Tooth number abnormality: from bench to bedside.

Tooth number abnormality is one of the most common dental developmental diseases, which includes both tooth agenesis and supernumerary teeth. Tooth development is regulated by numerous developmental signals, such as the well-known Wnt, BMP, FGF, Shh and Eda pathways, which mediate the ongoing complex interactions between epithelium and mesenchyme. Abnormal expression of these crutial signalling during this process may eventually lead to the development of anomalies in tooth number; however, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this review, we summarized the major process of tooth devel

Oral sequelae and rehabilitation considerations for survivors of childhood cancer.

Advances in the treatment of childhood cancer including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery have resulted in increased numbers of survivors. Due to the side effects of oncology treatment, childhood cancer survivors are at risk of long-term medical problems. Children who have received chemotherapy or head and neck radiotherapy are at a higher risk of abnormal dental development, which can result in long-term complications regarding dental treatment and oral rehabilitation. Associated dental abnormalities include tooth agenesis, atypical tooth development and delayed eruption. This article de

Dental development in Homo naledi.

Humans' prolonged somatic development and life history are unique among primates, yet their evolutionary origins remain unclear. Dental development has been used as a proxy to reconstruct life history evolution in the hominin clade and indicates a recent emergence of the human developmental pattern. Here, we analyse tooth formation and eruption in two developing dentitions of Homo naledi, a late-surviving, morphologically mosaic hominin species. Deciduous dental development is more similar to humans than to chimpanzees, probably reflecting hominin symplesiomorphy rather than bearing life histo

Morphology and development of teeth and epidermal brushes in loricariid catfishes.

Loricariidae or suckermouth armored catfishes are one of several aquatic taxa feeding on epilithic and epiphytic algae. Their upper and lower jaws bear exquisitely curved teeth, which usually are asymmetrically bicuspid. The enlarged lower lip carries papillae with keratinous unicellular epidermal brushes or unculi. Teeth, and probably unculi too, assist in scraping food off substrates. Their morphology, growth, and replacement is examined and compared among several loricariid species, using cleared and stained specimens, serial sections, and SEM. Apart from the general tooth form and crown sh

Unique dentition of lungfish.

Lungfish are a group of ancient fish, represented almost continuously in the fossil record from their first appearance in the Devonian to the present time. They have numerous unique characters in the dentition, found only among lungfish, as well as some that are shared with other groups of fish and with higher vertebrates, such as a thin layer of true enamel, instead of the enameloid found in the dentition of most fish. Unique characters include the diversity of forms of dentine in the tooth plates, as well as the organisation of the dentines and the unusual mode of continuous growth of the de

Epidermal growth factor-induced precocious incisor eruption is associated with decreased tooth size.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) causes precocious eruption of incisors in vivo and is mitogenic for tooth-derived cells in vitro. These two observations lead to the hypothesis that the EGF-induced precocious eruption is the result of an increase in the size of the incisor. To test this hypothesis, neonatal mice were injected daily with various doses of EGF and, seven days after birth, were perfused with fixative. EGF causes a retardation of overall growth (as measured by body weight) and a dose-dependent thickening of the epidermis. The incisors were examined in midsagittal histological sections

Homologies of the toothcomb.

A recently described juvenile specimen of Avahi was supposed to show that indriines have an unreplaced deciduous canine and that the indriine toothcomb was composed only of incisors. To the contrary, this specimen demonstrates quite dramatically a growth phenomenon earlier discussed: in indriines, the anteriormost of the four deciduous lower teeth posterior to the toothcomb migrates mesially toward the toothcomb (Schwartz, '74). In this particular Avahi, this tooth has even become associated with the toothcomb. The alignment of this tooth with the toothcomb is a strictly impermanent situation

[Permanent molar crypts in the human mandible].

A few decades ago, relatively little was known concerning the pre-eruptive spatial development of permanent molars. The material that formed the basis for this study consisted of 114 dry human mandibles of young children and adolescents. Measurements were made on radiographs of the bony crypts in which the tooth germs had existed ante mortem and the pattern of spatial development was studied macroscopically and histologically. The findings revealed a consistent developmental pattern, in which the means of expansion of the crypts of the second and third molars, prior to crown-calcification, dis

[Genetic analysis of tooth development and eruption in 82 pairs of female-female twins].

OBJECTIVE: To study the heritability of tooth development and eruption. METHODS: 82 pairs of female-female twins between 6-12 years old were collected. Twin zygosity diagnosis were made by DNA-fingerprinting. The number of third molar present, hypodontia, upper lateral incisor malformation and the number of erupted permanent teeth were recorded by oral examination and panoramic radiographs, their heritabilities were calculated. RESULTS: According to the level of heritability, the dental traits were aligned as follows: the number of third molars present, the upper lateral incisor malformation

Cellular and molecular strategies for studying the regulation of bone resorption using the toothless (osteopetrotic) mutation in the rat.

The division of labor among cells of the skeleton is distinct and diverse and the regulation of these cells is interdependent. Osteoclasts are the cellular source of bone resorption and signals for their development and activation come, at least in part, from bone and other cells in the local environment. Studies of isolated cells have identified some factors in the developmental cascade of osteoclasts but there is little understanding of the sequence and local concentrations, not to mention other factors, needed for both the development of competent osteoclasts and for coordinated bone resorp

The dentist and the dentition.

The role of the dentist on interdisciplinary teams has expanded from therapeutics to comprehensive diagnosis, relying heavily on expertise in anatomy, pathology, and genetics. Along with this expansion has come a need for other health professionals to understand the diagnostic side of dentistry. Since alteration of tooth structure and eruption patterns are a significant component of many birth defects, it behooves those interested in such problems to become acquainted with the material in the remainder of this volume.
