Somatostatin and its long-acting analogue octreotide have been used in various diarrheal disorders, including neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Preoperative control of hyperthyroidism in patients with TSH-secreting pituitary adenomas (TSHoma) may avoid perioperative thyroid storm. There are limited numbers of reports concerning the management of pregnancy complicated by carcinoid tumors. Octreotide, the synthetic analogue of somatostatin, has been found to be beneficial in preventing the perioperative exacerbation of carcinoid syndrome. We present a case of the successful use of neuraxial analgesia/anesthesia for labor and vaginal delivery in a symptomatic parturient afflicted with carcinoid syndrome, who received an intravenous infusion of octreotide throughout labor and vaginal delivery.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the long-term results of octreotide therapy in dumping syndrome. We report the results of an open study including 20 patients with severe dumping symptoms after gastric surgery treated with octreotide between 1987 and 1997 at the Leiden University Medical Centre.

OBJECTIVE: To test the clinical use of octreotide in the treatment of sulfonylurea-induced hypoglycemia.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A case is reported of sulfonylurea-induced hypoglycemic coma in a nondiabetic subject, which was complicated by relapse of hypoglycemia after resuscitation with intravenous dextrose. Subcutaneous octreotide, 50 micrograms 12 hourly, suppressed stimulated endogenous insulin secretion, thereby preventing a further recurrence of hypoglycemia.

Octreotide and bromocriptine were used to treat an acromegalic patient harbouring an invasive pituitary tumour secreting growth hormone and prolactin. Octreotide (100 micrograms, subcutaneously, three times daily) and bromocriptine (15 mg orally, daily) rapidly improved clinical signs and symptoms, including diabetes that initially required insulin. INTRODUCTION: Oxalate nephropathy has various etiologies and remains a rare cause of renal failure. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of oxalate nephropathy following octreotide therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 78-year-old Caucasian man taking chronic octreotide treatment for acromegaly who presented with acute oxalate nephropathy after antibiotic therapy. The diagnosis was confirmed by urinary analysis and a kidney biopsy. The recovery of renal function was favorable after hydration and withdrawal of octreotide therapy.
