Two-color fluorescence scanning laser ophthalmoscopy for in vivo mouse retinal ganglion cell imaging at the single-cell level.

Fluorescence scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) provides high-resolution en face imaging of the retina to investigate retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in both small animals and humans. Multicolor fluorescence SLO can further extend the anatomical and functional imaging capabilities; however, its in vivo implementation remains challenging due to optical aberrations, limited labeling strategies, and the need for multichannel calibration. In this study, we present a compact two-color fluorescence SLO system designed with registered field-of-views (FOVs) between the two color channels for in vivo im

Subregion-based maximum similarity search registration method for transverse chromatic aberration correction in ultra-widefield scanning laser ophthalmoscopy images.

SIGNIFICANCE: Ultra-widefield scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (UWF SLO), a confocal scanning-based ophthalmic imaging modality widely used in clinical and research ophthalmology, offers an ultra-wide field of view, high resolution, and real-time dynamic imaging. However, multiwavelength imaging-induced transverse chromatic aberration (TCA) is markedly exacerbated in the peripheral retina, causing ghosting artifacts of retinal vessels and other critical anatomical structures. This severely limits image quality and the reliability of downstream quantitative analysis. AIM: We aim to correct TCA in

Compact lens-based dual-channel adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy for in-vivo three-dimensional retinal imaging in mice.

Adaptive optics (AO) has been instrumental in ophthalmic imaging, by correcting wavefront aberrations in ocular optics and achieving diffraction-limited resolution. Current state-of-the-art AO retinal imaging systems use mirror-based optics to avoid surface reflection and chromatic aberrations, requiring a large system footprint with long focal length spherical mirrors. Here we report a compact refractive lens-based AO scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) system with simultaneous dual-channel fluorescence imaging capacity in mouse retina. The optical layout fits on a 2'x2' optical breadboard an

Comparison of B-Scan ultrasonography, ultra-widefield fundus imaging, and indirect ophthalmoscopy in detecting retinal breaks in cataractous eyes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of B-scan kinetic ultrasonography (USG), standard ultra-widefield (UWF) imaging, and indirect ophthalmoscopy (IDO) in retinal break detection in cataractous eyes. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We consecutively enrolled 126 cataract patients (including 246 eyes) with no comorbidities that could decrease best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Three index tests (USG, nonmydriatic UWF, and mydriatic IDO) were performed preoperatively to screen for retinal breaks. One week after cataract extraction, a dilated IDO examination was repeated for the defi

Separate lifetime signatures of macaque S cones, M/L cones, and rods observed with adaptive optics fluorescence lifetime ophthalmoscopy.

In the retina, several molecules involved in metabolism, the visual cycle, and other roles exhibit intrinsic fluorescence. The overall properties of retinal fluorescence depend on changes to the composition of these molecules and their environmental interactions due to transient functional shifts, especially in disease. This behooves the understanding of the origins and deviations of these properties within the multilayered retina at high lateral and axial resolution. Of particular interest is the fluorescence lifetime, a potential biomarker of function and disease independent of fluorescence

Retinal Features in Cynomolgus Macaques (Macaca fascicularis) Assessed by Using Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy and Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography.

Cynomolgus macaques are an important and commonly used species in preclinical toxicology studies, but structural reports of in vivo retinal findings are rare in this species. The purpose of this study was to diminish this gap and document optical coherence tomography and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging data in the healthy posterior pole of cynomolgus monkeys' eyes at predose examinations. The current study is a retrospective assessment of baseline spectral domain OCT data obtained from the 768 eyes of 384 cynomolgus monkeys (192 males and 192 females) of Mauritian origin. The data set wa

[Results of the ocular hypertension treatment study and the confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy ancillary study and evaluation of the heidelberg retina tomograph].

The Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) has shown that analyzing changes of the optic disc configuration is superior to evaluating visual field findings for the early detection of primary open angle glaucoma. The Confocal Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy Ancillary Study (CSLO) is the first study to reveal that certain topographic baseline measurements of the optic disc are significantly associated with the development of primary open angle glaucoma in patients with ocular hypertension. An abnormally increased "mean height contour" value proved to be the individual parameter connected with

Computer-assisted quantification of pre-plus and plus disease in images obtained using Pictor versus video indirect ophthalmoscopy: a pilot study.

Subjectivity in the diagnosis of plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity has prompted the creation of computer programs to objectively measure vascular characteristics. ROPtool is a semiautomated computer program that analyzes retinal vascular dilation and tortuosity. To explore its ability to trace images taken with a FDA-approved, portable, handheld noncontact digital fundus camera (Pictor), we compared ROPtool analysis of Pictor still images acquired by nonophthalmologists to video indirect ophthalmoscopy (VIO) still images acquired by ophthalmologists. ROPtool could trace more Pictor ve
