic alopecia among business executives was conducted by grading anterior and lateral view photographs of CEOs aged 50-69 years. Blinded, independent two-reviewer assessments of androgenic alopecia were performed based on the Hamilton-Norwood Hair Loss Scale. In all, 68 CEOs were included in this review, with 34 individuals each in the age groups of 50-59 and 60-69 yea

Fracture risk in hypoparathyroidism: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: In this meta-analysis, we analyzed 7 observational studies for assessing the fracture risk in patients with hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT). We found that the risk of vertebral fractures is increased by almost 2-fold, especially those with nonsurgical hypoPT. PURPOSE: Patients with hypoPT have higher bone mineral density than age- and sex-matched controls. This would theoretically translate into a lower risk of fractures, although available clinical evidence is contradictory. Hence, the present systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to collate and provide a precise summary

Fruit and vegetable consumption and the risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

The association of the consumption of fruit and vegetables (FV) and the risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) has been a controversial subject. Thus, we carried out a meta-analysis to evaluate the association of FV consumption and the risk of PMOP. PubMed, Web of Science and Wan Fang were searched for relevant articles published up to March 2018. To evaluate the association of FV intake and PMOP risk, combined odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with the fixed or random effects model. Eighteen studies involving 12 643 participants were included in this meta-

Polymyalgia rheumatica and risk of cerebrovascular accident: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several chronic inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, have been linked to an increased risk of cerebrovascular accident (CVA), but the data on polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies that reported odds ratio, relative risk, hazard ratio, or standardized incidence ratio comparing the risk of CVA in patients with PMR versus non-PMR controls. Pooled risk ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effect, g

Types of genotypes in progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis and liver transplantation: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) refers to a group of inherited cholestatic liver diseases that affect children, often leading to liver failure and requiring liver transplantation (LT). Many studies have established correlations between the effect of the causal gene variant types and the severity of the PFIC phenotype, the treatment considered, or its outcomes in patients. Nevertheless, no selection criteria for LT based on genotypes have been adopted for patients affected by this group of diseases. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the asso

Diabetic retinopathy and dementia risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is associated with elevated dementia risk. However, no previous studies have quantified the strength or impact of this association. To address this, our study explored the relationship between DR and dementia. We searched Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed for observational studies between January 1, 2000, and May 1, 2024, examining data showing an association between DR and dementia. No filters were used in these searches. Eligibility restrictions, including limitations in observational study designs and publications in English, were applied as pre-specified post-sea

The association between endometriosis and migraine: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis affects women of reproductive age. Increasing attention is being given to the characterization of comorbidities in endometriosis to enhance clinical phenotyping. Among these comorbidities, migraine has been reported to be significantly more common in individuals with endometriosis compared to the general population. However, the true epidemiological burden remains uncertain, and no conclusive evidence links specific subtypes of endometriosis to migraine. MAIN BODY: Seven electronic databases were searched from inception until July 22nd, 2024, using combinations of re
